Press award ceremony not open to the press

Post by TimothyC »

Top of the Ticket (L.A. Times Political Blog) wrote: Obama White House bars press from press award ceremony

We are not making this up:

Barack Obama was elected commander in chief promising to run the most transparent presidential administration in American history.

This achievement and the overall promise of his historic administration caused the National Newspaper Publishers Assn. to name him "Newsmaker of the Year."

The president is to receive the award from the federation of black community newspapers in a White House ceremony this afternoon.

The Obama White House has closed the press award ceremony to the press.

From the president's official schedule:

"Later in the afternoon, the President and the First Lady will attend a reception with the National Newspaper Publisher Association in the State Dining Room, where they will be presented the Newsmaker of the Year award. This event is closed press."

Maybe they'll let the newspaper people pass the award through the fence.

So why is it the only sites I can find "corroborating" this tidbit are questionable blogs and obvious right-winger sites?

Even if the given source is correct, I fail to see the big deal. Barring the press from a press-initiated event brought on by promises of openness towards the press is certainly hypocritical (amusingly so, actually), but I'm not going to be up-in-arms if I don't get to see Obama receive obscure some award from a news agency. As long as he doesn't use the opportunity to secretly nationalize the tabloid industry or replace the justices of the supreme court with the staff of Salon.com, I think we can let it slide.

Lessee, a Google turns up.

1. Newsbusters.org “Exposing & Combating Liberal Media Bias”
2. Hannity.com With a 2012 election countdown already
3. Some forum.
4. Drudge
5. That's it?

Forgive me for agreeing with Zod and thinking that this "article" may not be the complete truth.

Thread locked, source questionable. MariusRoi if you find a mainstream source(Or better yet a wire report from say AP, or Reuters) hell even a Fox-News story link then you can re-post your thread.

Technically, it is an LA Times blogger, so it's not exactly as if the paper wrote an article on it.

MariusRoi has emailed me with two additional stories mentioning the lock-out of the media at the media event. The AP story he mailed me contain no mention of the event at all. So in the interest of tracking this down I'm re-opening the thread and giving a "maybe" to this occurring.

Again I'll stress none of the big eight(AP,ABC, BBC CBS,CNN, Fox,, MSNBC or Reuters) have made any mention of this yet. We are at blog level evidence at this point.

I'll tell you what... when Obama suspends habeus corpus or pursues the Bush-era legal claim that he can declare anyone a terrorist at anytime without due process of law, then you can begin bitching. Until then, you're just acting like a wanker.

In other words; the event is INVITATION ONLY

Odds are it's on the part of the people giving him the award.

You know, some alone time with the president.
I've been asked why I still follow a few of the people I know on Facebook with 'interesting political habits and view points'.

It's so when they comment on or approve of something, I know what pages to block/what not to vote for.

Don't forget we elect him COMMANDER IN CHIEF, not uh, President of the United States, Public Servant. Right-wing militarism in civil society sickens me.

I like how if he doesn't divulge every single tiny aspect of every unimportant minutiae then he's not being the most transparent President in history, myself. :)

Pretty much everything the POTUS does is "closed press." All it means is you can't show up and claim to be a reporter and get in, you need to apply beforehand to the appropriate authorities for a press pass.
