Re: Jon Favreau to write, exec. produce live-action SW
Good worldbuilding is necessary for expanding a setting. I think the sequel trilogy's need of tie-in works are an example of a failure in initial worldbuilding. For something set during the OT, however, I think the requisite skill set isn't worldbuilding so much as it is the ability to match the fee...

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi release thread (spoilers)
Ray, remember that Luke or Han weren't even in the rebellion properly until ESB; Luke was a farmboy who's friend was a starfighter pilot and Han was just a smuggler. Characters starting from low circumstances or status is the essence of Star Wars.

Re: Muggle Technology in Harry Potter
If I recall correctly Hogwarts has an actual Muggle Studies class which even includes a research paper on internet use and other lessons on cutting edge things in Muggle culture. To a degree I am willing to buy that a majority of wizarding society in Britain are ignorant of the wider world because o...

These drones have grasers?
Grasers?!?
I hope these things don't go off in a densely populated area or have a more discriminate weapon. The potential for collateral damage is insane here.

Re: Pizza Drop! (RAR!)
Given that we are making pizzas and not, say, stir-fry or other things reliant on flame-pan contact, I feel like natural gas is a bit over the top. We're working primarily in the environment of a convection oven. The vast majority of common pizza places use electric or gas heated convection ovens wi...

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi release thread (spoilers)
I always assumed the fighters were built in secret factories and the larger ships like the big cruisers were civilian ships that were already in circulation, but with guns and armor plating grafted on. Mainly because photos of Home One showed mismatched colored plates on the hull. It reminds me of ...

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi release thread (spoilers)
If you're also beancounting at TF HQ, one could also argue that for a threat requiring something better than battle droids, they could hire mercenaries to crew the tanks. Also, if better battle droids are developed, the old ones are easily replaced. The latter point is what we see more or less as t...

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi release thread (spoilers)
Given the mercantile nature of the Trade Federation, I would not be at all surprised if the cheaper option involved buying tanks meant to be crewed by organics and then programming the droids to operate them. By the time the Clone Wars are in full swing, however, the various CIS powers clearly saw a...

Try to use it to spread a generally higher-than-average level of collective empathy and critical thinking I guess? Also look into extremely precise forms of communication. Trolling with this wouldn't even be fun. You're not going to get genuine reactions out of it, not really, unless this is at will...

I've been wondering, fractal, just how you create such incredible detail.
Is each part done by hand, placed pre-made, some combination? You put an amazing amount of effort into these.

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi release thread (spoilers)
I don't think Phasma is dead, the star wars wiki just states she "fell into a fire" which leads me to believe that the script doesn't say if she dies. But whether she is dead or not, she has been a wasted opportunity from the start. Even if she comes back in Ep 9, for this to follow a tril...

Who knows, just because its weapons systems can funnel sun-energy (and it looks like a lot of that tech was used to literally channel and propel the sun-matter), doesn't necessarily mean its defense systems can totally harness that stuff. Just because the Hoover Dam can harness water doesn't mean i...

Re: MORE Conversations From the Professional Front Lines
When I was in high school this was actually a topic of discussion with my drafting/machining instructor. According to him, some of the early steel boots had toe guards with convex top ends, so the tip would bend inward from large force. Now they are built with concave ends that go down to the sole p...

On the TIE bomber there are also two visible weapon ports, one forward and a downwards chute. Presumably it can carry payloads suited to either one or to both, giving it a wide range of engagement options.

Yeah, I expect that. What I'm wondering mostly is if they're carrying over grouped things or more just picking bits to carry over that they feel work. I.e. if they carry over A, B, and C can we expect the related X, Y, and Z, or is it more exclusive.

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi release thread (spoilers)
I don't mind the concept so much as the way it was executed. I found the execution very lacking and thus I was not well convinced by the concept. Frankly when I watched both TFA and TLJ I felt very outpaced by them and it was difficult at times to really figure out why the movie was doing what it wa...

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi release thread (spoilers)
That's very interesting. Would be interesting to see them in the new films as well. Possibly in the off-sequence ones (spin-off-esque films like Rogue one)? Does kind of muddle the waters for how much of the old EU was carried over versus how much is straight gone or is present but in a different way.

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi release thread (spoilers)
I don't personally think whatever applied to Starkiller Base would apply to Supremacy. The difference in size is massive. That's all fine and dandy. I was responding to Q99, who did imply that the shield systems of the Supremacy and Starkiller Base were similar. The treatment of the Force in TFA an...

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi release thread (spoilers)
Ghetto edit: I don't see how what happened with the Malevolence changes anything with the hyperspace ram. In ANH Han implies that collisions are possible with celestial objects while in hyperspace. What we don't see at all in the OT or the PT is any evidence that hyperspace ramming is useful in comb...

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi release thread (spoilers)
Why does it need to be typical of all "large" shields? The shield protecting Starkiller Base is far larger than that protecting the Death Star. Oh, and another way to reconcile the Kamikaze cruiser- TFA established that shields on super large things don't work on FTL incoming ships, and e...

Oh, and another way to reconcile the Kamikaze cruiser- TFA established that shields on super large things don't work on FTL incoming ships, and even so, it was inaccurate enough that it didn't even hit the Supremacy very centered. If the method has a 10+ kilometer error bars and only some shield ty...

Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi release thread (spoilers)
One thing I would note: Even in the prequels, the forces being mobilized in secret had a basis for it, in two forms: First, the groups mobilizing them are described as being powerful. The separatist factions are given to represent a significant portion of the galaxy's industrial and economic power, ...
