I'm going to wait until the end of next week, at the very least, so I can tally up the amount of protein I get in my diet. Then I'll decide if I'll buy some of the powder or not.
Most people on a typical western diet get far more protein than they need making protein supplement superfluous. A glass of milk, a peanut butter sandwich, and a 6oz serving of meat will provide enough protein for the average person. That's all the average person needs in a day. It will of course vary depending on your size, build, and activity level, a large active male will need more than a small sedentary female.

This doesn't seem right.

A week ago, I started dieting and exercising. I want to lose 90 pounds by July first, 2009. So far, in the past seven days, I've lost 5 pounds when I thought I'd lose 1-2 pounds. Of course, the scale I'm using is kind of old, and what the weight shifts by 5-8 pounds on how I'm standing on it, but I'm pretty sure that figure is correct

According to numerous sources I found online, with my height and bodyweight (6'6" and 323 pounds, when I started), I have to limit myself to 2689 calories each day. That would make me lose weight regardless if I exercised or not. Even the Diet software I'm using says this.

The problem is, ever since I switched to low calorie foods and drinks, I'm having trouble even getting to 1500 a day! And my software program is bitching to me about it!

Just today, I had two pizza pops for breakfast, a tv dinner for lunch, and now I'm having two more pizza pops and two cups of brussel sprouts just to make sure I got my daily quota of nutrients. Oh, and I also had a 1 liter of non diet cola in there somewhere, which all by it's self equaled 500 calories.

That got me to a whopping 2000 calories. Not only that, but I only exceeded my Daily Value for nutrients in Sodium and Sugars! Cholesterol, Fat, and Carbohydrates are all under! This can't be right!

I feel incredibly guilty guilty eating what I think basically amounts to junk food all day today, but according to my sources, I'm not having enough calories....

And this is all ignoring whatever exercising I'm doing, which just makes it worse.

I want to feel good about what I've accomplished so far, but instead I'm worried that I'm damaging my body doing it by losing weight too fast.

A good first step would be to not eat garbage, because that's what cola and Pizza pops are. If you want a good, healthy source of calories, fats and proteins, try peanut butter. I of course mean the real peanut butter, as in the kind where the only ingredient is peanuts and the oil floats to the top when not refrigerated. Not that Kraft-style garbage. Almond butter is nice too, albeit usually a bit more pricey. Don't over do it though. It's really easy to go overboard with the stuff. At least for me, it is.

Oh, trust me, I don't eat like that everyday. Not anymore, at least. I'm just surprised I could and still come under my daily allotment of calories.

[edit] And yes, I know the stuff I ate yesterday isn't exactly low calorie food. I just wanted to post an example from a day when I wasn't even trying that hard to watch my calories. Wow, I must have been a real pig before I started this...

Does anyone have advice for how a husband can avoid weight gain w/ my wife's pregnancy? She's sending me out for 11pm nachos and there's all kinds of delicious things in the house.

As one of the originals in the first diet thread, I'm back. Bah :P.

I'm starting a diet again, for the first "official" time since November 2006. I currently weigh 76.9 Kg (400 grams and 2 centimetres more than then), with a waist diameter of none of your business, and fat/muscle ratio of "way too low with university and military work meaning I haven't exercised in 2-3 months".

I'll be exercising in the gym (strength/un-aerobic) as well as getting back into aerobic exercise, I'm hoping to meet the schedule of 3-4 times a week. As for food, every 3 hours, protein (meat or fish) for lunch, and light bread with some form of 5% cheese/milk based product for dinner, brunch and work.
I kicked it off with eating light bread instead of home made bread yesterday, and swimming for half an hour.

To be Continued.

Kind of starting to put a little weight back on; pants are getting a little tighter.

So I'm buckling back down and kicking the cardio into gear.

Don't know if anyone remembers me from the first thread. Well, the pendulum swung back from 300 to 248 and now to 320, yeah, ouch.

The girlfriend and I have started Weight Watchers and with the significant changes in diet hope that our first weigh in tomorrow will reveal some significant losses.

We'll see I guess.

I'm back up to a little over 190 lbs. That means it's time for panic mode. I can already see the weight gain in my face and on my abs. I've sort of been letting loose over the last couple of weeks. My new girlfriend keeps lots of junkfood at her place, which isn't a problem for her since she doesn't have a problem controlling herself. However, ever since I started getting in shape, I've made it a rule not to have junkfood in my place, precisely for that reason. Add the three Thanksgiving suppers I attended over the weekend, and well... You get the idea. The fact that I turned in the bike for the year a few weeks ago doesn't help either.

