Idea for Trek show

Post by Slartibartfast »

Here's the premise: a regular guy/girl from the 21st century gets somehow transported to the TNG/DS9/Voyager era (trapped in freezium carbide or sucked by a distortion, whatever). He ends up in a ship, this is just any regular show ship, with huge amounts of technobabble and far-fetched solutions for all problems.

The idea is that every time technobabble is going to be used as a copout ("If we polarize the nadion flow, there is a chance that the fuzzymetric compensators of the bunkhead will short out and open for exactly 28.3 seconds"), the guy will come and make remarks like "You just made that up!" or "Why don't we simply blow the door?". There will be much controversy about the guy's suggested methods for dealing with everything. Whenever common sense is used (his), it works. When technobabble is used, it might work but nothing ever goes exactly as planned (like in the shows).

I'm guessing this person would have to be a bit like Crichton from Farscape.

Now the question is, how does Col. Jack O'Neil get from the SGC to the 24th century.

Yeah, it would be interesting except that O'Neil is too exagerated as a tech-ignorant. I mean most conversations would be very annoying:

"What's this old thing?"
"It's a replicator, it takes matter and changes its structure, producing any kind of..."
"ARggg! Too much techtalk! Head hurts! Say it in english!"
"Ok, you push button and say loudly what you want. Then glowy thingy appears and it turns into what you asked."
"You scientists and your toys..."

I was thinking more of a guy that could actually grasp a basic amount of real science and could tell when a guy is just making up big words or using actual science.

Keep that attitude up and your posts won't last long in the PST.

Alyeska, this is Trek bashing yes. But it has a point and there's no reason to send it to the Hall of Shame.

I am not dissing St...I did like the original films (save for no'five...did ANYONE like that?) but the series just went downhill from there

The thread's tone is a little hostile, but the idea is not completely without merit. I would like to see some Starfleet officers who act like real officers, and expect their subordinates to simply do their jobs without wasting time explaining the inner workings of the damned subspace field coil transducer blah blah blah.

The biggest problem is that the solution to a problem in Trek tends to be alteration of the ship in order to combat it. This is simply insane from both a technical and dramatic standpoint. You don't alter and redesign technological devices on the fly in response to an emergency; that's just asking for trouble. And dramatic situations are best served by using what you've got in an ingenious way, not by redesigning what you've got to add new capabilities. There's a reason people still make fun of MacGyver to this day.

If there are things you dislike, aim at those instances, do not label the entirety of Star Trke and insult it as a whole. There is also a difference between criticizing aspects of Trek and merely bashing it as a whole.

Alyeska's right, this is a silly thread.

But Trek has done stupid and flawed things in a vain attempt to push the series and the plots along ever since TOS ended and that's the truth.

Hey. The TOS movie were pretty damn good. ST6:UC is one of the best sci-fi movies of all time.

Nu-Trek, egh, it's crap.

Alyeska, much as you have mod powers, Kanos has deemed this thread worthy of existing which means youre plum outta luck.

On topic:

I'd love to see this show. I agree, O'Neill needs to be the guy. Bring along Teal'c for fun. He's a Wars fan (WOO!) and I'm sure he'd LOVE to rip apart Trek :)

Actually, I wouldn't freak out if you locked it. I do believe in allowing mods some leeway, although I think locking/moving is usually a vastly preferable solution to deletion.

I sent it to the HOS and Stormbringer bounced it back. I will leave it open for another day to see if anyone can post something slightly less insulting towards Trek, but is still in line with the topic itself.

Well, I agree that it's a bit of a Trek-bashing thread but it's not so trollish that it belongs in the Hall of Shame (look at the other people in there; one must generally be an unrepentant liar or some other form of asshole to get one's thread in there). I would just lock it if I were you.
