Re: Superhuman Sorting System

Whateley on the other hand tries to explain mutant (they're almost all mutants) powers via "Pattern Theory" by looking at recurring patterns in powers, and grouping people by the source or nature of their powers. This isn't quite right. Pattern Theory is the explanation of how powers work...

Re: My Little Pony

It has been hinted that the "Dark Secret" that may ruin the wedding is that Cadence is in fact not a pure alicorn. And either her wings or horn is false or non usable. That would allow Hasbro to still sell all the toys they want, while still keeping Celestia and Luna as "Real' Alicor...

Re: My Little Pony

To be honest I don't like it and like the old even less. They seem to be reading too much into animation goofs (like I'd argue all non-Princess winged unicorns are, until we see something definite) and despite what the picture says, we have no idea what species Rarity's father is. He could be an Ear...

Re: Harry Potter and the Muggle World

Alkaloid, this is not correct or, at least, a vastly over simplification. First of all, Arthur was not given a Department, but moved from being the head of one Office to a slightly bigger one. The Ministry is structured something like this… First you have the Ministry as a whole, headed by the Minis...

Re: Laptop's dead; looking for a new one

I am currently looking at a XPS 17 from Dell. Its a bit better than the Optimus II for only a little more money. Same graphics card, same hard drive, more RAM and a i7 rather than i5 processor. I also know someone with one and he likes it.

What do people think?

Re: Laptop's dead; looking for a new one

Try PC Specialist, they make them to your requirements and their pricing isn’t that bad and for £800 you can get a pretty top range laptop. A company they warned me about was Asus: bad support and bad product quality I've got an Asus and my only complaint was that the screen fell off (thankfully wi...

Re: Laptop's dead; looking for a new one

Just as a point of clarification, are you absolutely committed to a laptop being your main and/or only computer? Eight hundred quid is a hell of a lot of money to drop on a machine that's going to be a huge pain to upgrade or even maintain and is quite possibly a write-off if you spill your tea on ...

Laptop's dead; looking for a new one

Well it finally happened. My Acer Aspire 7720 laptop died. After eating two power adaptors, loosing its sound wheel, loosing most of the guard fins from its heating grate, having numerous other bits fall off and a lot of other stuff, it finally had enough. The screen is now a mesh of coloured lines ...

There's some evidence for ubiquitous replicators. This for example, from The Wounded. (mealtime for the newly-weds) O'BRIEN: What is it? KEIKO: Kelp buds, plankton loaf and sea berries. O'BRIEN: Sweetheart, I'm not a fish. KEIKO: It's very healthy. I had this every morning when I was growing up. O'B...

Re: Harry Potter and the Muggle World

Dumbledore would never explain his plans, though. He would make the person who needs the most help do it on his own, in the hopes of growing, in a time of great peril. He is easily the most despicable character in the entire series. IIRC, getting summoned by the stone is supposed to be really unple...

Re: Harry Potter and the Muggle World

Moving on from that, could Harry Potterverse magic be in a state of decline because every few generations or so there's some muckity muck who gets it in his/her head to conquer the Wizarding World and those who rise against that dark wizard usually are the most competent and most of them die in the...

Re: David Cameron Descends Into Self-Parody

Cameron’s speech was funny, but I think the WTF highlight so far has to be Theresa ‘Crazy Cat Lady’ May. For those who don’t know May was using her speak to play to the crowd and bash the Human Rights Act and the European Convention of Human Rights (particularly Article 8, which guaranties the right...

Watching the latest episode now. Lion O, what an idiot. Challenging the Duelist because he got insulted. His mission is more important. Um, no. He didn't fight because he was insulted. He fought because his father was insulted. A big difference. Especially because said father was recently killed. S...

Re: Technological progress of Fantasy settings.

While the above is true, I’m also a mite wary of people claiming the opposite. How many times have you read people say ‘setting X has magic to do Y so they should use Y to create an industrial civilisation’? While this is true in the long term, why should it be true in the short term? It took us tho...

Re: Hitchhiker's Guide-verse vs. Star Wars

Hitchhiker's Guide canon is a complex issue and made even more so by the Whole Sort of General Mishmash introduced in the last novel. The radio plays and the novels seem to take place in alternate universe which occasionally intersect, via the aforementioned mishmash. Though its not said, its possib...

My DS Lite is getting pretty long in the tooth as it is, so I might just wind up picking one of these up. I still have an original DS, an original DS bought on the very day of the UK release in fact. So the same might be getting true for me :D I’ve avoided the DS Lite, the DSi and the Nintendo DSi ...

Well, I just got a email informing me that I have '306,405 Unspent Skill Points Await You in EVE Online.' Between that, and the five free days it’s offering me, I think I might give EVE another go, as soon as I get off work for the holidays. I think I was flying a Myrmidon when a lost stopped. Re-bu...

Re: When did Hogwarts get a train?(Harry Potter)

It's worth noting that meaning is distinct in literary parlance from setting, events and all that. The author has special authority to clarify such things, but their assignation of (deeper) meaning is not inherently more authoritative than that of the reader, in the more common forms of analysis. O...

Yeah, you want magic cameras, you show magic cameras. That's the way it works. I haven't seen anything on this board where it says authors get to dictate what they may or may have not meant when they made a particular piece of fiction. As I understand it's quite the opposite -Gunhead Well you clear...

Dennis Creevy develops his own photos; for all you know he's a photography buff using a 1937 Voigtländer Brillant. If we come down to it, how do we know he didn't just buy a Wizarding camera (with spells replacing the electronic bits) when he was in Diagon Alley buying his books, wand and robes? Th...

How about asking when did the Ministry of Magic decide to adopts cars? Or when the Wizarding World got its own radio network (Wizarding Wireless Network), modern magazines (Witch Weekly), a spell patent system (Horton-Keitch Braking Charm), a number of “learned publications” which it is considered ...
