Space Marine: Dreadnought

Post by Brother-Captain Gaius »

So, the Dreadnought mode DLC just hit. Chaos Unleashed was pretty lackluster, but this definitely makes up for it. I guess it also adds a rotating king-of-the-hill type mode, but... who cares about that, right?

The Dreadnought mode is the real meat here, and I have to say it's pretty damn cool. From a fluff perspective (YEAH DREADNOUGHT DAKKA DAKKA), yeah, but it's actually a pretty cool game mode on its own merits. It's basically the Tank from Left 4 Dead, except symmetrically mirrored (only one team has it at a time, though) and then you go around capturing points for... points. Killing the other team's dread also nets points. It has some interesting ramifications re: weapon balance/loadouts, but best is the escort/ambush kind of play it naturally encourages. One team is spawning around their dread trying to assist/guard/run interference, while the other team is trying to coordinate whacking the dread before it racks up too many points (it regens health, so some team-coordinated assaults/ambushes are a must). Dread dies, and a new one becomes available for the first team who can win the central capture again.

Downside: They've done something nasty to the game's matchmaking. It's dropping people and migrating hosts like crazy.

Anyone else give it a whirl yet?
