In this scenario, each active member of SD.net (50+ posts) (along with any spouces they might have) find themselves transported by Q to a strange spacecraft. One of a large fleet of which is in orbit over the dark side of the moon.

The Ships: The basic spacecraft is 150 meters long, (for the most part) 12 meters in diameter and is divided into three sections, pressure hull, engineering and the secondary area.

The pressure hull is for you and your crew live in. Here are the controls, quarters, life support and recreational facilities. The basic model has the following systems...

• Hull: Ceramic/metallic Designed to resist radiation and micrometeors and reflect heat. It can not survive entering earth's atmosphere.
• Manoeuvring Thrusters: Sixteen of them arranged in four clusters of four along the hull
• Bridge: Located under a polarized transparent hemisphere 5 meters in diameter (with a retractable shield). Here is the Captain’s, Helmsman’s, Sensor Officer’s and First Officer’s stations.
• Corridors: General tubes and rings for getting around the spacecraft.
• Sickbay: Well equiped and stocked, with enough medicine to keep you in proper health if you have special needs. Each ship has a trained doctor able to handle your needs.
• Emergency Packs: A few emergency packages are about, these have emergency air supplies and patches in case of hull breech.
• Storage: There are some Cargo Holds, mostly for supplies
• Sensor towers. Two 5 meter towers near the front of the ship with radar, lidar and a pair of 50cm telescopes.
• Quarters: The Base model has quarters at the core of the ship, this includes the Captain’s quarters, a 90 degree segment 5 meters in radius and 3 meters tall. This comes with a zero G bed, sink, lavatory, television, shelves, gaming systems and a computer. The rest of the crew sleep in small chambers similar to Capsule Hotel rooms. Beneath it is the Recreation room, which is a common recreational area for the crew with a few treadmills and other exercise machines as well as large screen TVs. The ships computers have an extensive library of music, films, TV shows and Games. Ships with larger crews have more space to accommodate them.
• Docking: two retractable universal docking births are installed to either side, these can lock onto any existing earth spacecraft and extend up to 5 meters, as well as serving as airlocks. Each crew member has their own mechanical pressure spacesuit with manoeuvring thrusters.
• Life Support/Food Production: Long story short, each ship is fully capable of recycling its air, water and material to keep its crew fed and breathing. In case of food, it comes in the form of a Hydroponic Garden. This produces algae, vegetables, soybeans, tea and there are a set of tubes which grow culture meat, as well as being able to create sugar, hot sauce and salt synthetically. On the basic unit, this is enough to feed seventeen people comfortably. Food is prepared in the ship’s galley. If you must, a culture of Brewer’s yeast is available and your crew does know how to make a still. Fabric is also produced here, as are some basic plastic items.

Engineering is where the Fusion Drive is located, as well as the fuel tanks, a few spare parts and the Radiator Array (retractable). Their fuel tanks hold 1,000,000 liters of Deuterium and Tritium for fuel. The ship has a maximum acceleration of 1G (general acceleration is 0.5G) and generally cruise at speeds of 200km/s.

This is of course, only for the basic model. In addition, there are six variants designed to do various tasks. You can choose what type of ship you have.

• CARGO: Your ship has cargo capacity; it has thirty two cargo modules along its side as well as a loading arm. These are not pressurized. The rated maximum transit capacity of which is 4,000 tonnes. Has a crew of sixteen.
• HABITAT: The habitat ship has a ring shaped rotating section and extended life support and agricultural capacities which allows for the accommodation of up to 150 passengers in 0.3G gravity. Has a crew of 20.
• FACTORY: Factory are mobile factories and have crews of 64. The additional crewmembers are engineers and robotics technicians and overseers. These ships have systems process metal and ceramics into additional things. These include space station components, habitats for planetary development, industrial equipment, scaffolding and indeed, more spaceships. That said, they cannot work without raw materials and while they can assemble large scale things and have limited transport capacity.
• MINING: Mining ships are ore processing stations. They have a set of shock absorbers near the fusion drive and tether launchers allowing it to safely touchdown engine first onto an asteroid and then deploy three dump truck sized vehicles called grinders. Grinders will then chew up material, put into boxes which are then picked up and taken into the refinery. It can process most materials, from fuel to metal and ceramics. That said, it has minimal transport capacity and cannot produce much besides simple ingots or deuterium. Has a crew of 24.
• EVA CARRIER: The EVA Carrier has external racks, two manipulator arms and a crew of 42. It has a complement of sixteen manipulators. These are low range craft maneuver and have a pair of arms that can be fitted with a number of graspers, welders and bolt drivers. These can be used to assemble components provided by factory ships. They can build shipyards and space stations.
• DROP CARRIER: Drop Carriers are very similar to EVA Carriers in design. Their difference is in their payload, they carry two shuttles and two Landers. Shuttles are triangular jet assisted spacecraft capable of escaping earth’s gravity with four tonnes of cargo or 16 tonnes. Landers are heavier purpose craft designed to touchdown on objects comparable in size to mars. They can land and unload up to 50 tonnes of cargo and lift off from the lunar surface with a similar payload. Has a crew of 26.

