And also another example of why the Westminster system is best.

The backstory is thus:
The new PM decreed that Parliament, while sitting, should also sit on Fridays. And then he misses the first Friday sitting along with several of the government front-benchers.

What follows is pure comedy as a cardboard cut out of the PM is brought into the House of Reps by the opposition to "fill in", multiple members are ejected by the Speaker, who eventually just cracks and calls off the sitting.
ABC News wrote: Cardboard Rudd sparks uproar in Parliament

Substitute: Tony Abbott stands next to the cardboard Kevin Rudd (ABC TV)

There have been chaotic scenes in the House of Representatives, with Opposition MPs brandishing a cardboard cut-out of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and demanding that the real Mr Rudd show his face.

The scenes came after a morning which saw Liberal MP Steve Ciobo ejected from the chamber and forced Speaker Harry Jenkins to call a 15-minute cooling-off period.

Deputy speaker Anna Burke ordered the cardboard figure be removed amid shouts of "we want the Prime Minister here".

Opposition MPs are angry that the new Labor Government has introduced Friday sittings without provision for Question Times or divisions.

Mr Rudd has opted not to attend today's first Friday sitting, deciding instead to visit an Indigenous community in New South Wales before later travelling to flood-devastated Mackay in Queensland.

The row erupted this morning when Mr Ciobo moved that there should be a Question Time every Friday, despite the Government's rules that there will be no Question Times and no divisions taken on Fridays.

It led to the Coalition moving a motion of dissent against Mr Jenkins.

Eventually, Mr Jenkins took the rare step of having Mr Ciobo escorted out of the chamber.

"Because of the gross disorderly conduct of the Member, I ask the sergeant to remove the Member," Mr Jenkins said.

Mr Jenkins ordered Mr Ciobo out of the chamber for an hour, and later suspended Parliament for 15 minutes.

When Parliament resumed, both sides quietly and peacefully discussed lifting organ donation rates before proceedings degenerated again with the arrival of the cardboard cut-out.

Mr Ciobo has defended his actions.

"It's not a stunt - there are some fundamental rights and some fundamental values as a Member of Parliament that we have to stand up for," Mr Ciobo said.

The Manager of Opposition Business in the House, Joe Hockey, says he makes no apologies for his colleagues' actions.

"It's not good enough that Mr Rudd and his ministers are not here five days a week when they demand other members of Parliament to be here five days a week," he said.

"We don't want to have cardboard Kevin here, we want the real Kevin Rudd to be here."

The motion of dissent will not be voted on until Parliament's next sitting on March 11.

The Government stands by its rules and says people will reject the Opposition's negative conduct.
The absolutely perfect timing of that photo to get Abbott in that pose means that photo is more awesome than it has any right to be.

Seriously. Anything that ensures that the politicians never feel too self important is good in my book.

And lets face it, the opposition bringing in a cardboard cut-out of the PM definitely falls into the "cutting back on self importance" category.

I wonder if we'll see copycats in the US, e.g., Democrats posing beside a cardboard George W. Bush and saying, "We want a REAL president, NOT a cardboard cutout who yes mans every line of bullshit from the Republicans!"?
Please do not make Americans fight giant monsters.

Those gun nuts do not understand the meaning of "overkill," and will simply use weapon after weapon of mass destruction (WMD) until the monster is dead, or until they run out of weapons.

They have more WMD than there are monsters for us to fight. (More insanity here.)

I don't think I've ever liked Abbot until now. I still don't like him, but for this photo alone, I'll enjoy his existence for am oment. The three other pollies you can see add to it as well.

No. Your country worships its own institutions and figureheads. Every time the president speaks, he is greeted with applause and reverence by the entire political body. Even those who speak ill of him behind his back dare not disrespect him to his face. It's absolutely disgusting, watching the way your whole country kneels before this monkey of a man whenever he shows his face.

He's treated with the same kind of polite deference as the Queen in Britain, but unlike the Queen, he's actually an active participant in government decision making.

I've come to believe the problem is inherent in combining the offices of Head of State and Head of Government. Separating the two is part of the brilliance of the parliamentary system.

Little known fact - the Oval Office cries tears of the blood of fallen American heroes from it's windows down the white facade of the White House any time someone questions the President.

And we all also know that any time someone insults the President a hundred thousand souls are barred entry to heaven and forced to go straight to hell - even those who have lived righteous and holy lives are denied their eternal reward because someone questioned the head of the US of A.

Meh.

It was a stupid, childish move no matter who performed it.

Parliament is meant to be a dignified place where representatives of the people discuss and vote on matters pertaining to the current times and national affairs. This sort of infantile behaviours does nothing but lessen even further public perception of Australian politicians.

More to the point, what planet is he on? All countries have the Parliamentary system have some sort of shenanigans going on. The former DPM calling the opposition front bench a bunch of tossers still brings a smile to my face, hehe.

I heard (and this is just my friend talking, so it could be just a pile of bullshit form him) that Rudd being out of parliament was partially related to Alexander Downer and co. deciding that instead of going to Question Time on Thursday, they would rather go to an upscale Canberra restaurant. Of course, that could just be my friend speaking shit again, so I'd take it with a grain of salt.

In any case, I found this cartoon amusing:

It's better than us Filipinis with dudes in the Senate corruption hearings half-assedly quoting Star Wars.

Is it wrong for me to think that irreverent attitudes towards government figures is actually a good thing? I mean, taking things too seriously isn't really a good thing. Look at America, with its President-worship. Or look at the Philippines, with people shrieking and calling our President "evil!" and rogue military dudes commandeering malls and hotels to piss people off before the po-lice come in with tear gas and bludgeon mutineers and journalists alike.

A laid back attitude and a cardboard mock-up can do governance wonders. That's why Australia is better than my country.

I thought that Downer and co. skipped out on the Friday sitting on the grounds that Rudd couldn't be bothered, so why should he?

Then again, knowing Downer he probably skipped Thursday too.

They might have skipped Friday, but the day they went out to lunch, they gave a stated reason of it being better than being in Question Time with Labor in government (read: we're being pissy because we miss our old seatss). So it can't have been the Friday, because the Friday session didn't have a Question Time.

Actually, I think that one of the good things about our parlimentary system is that the government and the opposition are kept on opposite sides of the room, rather than have everyone scattered around based on where they're from. It means that when parliament is sitting, you'll always have your mate sitting next to saying, "Go on, call him a wanker. I dare you ... call him a wanker." If you're all scattered around, on the other hand, you probably won't call anyone on the other side a wanker, because odds are you're sitting next to two of his]/i] mates, and that could get ugly.
