The Rules v1.5

Post by Simplicius »

Credit all work that is not your own. Lack of credit will be rectified and plagiarists, when found, will be subject to disciplinary action as per board rules. Flickr's ToS requires that images be linked back to their Flickr page, so keep that on your radar too.

Link or thumbnail images wider than 1000 pixels on the long side. Not only does this permit the whole image to be viewed at once even on standard monitors, but most images look worse at full resolution anyway. A quick resize with a little Unsharp Mask goes a long way.

Image-heavy threads should be marked as such. If you are concerned about the aggregate size of your image thread, you can thumbnail-link the images, or resize to 600-800 pixels and apply 70-80 percent JPEG compression. Odds are no-one will notice.

Know the difference between 'critique' and 'compliment.' "Nice colors" is not a critique. If you solicit critiques, be prepared to accept negative ones. Conversely, don't rip the shit out of someone's work unless they've asked for it; there's always a polite way to give crit when necessary.

Posts not pertaining to art, music, or photos will be moved to a more appropriate forum at moderators' discretion.

Beauty contests are forbidden. Also forbidden are the posting of photos of other SDN-ers without their permission and stalking/picture-begging.

NSFW images should be noted in the thread title and linked as appropriate.

Most Youtube videos belong in Testing, or in a topically appropriate forum. Feel free to post original works if they are creative in nature. Music videos are fine if they are accompanied by some text about the artist/composer, album, or song*. The same goes for videos meant to illustrate posts about cinema. Music videos of your own songs, or footage of your own performances, are totally cool.

*or genre, or instrument, etc.

Do not revive old threads unless: 1.) You are the OP, adding new and relevant content to your thread, or 2.) The thread is a megathread to which you are adding new, relevant content. If you like the work in an old thread, PM the creator to say so.

"Funny image threads," image macro dumps, and other rehashes of stale Internet-generated content belong in Testing.

Not a rule per se, but a suggestion: If anyone's going to do a music review, a basic suite of information in the thread title would be helpful (as applicable: artist, album or song, genre, and region of origin) so people get an idea of what the thread is about even with obscure artists and genres, or ones with names that don't obviously pertain to music.