Working together and with a supply of raw materials a Factory ship, a Mining Ship and an EVA carrier could mine enough ore, fabricate components and scaffolding and complete a new ship in eighteen months. Six ships (Two of Each) can do the same job in 9 months, nine (three of each) can do it in six. Also, a critical fact: NONE OF THESE SPACECRAFT ARE ARMED. They also have a safety program installed to make sure that they can not fire their thrusters to damage any other ship in the fleet, parasites or the fuel depot.

The Fuel Depot-A large orbiting fuel tank, has 5,000,000 tonnes of Deuterium/Tritium and 200 docking stations in lunar orbit. It is entirely automated.

The Crew: In terms of qualifications to run the ship, they are more than capable, but there is some subtle diference. Since these spacecraft for the most part don’t have artificial gravity, the crew is adapted to thrive in its absence. They are Zero Gravers.

Image

Zero Gravers (Homo Cosmicus) are humans adapted to live their lives in Zero Gravity. They have better resistance to radiation and feel perfectly comfortable in freefall. They can get about when gravity or effective gravity is present, but they are awkward in it. They typically tend to be very detail oriented, obsessive and good at math. Your crew is loyal to you so long as you don't try to kill them. Each ship has a a 50/50 male female split. One per ship is a capable teacher on top of their ususal skills. Zero Gravers are not uniform, Black, Asian and Caucasian Zerp Gravers exist. They all speak with thick Australian accents and while they don't hold it against normal people, they see baseline humans as being very weird looking, what with their deformed lower hands, beady little eyes and body hair.

So what happens and what do you do?

So wait. We just get transported onto these craft and than what? Do we just get to be a part of the crew?

He specifically said that the crew is loyal to you and that the ship is yours, so long as you don't do anything that would incite the crew to mutiny. Like trying to get them killed, for the lulz.

Oh, I missed that part. Now to determine which one of these can best be used for independent operations.

To better judge were sounds come from. They usually work in a much more 3D enviroment.

Their faces should be parabolic dish-shaped, with one ear higher than the other, giving them owl faces. Hoot hoot!

The feathers will also insulate them from the coldness of spess. Beaks can eat space food more efficiently than teeth, and will have less risk of teeth floating around loosely in case of zero gravity gingivitis.

Why do their ankles bend backwards for their hand-feet? If the analogy is to the human wrist, the wrist doesn't bend that way relative to the elbow, so why should their ankle bend that way relative to the knee?

Why does the woman have hair, and the man doesn't? Is hair a good idea for these people, since theoretically they're some kind of genetically optimized beings who are created without regard for appearance?

Whose ships have the medical specialists who understand weird spacemonkey people physiology in enough detail to perform complex surgeries and medical treatments on them?

Molted feathers would get everywere and make a mess. Beaks would mean more stuff would get out of their mouths (having no lips to hold stuff in) and they could not chew.

They are quite flexible, the hair on females does not get much longer than that, and the doctors are well versed in Zero Graver and baseline anatomy.

So out of every 20-40 of these guys, one doctor per ship is qualified not just to act as a general practitioner for the zero-g dudes' medical needs, but also to do all sorts of specialty medicine? Remember, they'll need their own set of orthopedic specialists, cardiovascular specialists, possibly brain surgeons if their brains are wired differently...

Those are some smart doctors if they have all that in one head.

Their are some specialists on Factory ships, Mining Ships and Habitat Ships, but each ship's crew has a being that is at least a capable rated General Practitioner on both at least.

Ah, well, to address the question posed in the RAR... I dunno, I'm having trouble deciding. I guess I'd lean towards mining, because then I mostly deal with problem solving like "how do I safely mine this rock", rather than complaining passengers or 3D design/construction (because I'm not great spatially.)

So, ah, park on a nearby NEO in a stable-ish orbit and start cranking ingots?

Bring down 16 tonnes or 4 tonnes up.

I try to fly my spaceship home. If I can't, I get really depressed at being separated from my friends and family and society to forever cruise around in a tin can full of monkeypeople with handfeet. Eventually I shoot myself or something.

Aha, instead of feathers they can get scales then, and their parabolic dish-faces will be partly done with a lizard frill. The act of molting off scales wholesale makes it neither as messy as feathers nor constantly-shedding skin. Their spacefood might not have to be chewed, or they eat food like owls or snakes by swallowing them whole - with or without the dislocation of the jaws. Owl-like poops will be more manageable due to their compactness too.

My space crew will not be elves, but will be lizard-frilled reptilio-owls. Hoot-hoot!

