Please, you can't have a spontaneous demonstration/riot in Syria without written approval in triplicate from the Baathist goverment.

I wonder how long it will be before the religion of peace kills its first victim on behalf of their sky pixie over this?

Syria isn't filled with bloodthirsty fundies
Of course it isn't, Syria massacred all of them in the 1980s.

Funny how Muslims in the US seem to be silent about this.

Perhaps the new ones in Texas might have something to say?

I think it may have something to do with what Axis Kast said earlier. Muslims in the U.S. tend to be somewhat better integrated than they are in Europe, where in some countries second or third generation Muslims still can't vote. Of course the fact that the American Muslim population is substantially lower percentage-wise than the Muslim populations of European countries probably has something to do with it, too.

In any case, the US has sided with the theocrats here, as if they'll somehow forget we were ever on their shit-list:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Washington on Friday condemned caricatures in European newspapers of the Prophet Mohammad, siding with Muslims who are outraged that the publications put press freedom over respect for religion.

By inserting itself into a dispute that has become a lightning rod for anti-European sentiment across the Muslim world, the United States could help its own battered image among Muslims.

"These cartoons are indeed offensive to the belief of Muslims," State Department spokesman Kurtis Cooper said in answer to a question. "We all fully recognize and respect freedom of the press and expression but it must be coupled with press responsibility. Inciting religious or ethnic hatreds in this manner is not acceptable."

"We call for tolerance and respect for all communities for their religious beliefs and practices," he added.

Indeed. This might improve our image for a day ... until the next wedding bombing in Iraq. Then it's shit list for us again, and we'll have pissed off the Europeans again. I might also point out the obvious that the US condemning an exercise of free speech is fucking hypocritical.
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

Took the words out of my mouth. Hollywood has always depicted America as the land of the free, but not free if it flies in the face of religious dogma it would seem.

That has been in caricature for ages
it wass nearly a daily running gag in the french emissions "les guignols de l'Info"
with Ratzinger being called "Adolf 2"; the official catholic priest being a sylvester stallone puppet having an "excuse bibble" to explain each case of pedophilia
or that (NSFW)

Caricature of the catholics is the norm in Europe
However if the muslims gain the battle, i wouldn't be surprise if hard right catholic organisation try to use this as a precedent to block any later attack on any religion

Why should they say anything? Muslims in this country have nothing to do with it.

Should atheists in the US run for the microphones every time atheists do something abroad?

CAIR-OH: React to Cartoons with Restraint, Education
Source: Columbus Dispatch

Dr. Asma Mobin-Uddin, president of the central Ohio chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said she hopes Muslims will respond to the cartoons "with restraint and compassion and education." That's what Muhammad did when people vilified him, she said.

Mobin-Uddin said she doubted that newspapers would have published similar cartoons offending Jews or Christians. "I think there is a different standard," she said, in which attacks on Islam are justified as free speech but those on other faiths are condemned as hate speech.

The American-Islamic council soon will begin an education campaign about the life and message of Muhammad, Mobin-Uddin said.

It´s interesting to see how these protesting muslims are creating an even more caricature like image of themselves than any caricature ever could have done.

Joe, Surlethe, Ubiquitous, Durandal... speaking of the State Department brouhaha, LGF linked to three pages on the same story -- and all three stories with different speakers for the same statement. However, here is the State Department's own take (2/3 down), which was excerpted here (right wing, but source-wise I consider it as legit as the State Department's and there's little commentary).

Strange that Israeli Arabs can take it this far, though. :? Ditto for Londoners...

I read that the Swedish and Chilean embassies were all in the same building.

Perhaps this thread should be renamed into "General Mohammed Cartoon Thread"; so we don't clutter up N*P by a billion topics related to this?

Here's some quoted from a US muslim woman from another forum:
"Unless plain speaking is allowed, clear thinking is denied. There can be no good reason for denying freedom of expression, there is no case to rebut, only the empty slogans of people inspired by selfishness and unrestrained by morality. The proponents of this nonsense neither understand the implications of what they say, nor why they are saying it: they are insane."
Not sure if she's quoting someone else there or herself but it shows her stance.
