From what I've been able to find in various news articles it looks like the removal and execution of Thaek and several of his supporters was tied into business and trade involving among other things North Korean fishing and seafood industry and coal.

It's sad. When Kim Jong-un took power there were hopes that he would be the one to lead North Korea to Chinese-style economic reforms. Looks like that's not going to happen and things are going to continue as usual.
