The issue as I see it is Style Over Substance, and how important that is. While its true that its bad to ignore someones arguments when they insult you, packaging is important. Consider it PR. People are more likely to accept what you say if you treat them civil like rather then go in guns blazing....

I generally agree with what's been said in this thread, but I wonder sometimes if people around here have too much of an itchy trigger finger. I try (and don't always succede, not by a long shot) to give a newcomer a break in my first reply, under the assumption that maybe he's just been shortchang...

The Senate is supposed to represent this board. Why follow any different rules for discourse? By definition, only the upper-crust of the board's debaters are made senators, so I don't think we'll see too much needless flaming or me-tooing here. I don't think the OP or subsequent discussion was in r...

In the case of Liars and trolls, I tend to just rip them a new arsehole as I'm not wasting keyboard time writing out long passages of what would be needless verbiage. If someone lies to me I'll attack that lie. If someones entire point is a pack of lies I'll attack the points, the person, their line...

Re: [Discussion] Conduct and Civility
I think the problem with civility is that too many trolls and liars have used it as a shield. With the ASVS heritage, the flame is seen as the manner for discourse here and so too many of the 'hangers on' jump at the chance to show their flame 'skills'. I have no problem being civil with another deb...

For anyone interested, there are 45 Senate members - 27 have voted, 2 have abstained, 1 cannot vote (me). So there are still 15 votes pending. This poll goes on until 22 votes are cast on either of the options or 2 days are up. Whichever comes first. Poll was started at 2100 on 2nd Jan 06 GMT so it ...

Gentlemen, there are still 15 votes uncast, which is enough to change the result, therefore the thread will stay unblemished with arguments not to the point. The point is : should there be a Christian Forum. The point is not : should there be a multi-faith forum. That argument does not belong in her...

OK, just to be clear. I see one flame in this thread I will come down o that person like a ton of bricks! Also my OP covered the whole 'The board is basically an atheist Forum' bit. So that argument is done . If other religious groups want a Private Forum then they can ask for one and will have to s...

I've drunk out of 5 gallon watercans filled with beer and Vodka before, so 3 drinks could be enough to give alchohol poisoning to a small village.CmdrWilkens wrote:I've only had three drinks tonight, there's work tomorrow.Rob Wilson wrote:Imagine?CmdrWilkens wrote:imagine me drunk here

Additionally, I propose that an affirmative vote on this poll is insufficient--a follow-up a general poll should follow. After all, it would not do to create a private forum if it won't get much actual participation. Once up then they can ask for members to sign up in OT or SLAM. I'm guessing there...

Point of Order Mr Chancellor. Selection to the Senate is quite sufficant, there is no need for such mindless drearyness and it is only the the illbred unwashed that need worry about such matters and what need we concern ourselves with such nonsence? Move that Members statement be striken. Point of ...

I've yet to see any issues with sigs that go beyond the normal modding issues (EG idiots insulting others in sigs) and those are swiftly and harshly crushed. Perhaps someone could point me to some violations or somesuch as to why we would be altering sig size. Just to give ourselves a perk (in whic...

I'm fine with that. In fact, the Senator from Nova Caesaria proposes we keep the current size limits for regular members, enforce those limits more strongly, and adopt a larger limit for Senators. I know I'm over the current limit, and I think my sig is about as big as good taste would allow. Since...

Updated Rule 2. (who can nominate and what happens if you try to flame in the nomination threads)
Added Rule 7. (so in future I can't vote except to break ties. Stops an unintended bias on my part.)
