Divinity original sin 2 - mods, mods and more mods

Post by mr friendly guy »

So I played the first Divinity original sin and a few other games from Larian and I am loving it. The turn base mode harks back to old school RPGs which I enjoyed as a kid in the 1990s. I wanted to buy the sequel, but I never got around to it, things to do etc.

So now with social isolation due to the coronavirus, I finally purchased this game off steam during when it was discounted and trying to play it but this time I chucked in a few mods. The really improve open up a whole bunch of possibilities for game play. Now I normally will make my toon more powerful than usual, but I am going with the rule of theme or rule of cool rather than rule of game balance here. :D

My first time is just a trial run, testing out different skills with the toon, so naturally they have high scores in all skills to test them out. To make my toon not too powerful in HtH, I have to disarm her because I played around with cheat engine and made her strength ridiculously high and forgot to change it back down. Unarmed she actually does high damage, but less than someone with weapons who has less than the maximum strength of 40. However the high strength is real useful for knocking down doors in one blow when armed, instead of grinding away reducing those hit points to zero. :D

One thing I enjoy is to see how these mods interact with each other. Besides the usual, allow a character to have multiple spells /abilities from different mods, I found an interesting use of mods from Feenix battle pack mod. One of his classes allows you to cast something IIRC called tenser's avatar (DnD inspired name)which buffs you up to around 2 times the basic stats, and another skill from a different class allows you to create a sort of clone of yourself with 2/3 hit points. Well first use Tenser's avatar to buff yourself up, and then cast the cloning spell and you create a clonewith roughly 2 times your hit points / vitality and then cast the clone spell on yourself before Tenser's avatar fades and you have a super powered clone with full hit points. Now couple that with mods which allow summonings to not fade or go beyond the usual default number, and you can spam an army of clones. When I play through this the second time round, I plan to have a fighter with this ability.

Who else uses mods for DOS 2 and which ones?

The only real QoL mods you need are "Bedrolls refresh Source," "Early Mirror," and "Enemy Lore reduction." Every area I can think of has a Source pool to use, so it's just a waste of time to backtrack. Also, the NPCs have stupidly high lore, even if not reflected in their sheets. They will constantly use First Aid on any Undead characters you have, even if they are disguised. However, this is also abusable because if there is a character they have an advantage against, they will run through Hell and high water to kill them. Ex: If you have Glass Cannon, the enemies will charge through multiple attacks of opportunity just to try and knock you down.

I love Div 2OS. We ran through on... whatever the hardest difficulty in, just not bothering with the last boss fight since it's all about RNGG and super-cheese. In fact, the game is all about cheese builds (That and Lizard people fingerbanging narration) and abusing wombo combos to keep entire groups locked down with Crowd Control. Still likely the best RPG of the past decade.

One of the mods allows me to increase difficulty beyond the most difficult the game allows. I accidentally provoked the entire town of Arx to attack me by stealing and Jesus, that was fun. Of course I couldn't save it after killing all of them, but I now use the town as a practice for various tactics. My god, the cheese with mods. I can create 4 simulacrums of me, most of the time powerful enough to one shot NPCs unless they are really good at dodging. My primary toon I stock up with lots of invisibility potions, after I kill a few NPCs, use invisibility so they leave me alone.

Managed to past my first game on higher than difficult difficulty level by using a mod. First time ended up fighting Braccus Rex by himself and it wasn't too difficult because the other NPCs took a lot of the attacks.

The second time I fought every NPC before Braccus betrays them. This time even with enhanced mods I still died due to the enormous crowd control abilities the game has. It worsens when you use mods and enable the AI to have access of those same abilities. The third time round I said, screw trying to use spell damage, fought all NPCs and when Braccus betrayed them again, I just made myself invisibl,e came up and sneak attacked the guy with my ridiculous physical damage and killed him.

Now I am starting a new game using a mod which gives me Thor powers. Its all in the weapons so I don't really need to put points in memory that much as weapon abilities don't take up your character's memory slots. So trying a different build this time. Having a primary toon who is a tank who also does massive damage, with a secondary spellcaster specialising in buffing with some damage (rather than summoner).

Interesting thing with the mods, sometimes the NPCs generated by the mods for the purpose of selling you new skillbooks attack you or help you depending on who you fight or they run away. Basically my party of 4 with two characters loaded with Thor gear from a mod gets in trouble with the law. It seems like one of my party has a reputation. I could bribe or try to talk my way out, but screw it, lets just fight. What fellows is epic fun as I took out lots of Magisters in the Reaper's coast. It turns out the NPC selling monk skill mods and paladin skill mods don't like me going against the law. So I had to kill them and loot the gear.

Fortunately I don't really plan to experiment with the monk class this time (the monk skills came as part of a mod) and I am not planning to get great skills in paladin so I decided to leave these guys dead. I realise I can't complete certain quests now that I killed the quest giver (hey it was self defense) and I miss out on experience, but that's what cheat commander is for. :D

This Thor mod is ripe for cheesing (I think that's the term). It gives me 100% air resistance and immunity to shock and stun so I am immune to my own lightning. Take this one further and you can use eternal artefacts to boost your items, and I get extra 10% air resistance. Now when you have more than 100% of resistances, the game actually heals you. So I can use resonator's implode ability to suck enemies into me, or use void knight's black hole ability which does the same thing, but with damage and less range, then rain lightning onto them and myself, while the lightning heals me. If I ever run out, just use various circular attacks, eg the standard whirlwind abilities, and some other similar from mods.

And because the Thor items give me aerotheurge skills, I can learn various other lightning abilities from other mods, so I can keep dishing it out.

And with vanity mods, I can have my characters look even cooler while adventuring. I really love the costume the bad guys NPC have. Now I can have that too, and with Thor armour, it just constantly radiates lightning around my two characters with the armour.
