Janeway's promotion, something interesting.

Post by Alyeska »

Most of us grumbled at seeing Janeway an Admiral. But I just realized something about her promotion.

TNG First Season, Riker first takes XO position on Enterprise with Picard in command. 2364

Voyager is stranded in the Delta Quandrant. 2371

Voyager returns from the Delta Quandrant. 2378

Basing the 15 year time span Picard gave on Riker being his XO, Nemesis takes place in 2379. That means Nemesis is a year after End Game.

Janeway went from a Captain to a three star Admiral in a single year.

Most likely the writers or costume people didn't know the difference between the various admirals ranks and gave her whatever was closest to hand.

Was Admiral Janeway wearing three pips, or two? The lighting made it difficult to see the insigne on her collar.

She should have been awaiting court-martial.

Problem is you can't court martial a public hero. No matter how badly she screwed up, the public will love her for her actions against the Borg. Better to promote her to a desk job where she can do no more harm and has to simply relay orders back and forth with doing relatively little of substance herself.

Too lenient, I'd have tossed her to the Borg if only they weren't pussified and scared shitless of her by now.

I do long for the days of being hung, drawn and quartered to come back, public hero or not, she was annoying! The Dilbert Principle does hold true though, she is a desk jockey now, no more ship fucking for her.

Court-Marshalling her would probly get the UFP a lot of civial unrest. Sure she screwed her crew out of 5 years of their life, cost many their whole life, and violated the temporal prime directive on several occasions, but she would be seen as a hero for getting her crew back by those not in starfleet, or who really care about the prime directives, and by thier families. Also the whole saving Earths ass from the borg's transwarp hub on Earth's door step. She diserves every punishment starfleet could throw at her, but it would never happen, so they take her control away from a ship and lives of a crew and make her a highly ranked messanger.

And Riker should have been broken half a dozen times for gross negligence (not the least of which was losing the Enterprise in Generations), but StarFleet isn't that competant an organization.

Additionally, Janeway has some powerful friends in the UFP. Remember all of the connections she has made with people both established in power, and with people who were moving up in life. That probably counted for something considerable in her promotion.

I think they would have promoted her. She was lost in space with her ship for 7 years and managed (Even if she did a crapy job of it) to bring the ship back with a good part of her crew plus at the same time she would have brought back date on many different speaces and plants not yet knowed about. They would have done it as a reward to her. Plus they would not know fully how she had acted and behaved during the mission.

Strictly speaking, Alyeska, Captain Janeway's swift promotion to flag rank is not unprecedented in Star Trek. Almost immediately upon returning from the Enterprise's five-year mission, Captain Kirk was promoted Admiral and named to the Commanding Admiral's staff as Chief of Starfleet Operations, according to The Motion Picture, set only three years later.

Clearly, then, Admiral Janeway is meant to be Mr Brannon's and Mr Braga's "modern Trek version of Admiral Kirk. The primary difference, of course, is that the audience was never left with the unsettling notion that the words "general," "martial," and "court" -- not necessarily in that order -- rightfully belonged somewhere in his very near future.

Well, I think Janeway's rapid promotion and probably her whole career can be explained by whatever she's been doing to get that smoker's voice. No what could cause that in a society that doesn't smoke...cigarettes? :D

This would be after she completed her first mission, correct? Then I see no reason for starfleet not to promote her. She would have taken command of perilis conditions and survived. Plus, if anyone remembers, Kirk was promoted from Captain to Admiral in one sitting. It would appear that StarFleet, while not choking off officers like darth Vader, does seem to kill them off. Promoting them to Admiral ensures that they cannot do anything important, therefore not mess anything up.

Make sense?

Kirk was the greatest SF captain of all times. Janeway, murdered a crewmember ("Tuvix"), attempted to murder a Star Fleet officer ("Equinox, Part II") and then PUNISHED the officer who saved him, utterly shattered the Prime Directive, ("Swarm" as an example) and committed high treason by making an alliance with the Federation's worst enemy ("Scorpion")

As an admiral she can't do any more damage. A real captin with his salt does what ever the feck his/her morals dictate in the example of Kirk and occasionally Picard.

There, I was correct. either they would kill her, or put her on some remote planet to spen the rest of her life there. ex, Rura Pente, the klingon prison planet(asteroid, actually).

However, are we allowed to assume that star Fleet looked over her record and saw the conditions therin? Or, for the sake of the movie, they needed to pull a familiar character up and make them an Admiral. Well, Janeway was well known.

At the risk of sounding too sypathetic, Id say Janeway deserved her promotion.
First of all, the rank of captain, in the navy, is the same as a full bird Colonel, one rank below rear(one star) admiral. (Not like army or marines, where captain is below major, leutenant colonel, and colonel.)
One rank of promotion, after 7 years time in grade, into an organisation that is understrength due to combat losses is nothing to blink at.
EVERYONE in a military during war gets promoted FAST, if they aren't blatent fuckups. Combat losses must be filled.
Hmmmmmm.

Emperor, have you even watched "Voyager?" Janeway has done so many stupid things and violated so many Federation laws that she should have been sent to a penal colony! Instead they promote her? What the hell...

You know what it is, Berman and Bragga seem to think that Star Trek fans actually LIKE Janeway (which they don't), so they want to keep her in the stupid show somehow.

Oh no, no way should Janeway have been promoted. She got lost on the way to her first fucking assignment. It was a simple assignment, too:

Go here, get your pet Vulcan back. Duh. Instead, seven years (and one major war) later, "Gee whiz, guys! Hi! I'm back! Hihihihi!!!"

Yeah. Uh, sterling fucking performance, let's give the dizzy bitch a raise.
