The Armageddon topic and some of the people within.

Post by Ghost Rider »

Usually I let fanfic go on it happy way, because let us be honest...it's the LAST place we usually see conflict or debates in any sort except on writing styles or ideas.

In Stuart's very large story we have at lest two and I suspect more shit stirring cowards who basically hide there.

Also this is another sympton of the whole internet tough guy, and honestly, I am looking into the topic, but it is 100+ pages, and to say it's unweildly is an understatment.

Ender brought up Ed Beccarra in Buddaha's topic and I wonder, is there any others I should keep an eye out for?

Lock the thread and have Stuart start another one. That's my advice, it'll just make moderating so much easier for you guys.

Ed Becerra was apparently brought over here from SB.com by the debates there over the story.

Another comment is that the Fanfic board, particularly with the traffic that Armageddon and its sequels will be generating for years to come, desperately needs a moderator more active than Stravo, who is basically never here anymore. Fanfic is a board where we don't need to worry about any of the opinions on testing or the N&P fiasco, just need someone competent, who cares about writing and respects authors, who can bash around the internet tough guy acts, lock threads when they get to long to moderate, and deal with whiners who try to turn fanfiction into something to debate (truly the most ridiculous thing ever).

The fanfic forum, as it stands, basically has no moderatorial oversight directly assigned to it, and it could certainly benefit from an active moderator again.

We could use a second Fanfic moderator since Stravo reduced his activity but who? We need a second Stravo, part Critic Part, Editor, Part Fanfic fan.

But who?
I don't say that jokingly, I can't think of anyone. Stuart's an obvious choice but faces the same time constraint that Stravo did. The only other person who comes to mind is Sonnenburg but faces the same time constraint... I think.

S'pity Mike January never came to SD.net, he'd be perfect for the role. Stuart is already admin of another board and is a pretty busy man in real life on top of it, so I doubt we could impose on him so and expect him to keep writing, too. Of the Great Fanfic Authors that leaves, uhm, Shep and Me.

Yeah. Definitely a problem.

I'd mention Steve, except he's intermittently homeless at the moment and may not have reliable internet, which kinda defeats the purpose, though otherwise he'd also be perfect for it.

I could do it. I don't see why one needs to be a fanfic author specifically to moderate Fanfic.

I think some experience with Fanfics would be desirable, but I don't think one has to have a vast portfolio of stories under one's belt to qualify. To my knowledge, you do have a few fics to your name.

Red Imp for fanfic boss!
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

If all you want to do is have some harmless, mindless fun, go H3RE INST3ADZ0RZ!!

One complete novel-length original fic (now down because I'm editing it), one original fic which petered out in chapter 1, and a Voyager rewrite that I pinky swear I'm going to restart someday.

Go for it Red.

As for Stravo, lot of personal concerns has made it harder for him to poke his head in, let alone moderate.

Heh, I didn't mention you because I figured you were already too busy.

Well since the Senate has no power over mod selection I would recommend the mods figure it amongst themselves and get the admins to change things up. We could do a sense fo the senate resolution but I don't think its really that neccessary.

RI is a supermoderator so he already has the authority to do so.

The Armageddon fic thread should be locked and continued in a second thread just because of its size. Threads in excess of 50 pages start doing all kinds of interesting things due to how much shit they need to load from the database and may actually end up corrupted beyond recovery if shit hits the fan. They are also impossible to moderate.

Slightly off-topic, but I always wondered what was with phpBB's architecture that made large topics problematic.

Don't ask me. I'm taking Mike's word for it, he's the one who said that sometime in the mod forum.

For one thing, when you try to split posts out of a thread, the software loads every post in that thread in a single screen. At 50 pages, that 1250 posts it's trying to load all at once. I would imagine the server isn't happy about that--I know my computer isn't when I've tried in the past.

True but none of us in the Senate (or rather acting as senators) have the authority as all modding decisions are made without the advice and consent of the Seante, we are purely advisory in that role. As such while I think bringin it up in the Senate is worthwhile this is a matter that the mods/admins need to take care of. Not saying they aren't just saying we can't.
