Near Future locomotive sources

For general discussion of near future locomotive sources 10-50 years from now. Will we have fusion powered X-Wings and BattleMechs? Or will we stick with the good old reliable "evil internal combustion engine"?

Personally I think hydrogen cells will be big for automobiles, but it will only at best compliment fossil fuel engines. Nothing just can' beat the efficeincy (as poor as it is) of the internal combustion engine, for now at least. Not to mention jet engines.
