Some things I could use help with.

Post by Lord Revan »

I just got a drawing tablet to help me with my studies I there's few thing I could use a hand in.

First is there any good (or at least semi-decent) replacement for photoshop and similar programs that's free or at least quite cheap, as my budget isn't super high.

Second is the basic version of Blender still free or is there a fee for that?

Despite the name, https://www.gimp.org/ is a completely free and well featured alternative to photoshop.

Btw is it possible to setup GIMP so that thickness of your lines depends on how hard you press the pen to the tablet (without programming that thing yourself that is as my programming skills aren't good enough for that) and if so how do I set that up?

I haven't done it myself, but yes it seems this is possible.

Newer gimp instructions:

Older and some newer versions:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/48771/h ... -thickness

The default behaviour in gimp (at least older versions) was for pressure to control opacity, however you can change the setting from "pressure opacity" to "pressure size" to control the thickness.

Yeah I found how to do it, just for some reason my version of GIMP didn't recognize my tablet at first.

I know it's an old thread (I was catching up with old news) but a great open source drawing program for tablet users is Krita.

I suggest it to a lot of the digital art students I work with and it has a high uptake.

I might check it out but atm I got free access to Photoshop and it's the program I'll have to use for school work (well that or other Adobe programs), so I'll be using it for now.
