Daniel Craig fans will not be happy!
Producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli of EON Productions just announced in a press release that the next James Bond movie has been delayed indefinitely.
“Due to the continuing uncertainty surrounding the future of MGM and the failure to close a sale of the studio, we have suspended development on Bond 23 indefinitely,” they said said in a joint statement. “We do not know when development will resume and do not have a date for the release of Bond 23.” (The film was originally set for a late 2011 or early 2012 release.)

Fuck! Aw man, does this mean that Daniel Craig will end up just like Timothy Dalton? Goddamn! Fucking Quantum of Solace! All it's fault! Stupid-ass shakey cam.

Quantum of Solace pulled in $586M. MGM's problems were not caused by that one James Bond movie, nor could MGM have been saved by it unless it pulled in like Avatar dollars.

I wouldn't be sorry to see a new Bond.
I'm sorry, but to me, Brosnan was the definitive Bond. This Craig character is just painful to watch.
I doubt they'll get Brosnan back (is he even still around? It'd be awesome if they did,) but someone like him would be good. At least someone who can actually pull off suave like it comes naturally to him, not the Craig "Cowboy Cop" Bond.

I like Craig Bond. His brutality and don't-give-a-fuck-ness is a very nice differentiation from the standard Bond.
Though I would not be averse to a new Bond who is more like, say... Roger Moore.

Re: Bond 23 postponed "indefinitely"
There's tension between two aspects of the Bond character. On the one hand you've got "James Bond, glamorous charismatic guy." On the other you've got "Hello! License to kill! He's a freaking assassin!"
Connery pretty much defined the role by adding the glamour to what had been pretty much a pure assassin in the books. Moore was so much about the glamour that the assassin aspect suffered; it was hard to imagine him as a cold-blooded killer because he was so much of a playboy (and because the plots were so campy).
I'm afraid I don't really have the Dalton films nailed down in my mind well enough to comment on him, but I definitely think Brosnan did a good job bringing the character back into balance with more of the "assassin" side.
Whereas Craig-Bond is pretty much pure assassin. Much less in the way of gadgets and camp, which takes away from the glamour... but the advantage is that you can very easily see how this guy decided to become a professional MI6 killer for a living.
Because, well, Shroom is right: He's got brutality and don't-give-a-fuck-ness.

Same, although in my family most seem to prefer Sean Connery (I like him, and Daniel Craig, but Brosnan's still the best IMHO). Pity #23's been put on hold, but meh, this is the James Bond franchise we're on about, it's not like there won't be another one eventually, it's a huge cash cow after all. Only question is whether it's any good or not.ShadowDragon8685 wrote:I'm sorry, but to me, Brosnan was the definitive Bond. This Craig character is just painful to watch.

I think Craig was excellent in Casino Royale, because that one had a very smart script.

That's the most relevant question. Casino Royale is my favorite Bond movie, and Quantum is right up there as well. I want to see more of this Bond.Only question is whether it's any good or not.

I thought Quantum of Solace was a pretty boring Bond. Not due to Craig, he was great, but because the script wasn´t all that great. Casino Royal on the other hand was awesome and the first bond to better than the original Connery Bonds.

Brosnan a better Bond than Connery? Fucking LOL!
And Shroom, this doesn't mean no new Bond film with Craig, it simply means until the studio is bought or the franchise sold, they'll be put on hold. I'm surprised Sony haven't already done this.

Re: Bond 23 postponed "indefinitely"
Craig was good in Quantum, and I think if it wasn't for him the film would have been a complete flop (well, him and Olga Kurylenko, but that may just be me). I don't mind waiting a few years for a new Bond film, if they put out too many too soon they'd probably just overexpose Craig and the franchise. Things can get boring and old real quick.

