Becoming a Refugee (Worst Case Scenario Exercise)
Okay, I figured out a new exercise as a counterpoint to a lot of "Zombopocalypse Preparation" fantasy worst-case scenario exercises, I'll try to run over it as best I can... Here are the rules. We are going to assume that you are fleeing a doomsday scenario, either plague, war, government ...

Re: My Bowie Knives (Lots of Pics!)
Michael Garrity suggested putting a brass spine on the back of the South Texas Stampede Giant Bowie, so this is what I came up with. I originally designed the blade to have a plain back so it could be batonned through wood, but hey, why not. Although I felt that the brass spine adds more complexity ...

Re: My Bowie Knives (Lots of Pics!)
I have to ask: have you already made a knife? Are you studying how to make one (I'm guessing in a school?)? Yeah, I'm studying to become a Mechanical Engineering Technologist. I haven't ever made a real knife before, aside from small, throwing darts I used to make out of bits of steel drillrod and ...

Re: My Bowie Knives (Lots of Pics!)
Doublethanks, looks like I'll be steering clear of that then. :banghead: I wasn't aware that CPM S30V's problems were more than just metal fatigue properties. Stainless always has been a little finicky heat-wise, but I didn't think it would've been as bad as that though. Think for the bigger knives ...

Re: Yo, I got scorpions.
Two words: Boric Acid. Buy a couple squeeze bottles of that and make lines around your stuff, just as if you were creating lines of sand. Boric acid effectively creates a 'do not cross' line for those things, because it destroys the chitin of their exoskeletons, but is safe enough to use around your...

Re: My Bowie Knives (Lots of Pics!)
All very nice designs. Do you intend to polish all the blades up like that? Thanks! Yup, I will probably polish them all up to be nice and shiny. That does remind me though, a tactical line might also be a good idea. I should rerender them all with the blades and the handles blacked, that would loo...

Re: My Bowie Knives (Lots of Pics!)
Am I correct that the upper "edge" is sharpened as well on the South Texas Stampede Giant Bowie Knife? Yup, the upper edge, the Swedge, on the South Texas Stampede Giant Bowie Knife is given something of a false edge, for style and also to aid in tip penetration. The Alamo is given a slig...

Re: My Bowie Knives (Lots of Pics!)
If this is a custom work, I'd say skip on 440c and go straight for something like VG10 (or even one of the AUS steels) or one of the Böhler N65 or so steels. From what I've read, these stainless steels are more expensive but are better than carbon steels (plus, you have less of a rust problem). Of ...

Re: My Bowie Knives (Lots of Pics!)
Thanks Edi. Why carbon steel? Looks like a solid knife. Thank you! I picked 5160 carbon steel rather than stainless this time because I felt that the carbon steel might be a little easier to forge and the ferretic stainless steels aren't as tough and elastic as the carbon steels are. I figured that ...

Re: Shuttle Discovery Completes Final Flight
Wow. Thirty nine flights into space, and thirty nine re-entries. I think that's incredible - I would've thought that the metal fatigue from all the stress of entering and returning to the atmosphere and the old computers would've grounded the shuttle a long time ago. Guess they don't make things lik...

My Bowie Knives (Lots of Pics!)
Howdy pardner, it's Talk Like A Cowboy Day!* Yeehaw! Yeah, I know I've been working at many different projects for a long time, the bolt pistol, my rifle (the improved AR-15), and my other knife, an improved Fairbairn-Sykes, but I haven't had the time or the money or the tools to do any of the work ...

Re: A specific kind of stalemate?
Hmm. I'm reading about the Nash Equilibrium, and it definitely would apply in this scenario because there's no advantage to changing course even if everyone else knew about it, although details on that particular thing are still up in the air at this point. Indeed though, all these terms are really ...

A specific kind of stalemate?
I got a quick question: Imagine an allegiance system between an odd-numbered (of three or more) group of factions in a state of political deadlock with each other with relatively equal power, the key thing here being that all of the factions are mutually intimidated by each other, but unwilling to g...

Re: I'm designing my own gun! (WIP)
Would some sort of flip up clearing handle work then? Say a piece of the ejection tube can flip up on edge and be pulled forward along a groove to manually clear any stuck casings. Most of the time they would self clear exactly like the FN2000, but jams are now a quick fix. I really don't understan...

That's why I recognised it, we use it as well. Fun times, did you have any trouble using touch - infer centre? Hee hee, awesome. The 'snap to' selection thing for the centre? Usually I haven't experienced any problems with that. The features usually work the way they're supposed to, well, most of t...

Re: I'm designing my own gun! (WIP)
The forward ejection on the FN2000 never really looked like a good idea to me, it looks like a jam waiting to happen. I'd be looking to get rid of the old brass downwards like the P90 or forwards without the use of a tunnel. Ejecting straight down would be great, although I'm hoping to use STANAG m...

Howdy guys, sorry about the delay! It's taken me a bit of time to get back to this. I'm going to play Devils advocate for the purposes of this post however, ...

Re: I'm designing my own gun! (WIP)
Will you make a short animation showing how the internal components work and how are they different from the standard AR-15? Yup! I definitely will for comparison, but that'll be a long, long way off; I've still got to finish the AR-15 first. I think what I'll try to do in that case would be to exp...

I'm designing my own gun! (WIP)
Before I begin, I'd like to give a big thanks to the guys at FirearmFiles.com and CNCguns.com for providing me with the non-parametric models and detail drawings I needed for this model. Many of the drawings were in terrible condition, but they were legible enough for me to create my own model from ...

Re: Medal of Honor
Personally I think they should do a Call of Duty: Paleolithic Warfare, but maybe that's just me. If they do, instead of the radio chatter, I vote for them making actors speak in caveman grunts and howls with subtitles, so in the radio chatter's place, we would hear and see: "Ook ook! Unga bung...

Re: Does having music on help you write?
Me, I always do, with few exceptions, even for working. But usually the only things I listen to while I'm actually working or writing are either easy listening jazz or soft ambient music with a steady, constant beat and consistent rhythm. I save the heavy metal and the hard rock for when I don't nee...