But I'm buckling down now. I'm going back to my strict diet, and will of course continue my exercise. Hoping to to be back down to 180 by November 1st.

Shit, back up to 90kg. I might have gained some due to an increase in musclemass, but it's probably also because I've been snacking too much.

I've over-indulged in the last week and I can feel it in my gut. Time to limit what I eat and kick the cardio into high gear for a week or two.

So 4 visits to the optometrist, a retina specialist, and an MRI later, I have something called idiopathic intracranial hypertension. Essentially my brain thinks it has a tumor when it doesn't, and builds up pressure to combat something that isn't there. Treatment involves a medication and a possible lumbar puncture. Oh, and weight loss. Cause don'tcha know this pretty much only happens to women 20-40 who are overweight or obese. I understand the importance of being healthy and going to the gym and whatnot, it's just very discouraging to be diagnosed with my first "fat disease."

Current weight: 87kg
Goal weight (8th of January 2009): 82kg

I'll have to reduce intake of calories to 2466 kcal per day. Only managed to eat 2023 kcal today though, and most of that was from carbs (55%). I really need more protein in my diet. Today was my first day using FitDay to track calories.

Well, the girlfriend and I joined Weight Watchers five weeks ago on the Core Plan and have started to approach something resembling a stride.

I'm down to 302 from 320 and she is down a total of 9.8, She's doing great!

We have had a few food fits because we got this way through love of cream, bacon, fat, sugar, etc. and while the Core Plan lets us eat enough to feel full, it removes bread, her weakness, and sugar and fats, my weakness.

Week 1 we stuck right to the diet and by Saturday were really missing our favorite foods and it really paid off, 10 for me and 4 for her.

Week 2 was easy, with the previous loss on our monids we really kept to the diet and hoped for the same results. She lost 0.8 and I lost 4. She was expecting more.

Week 3 we missed our weight but for the most part were good on the diet.

Week 4 we stayed over at my parents house and they fed us sandwiches, oh precious sandwiches. Thursday was a black tie dinner at the swankiest hotel in town with her lawyering company. Mmmm chocolate tarts. I splurged, she was strong and even resisted the fresh warm rolls. We then went to Restraunt Week in Richmond for two 3 course full fat full calorie eating extravaganzas, diet be damned. I gained 0.2 for the two week strecth and she lost 1.8. I felt depressed but she helped me feel better.

Week 5 was pretty good. We made the mistake of listening to her hair dresser and tried a Chinese restraunt. He said it was "fabulous" in the way only a gay man can and it turned out to be terrible, horrible, disgusting buffet food. Next day was a dinner in DC at the West End Bistro. Sweetbreads for the first time, what's with all the hype?, and an overall good meal had me worried about the weigh in. I lost 3.8 and she lost 1.8. Go us!

Going into Week 6 I know we are going to hit a plateua eventually but for now, diet is doing the job. So far so good.

Hi all. Me and the GF are looking to get into a diet plan, and some generic advice/support would be REAL helpful.

Little bit about us: I am 5'10" and approx 300 lbs. but carry it well (its apparently an Italian thing, where some people who look like they're 300 pounds are very wide, I'm... barely above medium frame. I have manboobs tho :( )

She's about 5'4" and 230, and has recently been diagnosed with diabetes (apparently its a genetic thing for her, as her mother has it as well and barely weighs 120 lbs soaking wet)

We're upper lower class almost middle class income wise, and suggestions about where to go and what habits to pick up would be great. Thank you!

I have always thought this site is an interesting place for diabetes information and diet, and a good place to start. The general idea - eating to the meter, and figuring out which foods your body can handle without dangerous increases in blood sugar levels-- makes sense to me; some of the specifics with regard to carbs/fat/ and protein, I would do a little more reading.

Holy shit!!! 188. I'm making progress. I've mainly just been eating less fatty food, I need to start exercising. I start my PE class next semester, so that will definitely help.

I'm starting to get back on the losing weight kick, as it is slowing me down and I just don't like how I look. I'm currently at 164, I want to drop at least 30 lbs, preferably closer to 40 and then start replacing it with muscle.

So, I'm back w/ new determination: I'm 5'11" and I weigh 278lbs. I'm committed to going to the meetings weekly (something I've been lax on) because that's where I get the most motivation for losing. Also, has anyone seen the new program stuff yet? I'm interested to see what changes there are.
