Good Books on Henry VIII

Post by Flagg »

Hey, my mom is on a major Tudors kick and now that she's done with the whole "wives thing" she's interested more in Henry himself. Now I found a book entitled 'Henry VIII and His Court' which she is really liking quite a bit, but I was wondering if anyone know of other books of Henry VIII that get into his childhood and made him the man he was. I've done some searching but found mostly fiction and the rest are all about his wives.

Thanks.

I'm reading one right now by G.J. Meyer, also called The Tudors. Unlike the show, this book actually looks at the Tudor dynasty as a whole. It starts with the reign of Henry VII. I'm currently reading the part dealing with the life of Edward VI. It has these little sub-chapters explaining more about life in the Tudor era, things like food or the Tower or the state of the Church. I'd highly recommend it.

David Starkey wrote a whole bunch of books on Henry VIII, covering just about every aspect of his life (and his wives).
He also presented a documentary on the Tudors which was excellent.

I've only read "Monarchy" by him, so I can't tell you which one about Henry is the best one to read.

My favs on this subject:

The Six Wives of King Henry VIII- Allison Weir
Henry VIII: The King and His Court- Allison Weir
The Tudors : The Complete Story of England's Most Notorious Dynasty- G.J. Meyer

Historical Fiction but very true to the real story and very entertaining:
The Autobiography of Henry VIII: With Notes by His Fool, Will Somers- Margaret George
