Fundies, Aliens and God's Will
Anyone have any idea or been privy to discussions amongst fundies on how exactly they will deal with aliens if they should ever come down and visit or make contact. Especially aliens obviously superior to us technically that treat religion they way we treat mental illness. Say they are apalled that we still have religious beliefs that in theior way of thinking is only one step removed from a tribal shaman's way of life.
How would they work these aliens into their world view and justify their superior existance as non believers. And not just Christians mind you, but Islamic fundies and their love affair with all things 13th century.

Re: Fundies, Aliens and God's Will
Well, considering the aliens correctly percieve religion/fundies as a mental illness, perhaps they'll provide us with a much needed cure. Then we don't need to worry about how they'll spin docter their beliefs to encompass the new reality.Stravo wrote:Anyone have any idea or been privy to discussions amongst fundies on how exactly they will deal with aliens if they should ever come down and visit or make contact. They would treat them the same way they treat modern scientists who don't think the Bible is true; as either agents of Satan or poor, deluded fools. Then they'd pass a bunch of laws to make sure the aliens can't influence our society.

It will be all part of a conspiracy from the evil secular government.

Seriously, I've heard fundie preachers describing how the government has plans for a massive projection in the sky as some kind of 'false Christ' or some such crap.

I seem to remember reading that the RC Church is planning on converting sentient aliens when/if they are found. Can anyone confirm/debunk this?
Anyway: I agree that the fundies will see the aliens as agents of Satan. I'm not sure if they will brand them heathens in need of conversion or out-and-out demons in need of extermination, though. If it's the latter, it might make things messy.

I seriously doubt there are such discussions among fundies.Stravo wrote:...discussions amongst fundies on how exactly they will deal with aliens if they should ever come down and visit or make contact. I mean, [fundie] if God even created any "Aliens", they would definitely be devout Christians, like us [/fundie].
That said, if it actually happens...
...fundies are unpredictable. I won't be surprised about anything.

Re: Fundies, Aliens and God's Will
I actually had a similar discussion with a fundie once. His response was that if there are other intelligent beings out there, they would be just like us, since we're all in God's image.AMX wrote:I seriously doubt there are such discussions among fundies.

Here's an idea, why not get the fundies to fund the space program from now on. Wouldn't life on another planet identical to ours really help their anti-evolution crusade? They're soooo certain they're right afterall.

If aliens that technologically advanced arrived on Earth, why would they even care about the various religions that have sprouted here? Maybe they have their own religions that they'll try to force upon humanity... maybe they don't give a rats ass...

I would imagine that if an advanced species tried to make contact with us that it would be a scientific expedition with their version of socialologist who would try to exmamine human society and history.SancheztheWhaler wrote:If aliens that technologically advanced arrived on Earth, why would they even care about the various religions that have sprouted here? Shit, even I don't want most of our women, just a select few. They can take all of the ones with mustaches and hairy asses.

Another was Childhood's End by Arthur C Clarke. The aliens who were dubbed "Overlords" by humanity arrived and took control of pre-starflight Earth. They were dead ringers for mediaevel devils.Nieztchean Uber-Amoeba wrote:I remember a book I readwhere Humanity found a species of aliens which looked somewhat like the mediaevel concept of devils, and some jesuits proclaimed them to be the servants of Satan...

I asked fundies about this before but never got an answer until now. The universe is one very fucking enormous place. The known universe is something like twelve billion light years in radius, and that's all that we can see. There's MORE out there that's so far away that we can't even see it. Do they even REALIZE how huge the universe is? And it's all just there to be destroyed because some hairless apes with large brains on one infinetsimally tiny mostly water-covered rock are special?Fundie Moron wrote:Furthermore, the Bible clearly indicates that the fate of the universe (every other planet and star) is forever linked to God's timetable for mankind and the Earth. One day, Christ will return to Earth and complete the final act of man's redemption (2 Peter 3:9-10). He will destroy this present universe and create a new heavens and Earth (2 Peter 3:7,10; Revelations 21:1). All the stars and planets will be destroyed, along with the Earth.

The especially amusing thing is that the Bible does in fact repeatedly mention sentient creatures other than angels and people.Mayabird wrote:

I would like to see them backtrack on the issue if intelligent life is indeed found. Most likely they will deny the intelligence of the aliens or claim that they don't count because "they have no soul".What bearing does this have on the question of extraterrestrial life? The timetable (and the whole reason) for this destruction and re-creation clearly seems to be based on God's plan for us Earthlings. If God had created intelligent life on other worlds, it is hard to imagine that their lives would be calibrated by the failures of Earth's inhabitants. It seems unlikely and unfair that their distant planets would be destroyed by God because of His plan for Earth. The implication of Scripture is that there are no other intelligent beings besides man, animals, and the angels.

i saw an episode of southpark last friday that summed up their response:
(tv preacher)
"ok, see hmm, we've just learned that there are aliens on the planet beta zeta in the omicron galaxy who haven't been saved by jesus yet, so what we need now is a ship with a reactionless warp drive, not just any warp drive mind you, but a *reactionless* warp drive"
(fundies start sending in money)
anyway the entire episode was pretty hilarious with the fundies in their spaceship with a big cross on it's side shooting at the kids's alien spaceship and the aliens who refer to everything as marklar. one quip at the end was particularly brilliant in my view:
fundies: (after the aliens said they're sending them home)
but don't you understand that you will burn for eternity hell?!
aliens: that's nice.

Any contact with an alien intelligence is unlikely to be as direct as a spaceship landing on the White House, and will probably be radio signals etc. detected by SETI. Then, it will be easy for them to carry on with the old 'sticking fingers in ears and singing 'Amazing Grace' ' act that they've been doing with evolution and most of science.
