Re: IMF chief and Sarkozy frontrunner opponent arrested

Well, he's got bail now on a subsequent hearing now. I thought the refusal of bail the first time was on the tough side, since his flight risk isn't that strong with his career on the line, but it wasn't waay out there. Seems like the defense proposed some conditions, makes sense. The prosecutors ar...

Re: 3D Chinese Porn has Bigger Opening Day than Avatar

I just like the fact that they did it. Hong Kong isn't quite the mainland when it comes down to porn, but with half the residents educated in Catholic School and the others trying uphold 'high moral standards' inherited from god knows where, there really needs to be more open discussion of sex out i...

Re: Recommendation request for the PSU experts

Try reading JohnnyGuru, it's a good resource for PSUs. Though I don't really know much about low/mid-range GPUs, though I think the Seasonic fanless is overkill, even the Seasonics with fans are quiet as the fans don't spin up until the power requirements ramp up. Silent PC Review is also good resou...

Re: Earthquake off Japan

The latest Reuters report is 500 missing and 300 dead; unfortunately, with this magnitude and proximity to the coast, my (non-scientific) reflex there will be substantial causalities. My internet also seems to be disrupted, a few cables from Asia-US may be down.

Re: Recommend me a tablet

My view is if you can wait, wait. If you don't like iOS, wait for Honeycomb tablets to come down a little in price, for developers to adapt exsisting more Android apps or make new tablet apps for the layout and overall for the paltform to mature a bit. Should happen in a few months. Also be careful ...

Again? I thought they would have learned from CY Tung's Seawise University. Though technically the problem with that is that it burned down.

Re: E-Readers

K3, Sony PRS-950 and Nook Classic (latest firmware update) all have browser functionality. I use a Nook Color in Hong Kong, a bit of a toy, can't buy off the B&N store without a proxy but I buy books off Kobo, local content using Adobe DRM and DRM-free publications, from whatever stores will sel...

Re: E-Readers

Well, Amazon should have known that profits from hardware sales were going to be squeezed out eventually, since anyone can make an e-ink E-PUB reader with Adobe DRM compatible with the Sony and Kobo stores, and that ecosystem is really quite competitive, as well as the tablets and phones that can al...

Re: I'm looking for a netbook, any help?

They're all about the same if they're 'proper' netbooks, preferably you would go to the store and figure out which has the best ergonomics and build quality. Pay special attention to the input devices too, one reason why the MBA is good to use is that it has a large, responsive trackpad. Eyeball the...

Re: E-Readers

Nook does epub and library books, so you can borrow from a public library using Overdrive. Kindle sounds nice, it's a closed environment but there's a good selection of books and content delivery is convienent, as long as you use their e-reader and phone/tablet/computer apps. Also I get the impressi...

Re: I went to Vegas but all I got was shot in the face (Fall

I have a mod I would like to see, even though I can use other cheats, to alter ability points I like taking small frame because of the number of "Waifish" thief/stealth character females I played in the first two fallout games. It doesn't change the size of my avatar, if I have small fram...

Re: Gunman hijacks tourist bus in Philippines

Eh, emotions are (still) running far too high right now for most people to research the President's track record. At the same time, I wonder if the whole smiling thing is a cultural misunderstanding - the SCMP has quoted Filipino government officials as saying, that's just Aquino's style. That said,...

Re: Gunman hijacks tourist bus in Philippines

Well, even us Chineses here in the Philippines have a lot of unkind words for our fellow countrymen. Chineses are pretty damn discriminating, but very politely and quietly so. Man. Sucks that the Philippines just basically confirmed every bias and stereotype towards crappy S. East Asianers the Chin...

Re: Gunman hijacks tourist bus in Philippines

I'm hearing the local news say that Filipino workers in HK are getting discriminated at. HKers, what's the word on this? Filipino workers have always been discriminated against... not in public of course, but the bias is there. :P  There are good HKers, and then there are bad ones. With regar...

I'm a little puzzled as to why they didn't just tell him, yeah, sure, we see it your way, no worries, you get your job back, come on out and let's nail down the particulars - then just blow his head off when he stepped off the bus. Maybe they tried it and it didn't work... They gave him a letter fr...

Re: Gunman hijacks tourist bus in Philippines

If the police did have better units available, it boggles my mind that they did send them when an international incident was at stake.

The other question is who will make the inquiry. Despite limited knowledge I don't think the local authorities will do a good job from what I've seen so far.

Re: Gunman hijacks tourist bus in Philippines

It's a black travel advisory - no one is being prohibited against going, but it's a strong recommendation against. I do feel it's unnessasary. I do think Donald Tsang is trying to look tough, but I'm not convinced it's justified: “For other Hong Kong citizens still in the Philippines, I hope they ca...

I'll snoop around tomorrow morning to see the reactions. Obviously the black travel advisory only applies to Hong Kong, I haven't heard mainland-side doing anything yet. I don't want get all prissy about the HKer/mainlander divide but it is a real separation of social and governmental systems. Being...

Then again, everyone watched it live and were pretty unhappy with speed of the police response... 7 confirm...

Re: Gunman hijacks tourist bus in Philippines

We've been following it quite closely on this side, it is a Hong Kong tour group and Hong Thai's one of the big tour companies around here. But from TVB/HK Cable, not CNN. The Chinese embassy must have seized on the driver's report by mistake, since they told us 'everyone was dead' just before the h...
