What would you like to see?

If you could design your own SF setting, what would you like to see?
Reality comes in two forms. The one we see when our eyes are shut and the lights are on, and the one we see when our eyes are open and the lights are out.

A caveat

Post by Emote Control »

Just a minor caveat. If you post to this discussion, don't say what you *don't* want to see. Say what you do want.

My own ideas include

Psychohistory
Living Technology
Interstellar Internet with AI gods
Reality comes in two forms. The one we see when our eyes are shut and the lights are on, and the one we see when our eyes are open and the lights are out.

Submarine-style tactics (try not to be detected, and if you are, unload your torpedoes on them)
Armour instead of shields
realistic small-arms weaponry
It is not well for one to trifle in the affairs of the ancient Chinese generals, for they have a tendency to send armies of tens of thousands of warriors after those who challenge them.

Id like to see a story similar to Kafer Dawn in the roleplaying game 2300AD.
Of course that's not really an idea all my own. :P I would like to see ground combat, something we dont see much of in Sci-Fi.

Ground combat in sci-fi has the problem that it's mostly repeats of Vietnam (just like space combat is largely a duplicate of World War II or wooden-ship combat). But if you want ground combat:

Ground combat is common, because orbital weapons are too dispersed by atmosphere to make truly accurate targetting possible. Most of them take place in thick melees, with neither side daring to withdraw because once they're far enough away from their enemies the orbital forces will vaporize them.
Reality comes in two forms. The one we see when our eyes are shut and the lights are on, and the one we see when our eyes are open and the lights are out.