In your search for Earth, the 13th colony, you have to pass through Bakustra's Casino Planet. And I guess the gambling saves you from suicidal depression by giving you gambling addiction and alcoholism or something.

Since this is post-transhumanist post-hard post-science post-fiction, your booze will have carbon buckyball nanotubules in them that your prefabricated designer organ iLiver will have to filter, and eventually you'll have to get an iLiver fuel filter replacement or planned obsolescence forces you to buy a fancier hipper trendier cooler new iLiver with new apps one year later. God help you if they issue a factory recall while you're in spess. The gambling will be done via virtual reality through neural net cables stuck into your nostrils, linking you to an antenna that communicates to other gambling addicts in the Orion's Arm by creating miniature wormholes to beam neutrino tachyon transmissions through in a very realistic fashion to render in glourious 4-dimension a bingo table full of moldy old people who've lived for five centuries and yet have grafted slabs of cyberprosthetic young-skin onto their faces to look not-old. The guys who lose in the gambling, and who betted their anti-aging implants, end up giving these up and devolve into wrinkled prune people and since they're broke, the only cosmetic surgerization they can afford will be futuristic wrinkle-stretching services akin to what those guys used in Star Trek: Insurrection.

A British tar is a soaring soul
As free as a mountain bird
His energetic fist should be ready to resist
A dictatorial word
His nose should pant and his lip should curl
His cheeks should flame and his brow should furl
His bosom should heave and his heart should glow
And his fist be ever ready for a knock-down blow

His eyes should flash with an inborn fire
His brow with scorn be wrung
He never should bow down to a domineering frown
Or the tang of a tyrant tongue
His foot should stamp and his throat should growl
His hair should curl and his face should scowl
His eyes should flash and his breast protrude
And this should be his customary attitude

How do these things breed? Are they compatible with us? And how long do they gestate and take to mature? In other words, how long does it take me to replace a lost crew member?

Also, do they have any weapons or at least the skill and equipment to manufacture any?

Like any other mammal (though with a few less complications that Baselines), no, and as long as H. Sapians Sapians.

Quote:

Besides a couple of Ceramic knives that are officially to cut loose material, no there are no weapons. The ships are unarmed and none of the factory ships have blueprints for weapons onhand, though they can accept new blueprints. There are blueprints for an specialized high power laser welder that can fire 250 kj pulses at 1.5 second intervals (with can accept 0.5 kilo compact energy cells good for 40 of such pulses) which weighs about 4 kilograms which is compatable with a modular power drill base on file onboard factory ships.

I encase Sauron's ring in a 4 ton block of steel and when I orbit Mordor I drop it straight into the volcano from orbit.

Maybe the reptilio females lay unfertilized eggs that must be fertilized by the males, human or otherwise. So like there can be clutches of unfertilized eggs in cryo, that you can just thaw and fertilize whenever you need extra hands to tend to the farm.

The ash plume of the volcano makes orbital target acquisition difficult and so your spaceship must fly in the atmosphere and below the smoke to be able to drop it, dumb gravity bomb-style, whereupon they will be attacked by dragon-riding Nazguls.

Can you even hit a volcano with a 4 ton block of steel jettisoned from an airlock, from orbit? Semi-serious question.

Guys, guys, guys. This here is a scenario basically written to force cooperation on us. We have between us some ships that can ferry things between out hsips and between us and the ground. We have some ships that can mine resources, some ships that can build things from mined resources, some ships that can carry large numbers of people etc. And loyal space-monkey minions, can't forget them.

Between us, we have everything needed for orbital industry, to build moonbases and mars bases and further out. Orion Rockets that can do all the things our ships do, and can be armed how we like, should we wish. Together, we can have the stars.

Or we can conquer the universe. That works to.

Dude, I propose you and I start to work together towards such common goals- by the time everyone else has finished with questioning the minituae of our crew's' biology, we'll have such a head start in our industry nobody will be able to compete with us.

The minutiae of the crew's biology will allow me to be the licensed intergalactic distributor of post-organs though, and when your organoids reach their planned obsolescence expiry date, you'll have to come to me for brand new elfy pointy ears with hyperspace wifi connectivity and digital surround sound capability and ten kinds of sonar modes. :P

I think running a spaceship logistics thing would be cool. Like truckers, in outer space. There can be intergalactic truck stops with booze and hookers.

Man, imagine, these hookers will be default "blanks" physically. Because of the biodiversity of these space-trucks' crews, some are elfy pointy ear bald Zoroids, others are reptilioids like I described. So our hookers will be modular organisms, with just holes for ears, noseless, maybe Protoss-like with only vestigial mouths. And when they select their clients, so they can match their client's desires, they can then attach modular noses or proboscises or beaks to their faces, cosmetic pointy-ears or antennae on the sides of their heads, or wear detachable hairs or feathers on their skin. Like wearing makeup, except instead of lipstick and eyeliners, it's like detachable superficial organs and tissues. Lego-people.
