In a sequel of sorts to the "Greatest Canadian" contest a few years back, a Canadian history magazine held a vote on who was the "Worst Canadian". The "winners" are:

1. Pierre Trudeau (Prime Minister)
2. Chris Hannah (musician who got his fans to vote from him)
3. Henry Morgentaler (abortionist)
4. Brian Mulroney (Prime Minister)
5. Paul Bernardo & Karla Homolka (murderers)
6. Stephen Harper (Prime Minister)
7. Celine Dion (singer)
8. Jean Chretien (Prime Minister)
9. Clifford Olson (murderer)
10. Conrad Black (newspaper magnate who was recently convicted of fraud in the US)

What does everyone think? Were any more deserving candidates missed?

I think Trudeau cops a worse rap than he deserves due to the circumstances and events of his term. And the fact that Quebec is predisposed to hating him.

Yes, we all hate Celine Dion; but people are honestly saying she is worse than a couple that raped and murdered teenage girls, including Karla Homolka's own sister?

Which is ironic because he is the main reason Quebec has the disproportionate level of power and influence it does today, which is one reason I hate him, though calling him the "worst Canadian" would be absurd.

From that list, Bernardo & Homolka take the cake.

Wait a fucking second, what the hell is Henry Morgentaler doing on the list?

Never heard of him before, but a wiki (flinches) search indicates that he was a doctor who provided illegal abortion services before it was legalized. If anything, he sounds like a champion for womens' rights, not a 'World's Worst'. How the hell did he get third place on the list, I thought a greater percentage of Canadians were more open minded than the US.

On average, yes, but go to rural areas and small towns (especially in the mid-western provinces like Alberta) and you'll find we still have no shortage of ignorant bigoted fundies up here: Even in major cities you'll find a sprinkling of fundie churches; the infamous Free Presbyterians (yup, Ian Paisley's lovable bunch) have a fairly large one in east Toronto, for instance. A variety of factors limit their political power, thankfully.

No. I was just thinking of it from perspective of several thousand people

I honestly don't really know of the others, so Black was the only one I could vote for, really.

Fair enough. Through with regard to Bernardo/Homolka, I question why Robert Pickton isn't on that list, as he is believed to have killed about 50 people.

The west is also predisposed to hating him. Alberta, in particular, hates him because of the National Energy Program. BC won't forget that he gave them the finger while his train was stopped at Sicamous. The rest just hates him because he's from the east.

Considering that the magazine in question (The Beaver) is based out of Winnipeg, the result isn't particularly surprising. Canoe has an article about it for those interested (see here).

But Black renounced his Canadian citizenship so that he could be Lorded in the UK. Therefore, he shouldn't even be on this list. Start a Worst Brit Ever poll and put him on it.

In reading that canoe.ca article, I noticed this:

At the same time as the online poll, The Beaver asked 10 historians and writers, including Ferguson, to select their own candidate for Worst Canadian.

Among those on the history panel's list: prime ministers John Diefenbaker and Sir John A. Macdonald

My knowledge of Canadian history is somewhat sketchy at best, but isn't Macdonald the man who basically united Canada into a single nation as one of the prime movers behind the BNA act?

Actually, he is in the process of getting his Canadian citizenship back. So he's your problem, mate

He was also an alcoholic who spent most of his time in office drunk. Even gave a few of his speeches while drunk.

Could well have been down to a campaign to organise voting by an anti choice group, we already know that the poll was small enough for an anarchist punk rocker to get himself to number 2.

I think the poll was Winnipeg centric, the Winnipeg Free Press ran an article on that dude, don't know whether or not The Sun( I don't get The Sun, freaking tabloid) did.

As for my vote I went for Bernardo and Homolka. I don't much like Harper, but he's just a right-wing nutjob, he didn't kill people.

I doubt very much he'll succeed with that now that he's a convicted felon who previously renounced his Canadian citizenship (eliminating the possibility of application sponsorship by relatives). I'd say legal residency is the best he can hope for at this point.

This wasn't a scientific poll, it was a self-selected sample. So as a test of Canadians' feelings overall, it has roughly the same validity as the "Greatest Canadian" contest, i.e. none.
