Re: Hattoran Chronicle Ch3
Hattoran Chronicle Chapter 3: You Knew What I Was When You Picked Me Up Fuyu's fingers flew over the runabout's control console with the speedy confidence of someone who'd spent their entire lives as an operator, despite this having been the first one of this type he had ever seen. Operation of loca...

Hattoran Intermission: The OCP
"An Outside Context Problem was the sort of thing most civilizations encountered just once, and which they tended to encounter rather in the same way a sentence encountered a full stop." — Iain M. Banks, Excession The Hattorans all have a job to do, and given the nature of the Incursions, ...

Re: Hattoran Chronicle --- (ST/FF) Ch1 up
Ok... I'm lost. WHICH FF?? Cause this don't sound like Final Fantasy to me. I fucked up the title line and now I can't change it q.q I don't even remember what I meant. fanfic? damn To be clear it's 29th century star trek fanfic, that I may just file the serial numbers off of later to make it gener...

Hattoran Chronicle --- (ST fanfic) Ch1 up
In the 29th century, Mankind faced a turning point. Content till now and not knowing that they could be part of a larger, pan-galactic community. They would be tested. -------------------------------- -------------------------------- HATTORAN CHRONICLE There is a hostile sky above me. Man will never...

Re: theoretically what would happen
I feel like if Transporters were routinely weaponized then transporter countermeasures would just as routinely be utilized. The movies and shows have described a vast array of ways a transporter signal can be disrupted or otherwise prevented. Having these countermeasures and place as a general order...

Re: theoretically what would happen
The question isn't why they don't beam people into space. Its why they don't beam them to nowhere, or just scramble them where they stand. Since they can localize and do that specific thing to individual objects (weapons), they could also just beam hearts out of chests (or, again, just scramble the...

Re: theoretically what would happen
Actually, if you have a Runabout, disable the safeties, arm the weapons, and start firing. You're inside the bloody starship, beyond it's shields and armor. Of course, if you have a Runabout, and are trying to stop an insurrection, couldn't you just use it's transporters to beam insurrectionists in...

Re: theoretically what would happen
Thanks for the responses it's meant as a sort of MAD threat so I kind of want to be sure the conventional thought isn't that it would just collapse the warp bubble and drop them into normal space and maybe give someone a bump on the head.

To a Starship traveling at Warp if a Runabout inside its shuttle bay engaged it's own warp drive without leaving the interior?

Re: Interstellar (movie)
Hard sci-fi. I would not call it that. It's fantasy and maybe moral parable with the trappings and visals of hard sci-fi, much like 2001 was. As for the IMAX question, I saw it in a dome and it was a bit overwhelming, I think the projectionist just said 'fuck it' and extended the thing over the who...

Re: Shooting discussion devolves
My hyperbolic use of the word "rabid" is just a derogatory reaction to the stereotypical, outspoken, gun advocate who believes that the 2nd Ammendment was handed down to us from Mt. Sinai or something. But of course I'm willing to compromise. I'd prefer a total ban of civilian firearms, b...

Re: Shooting discussion devolves
Hunting (how many gun owners actually use their weapons for hunting/own hunting rifles)? This too depends on where you live. Hunting is more valid here in Colorado, where there is actual wilderness to hunt in, then it is in a place like New York. I will note, however, that the rifles used in huntin...

Re: Shooting discussion devolves
Exactly. The only thing close to a serious argument I've heard in opposition was "well then you have to reload alot more". Which is 1) Tough titties, you baby, and 2) The point. Yes, we agree. Any self-defence scenario that isn't solved with five properly aimed rounds is probably happenin...

Re: Shooting discussion devolves
because the other guy might be bigger, is probably armed, is probably way more experienced at hurting people, and I don't like pushing the odds. A gun gives me the ability to fight back no matter what the skill level, chemical state, and physicality of my attacker is. No other device can do the sam...

Re: Shooting discussion devolves
Seriously, if a person is going to commit a gun-related crime, they're going to be prepared to do it and have the element of surprise. If you're just shopping for groceries or in a movie theater, what makes you think you're going to turn around all cowboy style, and save a crowded room full of peop...

Re: Shooting discussion devolves
So in a rational society, only those deemed worthy (by whom?) are granted the privilege of being able to protect themselves from the worst of that same society, who likely don't follow the same rules? Pretty sure you have the right (given by authorities, God whoever) to defend yourself. I don't see...

Or you know, you could have police? Or not be terrified of your own shadows and realise that you aren't at imminent risk every day and the dangers to yourself, your family and society of a paranoid like you owning a gun are far higher than the dangers you face from criminals. police have no obligati...

CHARTY CHART CHART Hey if that chart tracked only criminal violence (instead of also including lawful self-defense and suicide) it might actually be useful. Lumping all gun-related death together does not give an accurate and useful picture of anything. That chart would look the same with cellphone...

Re: Falling Skies: Pilot (1x01)
The pilot was meh. I can't take the "mechs" seriously, with their goofy obvious targeting system. 1. The aliens don't see human-visible light. As an example, we use laser sights because they're invisible to our own eyes until they 'strike' a target. However, if a creature that can see inf...

Re: SGU 2x2 Aftermath
In the SyFy promo video on gateworld for next week... There's a shot that looks like a row of stargates, the first of which is in pieces, where Rush's voiceover says "this ship has sizeable energy reserves." Guess the idea that we'd find a stargate seeding ship in season two and resupply ...
