Re: Will Trump end up as a 'secondary' president to the GOP?

the conventional interpretation of Presidential pardon powers has always been that it's only valid for Federal crimes The list of words that have been used to describe Donald Trump is very, very long. I don't think "conventional" is one that's ever made that list. Is there any explicit st...

Re: COVID-19 ongoing thread part 2

Can the USA do snap elections the way the UK could? I'm not sure, but I don't think so - the impression I get of their entire system is that it's designed to break rather than bend. AFAIK that will only happen if it happens after they are inaugurated. If they die after the election but before confi...

The most interesting scenario but most ghoulish is that Trump and Pence both catch the disease, win re-election but then both pass on after November 4th. In that case it would be Speaker Pelosi would be president and depending on when they die the 12th Amendment says the House of Representatives mus...

Another datapoint for pre-industrial infantry - the Numenoreans. Their average height was something over 6' 4", with the tallest known individual being almost 8', and (as Gunhead notes the importance of endurance) capable of long marches with full kit (about 25 miles a day normally, 35+ forced).

DITL is also very good, as both a source of canon data and ideas. GK made a point of clearly distinguishing between what came from the screen, the books, and his own fanfic backstories.

So hypothetically if WW1 had not happened then the Germany could possibly have achieved the OP hypothetical order of battle but wartime priorities and events severely curtailed this outcome. Even then, i assume the British would still have more ships in service. Vastly more, especially since the 41...

There wasn't - it's the closest concept I could come up with combining huge range, the ability to land and take off from pretty much anywhere, decent tactical performance against a dedicated short-range interceptor, and significant ground-attack capability.

Again though, those still have "terrain" of a sort - think of it as "anything that constrains the battle area" rather than geographic features. So - the convoy escort actions, or the Glorious First of June (which, in fairness, had slipped my mind) still had something that made t...

Re: What would a realistic spaceship chase look like?

Do escorts fighting off submarines in the Atlantic count because there was a whole part of both World Wars just about battles taking place as far away from other fleets and defences as possible. There was also the Glorious First of June - a French Revolutionary War fleet action fought over a convoy.

Re: Cost and Economics of the TIE Fighter and Hyperdrives

Honestly I think Shep is somewhat on the right track for the cost analysis, but of course we have to look at if the TIE fighters even needed hyperdrives for what they were intended to be. They weren't long-range strike craft, they were local patrol craft always assumed to have a base or ship nearby...

Maybe the "one in a million" Holdo maneuver requires Force-sensitivity, just like Luke's kill shot against the Death Star did (another "one in a million" shot, according to Han). Yes, that would mean Holdo herself may have been Force-sensitive and simply never received any Jedi ...
