Even if there was some cauterizing, and I don't think phasers of any type cauterize on kill, you still punched holes inside their guts. That'll kill anyone sooner or later. Factor in the things like shock to the organ damage and it'd be lethal quickly.

On phasers.com (or whatever the link was) it described "cutting phasers" but now that I think about it, they look pretty much like the phasers everyone else on the Enterprise A use in that movie.

I figured it was just a certain setting (but not disintegrate).
