Geez, how dare Rudd goes visit flood affected areas and indigenous communities. What better way for him to show that he cares but to stay in Parliament, far away. Out of sight, out of mind and all that. (Yes I realise people here are giving kudos to the opposition for their style rather than actual substance to their arguments, but I felt I had to raise the point).

The only thing that could be remotely good about the opposition was the funny card board cut out. Everything else with their gripe about Rudd not being there was bullshit. And Abbot is still a wanker.

I think that the Friday sitting is BS because the Friday's were usually the day when things like the various committees and hearings could get together and it also gave the MPs a chance to get back to their home electorates for the weekend to get involved with events there.

By having a hamstrung Friday sitting to private member's bills, it's not really a great move - don't get me wrong, some more private member's bills could be good (or there could be more FF nonsense), but I'd just as soon not have the whole thing and instead know that my MP was going to be back in electorate, or doing other gov't/opposition business that isn't a shouting match.

Would this be a big deal in most countries? The media here totally forgot about it after a day or two.

For sure in the US. But most countries that have a Parliament have stuff like this go on every once and a while. Canada has shouting matches all the time and there's the odd paper fight.

It was a stupid, childish move no matter who performed it.
Why?
Parliament is meant to be a dignified place where representatives of the people discuss and vote on matters pertaining to the current times and national affairs.
What does dignity have to do with the quality of decision-making and criticism?
This sort of infantile behaviours does nothing but lessen even further public perception of Australian politicians.
On the contrary, mockery of political figures may actually serve a constructive benefit in democracies. If you treat these people like royalty, they might start getting the idea that they are royalty. Witness King Bush in the US.
