WTF is it with SB.com?

I am a regular at SpaceBattles.com, although in truth the only place I ever really go to is the Story Debate (STGOD) section. I've participated in a lot of long-running STGODs there, the longest one being the Star Wars storyline that is in its 4th year now.
But it seems like every so often, say once every 4-6 months, the whole board just goes to shit. I'm not talking about trolls or board invasions, I mean you can't even get on the damn board at all, or if you can, it locks up, crashes, or just goes all epic-fail on us.
It started doing that today again; I haven't even been able to make a connection. I can access any other board or website just fine from both my work and home computers, but any attempt to get onto SB meets with a blank screen and a "connection refused" or "cannot locate server" message.
Is there something about the BBS software (kierbbs?) that is just fucked up? There's a lot of other SB-ers here, does anyone here know anything about why they constantly have down cycles like this?

Maybe they used up all their bandwidth?

I think it's just a shitty server.
IIRC they're looking for a new one.
I just think of it as a monthly tradition.
Sorta like the thread matching Star Wars against some opponent that ridiculously outclasses it so the whiny trektards can jerk off to SW getting its ass kicked, or the Inevitable ICS thread involving the same two people.

Kierbbs? I thought they were on vBulletin, and one of the admins also happened to be one of the vB developers.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one with those problems at the moment. But yeah, it's been getting worse, and there is talk of setting up a donation drive or a paid membership to pay for a better server. At least then we would get the search function back, because that database became so big it crashed the board something fierce a month ago.
If any of those donation drives or paid memberships happens will be up to Kier, who is ultimately the one to make those descisions.

I can remember quite recently, a few months ago, that Spacebattles.com was out of action for an entire day.

That would be when they had to take down the built in search function to keep the server afloat.

It breaks a fair bit because the users are so right wing the server falls off the shelf.
Seriously, the server's just shit and needs replacing.
Also, I am banned from there. Again. Haaa.

Ignoring some dumb mod who told me not to post for some reason. Probably something to do with trying to enforce niceness in the politics (well, I say politics, more like what from the Daily Mail or wingnutdaily can Senmut post about Obama next) subforum. Who cares? I'm not sure how nice I'm meant to be to people who tell me racism is not allied with the right wing in American politics, evidently it must've been more nice than I was being.

Wow, getting banned from there is quite an accomplishment, short of being particularly annoying to one of the NSF mods.
But don't worry. Even if it's a permban, four months from now someone will be looking over the permban list, see your name, and figure you were improperly permbanned and unban you.
....you all can probably tell I'm a bit jaded when it comes to SB administration, right?

The board hasn't been functional for a good few days now, god knows what's wrong.

Oh, you were banned in that case because you entered a thread and starting posting your usual anti-religion topics on a thread that was totally unrelated to that.
And before you accuse me of being a bible basher, I'm far from it, I'm an athiest, but you did try to veer the thread that you were in off topic.

Hey all. I spotted this thread and just had to drop in for a quick post or two.
I was recently banned from SB.com as well. I called Orson Scott Card a Lunatic and a mod warned me to stop posting Ad Hominens. I defended my statement and ignored the mod. I was consequently banned for a month. This was reduced to a week by other mods. Most mods agreed that the warning was bullshit, but it seems that its against the rules to ignore a mods warning even when its bullshit. The staff said I needed to be banned for ignoring the warning regardless of the legitimacy. Fuck Spacebattles. I have given a great deal of my time to that board. More then 8 years on that board. Now its nothing but a cesspit. The moderators refuse to punish the problem members while bitching about them, then they bludgeon the productive members with the rules and drive them away with indifference.
Thanatos, you can fucking kiss my ass. I was right and you fucking know it.

No, that was a different thread and that was to put EmpSolo in his place instead of letting him continue his "I have hero morality" self aggrandisement. The second post in that thread had nothing to do with religion and was, in fact, in agreement with Solo (as was the first post) about stalinist atrocities against Squishy's apologetics.

Was it a permban or just one of their usual "slap on the wrist" temp bans?

Whose?
Zuul/Rye was a temp ban, can't remember the duration.
Alyeska was a month reduced to a week.

Rofl, my ban was because someone had posted from a library I had posted from at some time and then went and pissed off Thanatos. No warning sockpuppet ban that lasted until I was finally able to get through to someone who took the time to look into it.

Same thing's been happening to me. I'm pretty sure it's the server again.

Yeah, it took me all of 5 minutes there to realize I wanted nothing to do with the Politics or any other part of the board. I play in the fiction section entirely. I have almost 2,000+ posts there, and all but maybe 10 of them are in the STGODs forum.

I like posting all my bizzaro Vs' ideas in there. I feel like I have the freedom to let less constructed ideas flow, alowing more of a discussion than a debate I suppose. I do that here sometimes, but there seems to be more users familiar with many of the games I use in my VS' in Sb.com, that and there seem to be a few venues I suppose I find more entertaining than here.

Why would a vBulletin software developer have such problems maintaining a reliable server? You'd think such a person would be unusually capable of handling such a task. And computers don't exactly cost a fortune nowadays; you can get a really fast machine for under a grand.
As for the actual content of sb.com and its absurd attitude, it's always been like that. I don't know why anybody even feels the need to say it.

He apparently doesn't really want to fully administer a server himself and is looking more into hosted services, which'd cost a fair amount of money per month.
