Re: Reports of the death of racism have been greatly exaggerated
1. Minority groups would be represented regardless of whether AA exists or not--they would just be less represented if there weren't a policy of intentionally representing them over and above what would be justifiable given their qualifications. I'm sorry but they cannot be that unqualified or they...

Re: Reports of the death of racism have been greatly exaggerated
I'm done with the round and round bit. I'm going to make it short, simple, and to the point, I don't have the desire to nitpick at irrelevancies or address strawmen. And I'm sure, conversely, you feel the same MoO. Minority representation has risen over the past few decades. We can all see it statis...

Re: Reports of the death of racism have been greatly exaggerated
Fuck you. The burden of proof isn't on me in the first place (it's on YOU to prove that affirmative action effectively redresses racism), but in what sense did the study that I presented prove unsatisfactory? Except you're the one that stated the opening claim back on the first page. You stated tha...

Re: Reports of the death of racism have been greatly exaggerated
Prove to me that affirmative action is actually harming minorities. So far you've posted something that doesn't apparently do it. Oh, I see: so you think that we SHOULD make sure that 60% of college graduates are women because at some time in the past they've been oppressed in... non-academic areas....

Re: Reports of the death of racism have been greatly exaggerated
So? Many, many people meet the "minimum qualifications needed" to get hired at a major law firm--that just entails passing the Bar exam. Only a very few can be successful at major law firms because that is a far more exacting standard (less than 100% of the people who pass Bar exams will ...

Re: Reports of the death of racism have been greatly exaggerated
I have to disagree wrt MoO's post. We're discussing the topic in one of my classes, and the important thing to remember is that affirmative action does not negate that you must have a minimum level of competancy in a field. You're not going to get hired because just because you're a minority. You're...

Re: CNN: 5 reasons GOP will rebound
I read the last part of Kendall's statement wrt the 29% as overall taxation, not just provincial taxation. If that was not the intention, then sorry for the confusion on my behalf. I think that's partially my fault, if you follow the link I posted you'll see that our Federal tax has multiple levels...

Re: CNN: 5 reasons GOP will rebound
What makes you think Canadians do not also have multiple levels of tax? I never said that Canadians, or others in general, don't. I'm saying that Shep is only posting part of the overall taxation in his comparison between CA and MD, so people looking at that piece and then declaring taxes as low ar...

Re: CNN: 5 reasons GOP will rebound
Call me crazy but it doesn't seem that Americans have high taxes at all. I'm not sure what they pay Federally but for the bracket my folks are in, their at 29%. Shep is only using part of the total taxation. I live in CA myself and combined (state, Fed, etc) my total taxes are probably about 25-30%...

Re: Maine Legis. passes Marriage Equality, other Marriage News
Honestly, I'm both slightly amused and rather annoyed by the fact that the right has the audacity (and hypocrisy) to bitch, moan, and complain about "emotions" and "money" when it's exactly both those things that they used in California to pass Prop 8. Misleading and emotionally ...

Okay, so I'm kinda lame. Between overtime at work and papers at school, I've gotten a grand total of one chapter finished at this time. However, I wanted to at least post something cause my contribution to date has been lacking. I'll try to get through the other chapters faster...I didn't realize ho...

Re: Texas tries Secessionism 2.0: Seeks to null Fed. laws.
I'm sorry, I don't really understand what the hell Texas's problem is as of late. Granted, between work and school I'm probably not the most up to date wrt current events, but I don't see how things have so completely changed in the few months of Obama's presidency that Texas is shitting over. I hon...

Re: Jackie Chan's China comments prompt backlash
I'm honestly not seeing how Chan's comments were racist. Maybe the article simply isn't providing enough context, but all Chan seems to say is that an authoritarian gov't is good for China. Which there is, run by Chinese . I don't think that the comment means the way it's interpreted here. From how...

Re: Angry Luddites attack Google Street View car
I guess I don't really get the issue about having my residence photographed. I personally think that Street View is a great idea. I like to be able to see the place(s) that I'm going to, and hell, I've even used it to direct people. "You see that commercial building with two stories and the pil...

Re: Time Warner's bandwidth quota scheme
How is cable TV transmitted? I always thought it was a broadcast over the wire that the cable box filtered out to the channel you want; all the channels were coming down the wire anyway, so if you watch or not doesn't really matter. I thought it was similar to SGN posted, but I may be mistaken. It ...

Re: Time Warner's bandwidth quota scheme
30+ GB/month is actually 4-5 NetFlix Watch Instantly movies, not counting any other traffic during the month at all. Each is approximately 6-8 GB of data. I think a typical family's viewing habits might include "1 movie a week," which is easily in excess of half of the caps listed above. ...

Re: Time Warner's bandwidth quota scheme
I think another one of my issues with the whole thing is a point I've seen raised elsewhere. It seems a bit odd to complain loudly and often about people stressing out their internet services, but they also have cable including HD for a flat rate that you can leave on 24/7 with no issues. Further, (...

Re: Time Warner's bandwidth quota scheme
It's likely that some of the DSL companies will use this to their advantage, imho. Yes, DSL is typically slower than cable connections, but there are plenty of people that will deal with a slower connection to avoid overage fees. I have Time Warner whereas my friend has DSL, and we both play on the ...

I figured that they were going for the religious angle with that scene too, but it really still just came off as cringe inducing and didn't work that well at all. See, I'm going to be the exception to the rule here. For some reason I found it oddly beautiful. I can't put my finger on exactly what i...

Let me know how you like SR2. I got it as a present but haven't started playing it yet. I liked the first one well enough, but I quit playing cause the plane mission (with enemy rocker launchers out the ass) kept pissing me off.

-Since the train-wreck is almost over, it may be of little value to point out continued Adama's lack of consistency to the very end. He declares there will be no rescue mission, then of course, does a complete 180 and decides there will be. An entire episode of fluff and filler when the onl...

Further on next week's episode, wouldn't it be a riot if Starbuck's arrival on Earth via time travel had actually somehow caused the holocaust that had destroyed civilization? It'd fit well with her Harbinger of Doom™ role. Ohhh....I like it. I really fucking like it. It's so wrong and so right at ...
