I wonder if this has any correlation to our current administration...

Funny how you should mention this. I saw a young boy wearing a hairdo that was growing into a mullet yesterday.Superman wrote:Next thing you know, mullets will be back.
That said, I wonder how many drivers who threatened to boycott actually followed through.
Not a Nascar fan.
I didnt watch because racing(other than horse) is dumb. I figure after all the news stories about danika patrick the ratings were bound to jump.

My dad watches Nascar on a fairly regular basis, but to be fair, he has mentioned to me that he knows how stupid and commercialized it is.

Well...NASCAR tends to be popular with rural redneck types, who apparently see some sort of value in watching cars make left turns all day. And we all know the intelligence of your average rural redneck type.

It has very little to do with intelligence. When I moved to North Carolina from Maine in 2nd grade, I was utterly stunned at how far behind us the classes were. It wasn't even because the kids couldn't keep up, they simply treated everybody like morons and kept repeating themselves on the the same information for several days even after the tests. When we moved back up to Maine durring my highschool years I had to struggle at first because I was so far behind in the basics everybody else learned in middle school hadn't been covered yet. The 'stupid sothern redneck' cliche is being kept alive and well by its own school system.HemlockGrey wrote:Well...NASCAR tends to be popular with rural redneck types, who apparently see some sort of value in watching cars make left turns all day. You can successfully teach calculus to average early high-schoolers. While my high school only started teaching calculus in the final last 2 years of high school (as a fairly advanced optional), I get a laugh when I hear people complaining about algerbra as being hard in high school.

I certainly felt like I'd lost a couple IQ points after the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday .... a record number of cautions (22, 23?) for a NASCAR race, and that is *not* a good record to break.

Sorry, the correlation between ruralism and stupidity has been fairly well established.

So how exactly does the popularity of a racing event mean people are stupid? You do realise the Indy 500 is one of the most legendary races ever, right?
Look at me, I mean in addition to football and icehockey, I watch motorsports almost religiously, and even obscure events like hillclimbing, Bol'd'or or the Isle of Man TT races, just think of what a massively inbred ass-backwards undereducated democrat-hating white supremacist redneck republican moonshining hillbilly I must be, jeez.
Or maybe it's just that people in general whereever you go enjoy sporting events more than "intellectual" dittos like political debates or collective yoga and an institution such as the Indy 500 is guaranteed to draw as much attention as any other major sporting event.

And that rebuttal is totally irrelevant to any argument over the validity of the statement that rural areas are full of ignorance.wilfulton wrote:Correlation is not causation.ggs wrote:To be fair, it is the correlation between ruralism and ignorance that has been fairly well established.HemlockGrey wrote:Sorry, the correlation between ruralism and stupidity has been fairly well established.

And ignorance and stupidity quite often look the same. You have to take the time to get to know a person to know which they are.ggs wrote:To be fair, it is the correlation between ruralism and ignorance that has been fairly well established.HemlockGrey wrote:Sorry, the correlation between ruralism and stupidity has been fairly well established.

Stupidity is born out of ignorance. When one refuses to admit his own ignorance and proceeds to draw illegitimate conclusions in spite of it, then he is a stupid person.