Re: Bond 23 postponed "indefinitely"
That's a damn shame. Casino Royale was damn near perfect (except for that over-extended third act), while Quantum of Solace extended the plot and re-introduced SPECTRE introduced QUANTUM into the mix (the movie itself was sadly lacking, though). I'd really like to see more of Craig as Bond. He really brought back that sense of Bond as a brutal killer. I think with more movie outings, we would have seen him start to develop that charisma Bond has.
Brosnan did a pretty good job, I think... he kept most of the assassin half, but brought more of the suaveness that Dalton lacked.
When it came to the brutality and the 'killing machine' aspect of Bond, Dalton was a kind of proto-Craig. Especially in Licence to Kill, where you can see the writers trying to keep to the Bond formula, while (pun intended) stirring things up a little. It had a nice, mean vibe to it, which was REALLY welcome after all those years of Roger Moore's campiness. I read a huge coffee-table book on Bond a few weeks ago, while waiting at the dentist's, and Dalton mentioned that he had read the novels and tried to play the character closer to those.I'm afraid I don't really have the Dalton films nailed down in my mind well enough to comment on him, but I definitely think Brosnan did a good job bringing the character back into balance with more of the "assassin" side.

Not sure why there's so much dislike for Quantum. It started out feeling a bit clumsy, with some odd moments and some confusing fights and plot scenes, but some of the latter scenes, and particularly the last twenty-thirty minutes, kind of made up for that in my opinion.
And yes, Craig was a badass. Though I've only watched four Bond films (Goldfinger, Die Another Day, Casino Royal, and Quantum of Solace), I'd say that so far, Quantum of Solace's Bond is probably my favorite as a character.

Re: Bond 23 postponed "indefinitely"
That’s really not a high return for a 230 million dollar movie at all, and that would have monopolized a large portion of the studios operating capital. A studio needs a movie to make several times its budget just to break even, as the distribution companies and the theaters, DVD sellers and investors all take large shares of the pie. They probably would have done better making three movies for 75 million each instead. But it’s hard to blame them for wanting to exploit the Bond rights.neoolong wrote:Quantum of Solace pulled in $586M. Re: Bond 23 postponed "indefinitely"
Box Office Mojo reports a 200M budget. Take half of the BO take for theatrical rentals and you get $293M revenue to go against the costs. And that's not taking into DVD sales, nontheatrical revenue, TV sales, etc.
Also, theatrical rental revenue is roughly 40% of total revenue for a movie. So exactly how is that not a pretty good return?

Damm. MGM's continuing financial problems worry me because it also puts the future of the Stargate franchise at risk, too.

Dalton's action scenes were amazing, but the rest of his movies were awful. He just wasn't a good actor, let alone a good Bond.Simon_Jester wrote:I'm afraid I don't really have the Dalton films nailed down in my mind well enough to comment on him, but I definitely think Brosnan did a good job bringing the character back into balance with more of the "assassin" side.
If I wanted to watch a Jason Bourne movie, I'd watch a Jason Bourne movie. I'm not terribly fond of either Casino Royale (when he coughs, scratches his nose, sweats profusely, licks his lips, breathes heavily, and fidgets nervously--that's the tell--that I learned from watching him play a terrific hand) or Quantum of Solace.Whereas Craig-Bond is pretty much pure assassin. Well, whether you like Connery, Moore, Bronson, Dalton, or Craig, I'm disappointed that I have to wait longer for another Bond movie. I rather like the re-boot while still loving the nostalgic campy ones from my childhood.

Re: Bond 23 postponed "indefinitely"
Craig is a fine actor, and the last two bond films weren't boring, but I felt that Craig's bond would have been more at home being named something that wasn't "James Bond". Seconding Connery/Brosnan as my favorite bonds.
A scientist once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the Earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the centre of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy.
At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: 'What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise.
The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, 'What is the tortoise standing on?'
'You're very clever, young man, very clever,' said the old lady. 'But it's turtles all the way down.'

Can I second AV here - "Brosnan better than Connery" = fruitloop alert.
I didn't mind Brosnan - he was a decent, if safe, choice. But, he was no where near the level of Connery or Dalton (who's films never seem to be shown on TV these days for whatever reason). Craig has given a much dirtier and less refined rendition of the role and, if we consider that he is less advanced in his career than any of the others (CR was Bond's first job, remember), this works pretty well.

Hillary, can I say: Stuff it?
I've seen the Connery Bond, and the Brosnan bond, and I'm sorry to say, Brosnan Bond was better. Now, the Connery Bond was the second best, don't get me wrong, but I just think that Brosnan was the definitive James Bond. He epitomizes everything about James Bond there is; the Pinnacle Bond, if you will.
The Daniel Craig Bond is a poser tosser in comparison to either of them.
