Well had another run in with my fundy ex-roomate, and have been hearing all kinds of fruit cake lately from all around me. So how many people besides me are surrounded by Hicks, Trailer Trash, Rednecks, Bogans, Mouthbreathers, etc....

Well there is a fellow I'm going to school with. Decent dude, older than myself but young in spirit who unfortunately lacks a decent education in history, math, basic sciences and arguing/debating skills. We got into a discussion about Israel today and one of the points that came up was the idea of giving back the land to Israel. He thinks for some reason that A)The Brits bought their mandate from the Ottomons for the purpose of B) selling it to the Jews who in addition to wanting their homeland back C) also wanted to use it to make money (you know, because they're Jews). He then says that the US's attitude toward Israel is appropriate, not because having some semblance of an "ally" or "friend" (whatever the relationship is) but because the United States has a moral obligation to "do right in the world". Additionally the Jews were owed that land because, you know, they had it first. My simple rebuttal was A) The Brits got the mandate because they kicked the Ottomans out of Palestine during WWI B) Jewish people moved to Palestine in increasing numbers due to the Zionist movement and that Israel was established as a state independently of direct British involvement (arguably illegally under International Law since it took place the day before the British mandate was relinquished but that's nitpicking the symbology). C) ???? The land is pretty shitty and there are better places to go if your goal is money. I then mentioned if it was about "moral right" then the US should also restore aboriginal north americans to their homeland. He than replied that that's "too far back" and that "native americans didn't have a culture or cities or a civlization worthy of being restored." I then mentioned that the last major Jewish diaspora occurred between 70AD and 130AD between the sacking of Jerusalem and the defeat of the Bar Kokhba revolt, far further back than the 400 or so years since Europeans settled (or invaded) north america. Hey than hand waved and repeated the "no culture" bit and said something about thanksgiving actually being about the native americans luring the english settlers with food, attacking, and then being defeated.

Dude, I live in Montana. Some of my extended family ARE cowboys.

I live in a part of London popular with young professionals. Pretty much the antithesis of hickville.

I live in the Ottawa Valley, the entire place is populated by hicks. You could drop a nuke here and it would only improve things.

I live in the suburbs in a red state. I live with people worse than hicks, I live with 'normal' people who pretend they are hicks.

The fact that he's aware of the British Mandate for Palestine in the first place would disqualify him from "fuckin hick" status for me.

I live in the sticks but the problem is not rednecks, bogans, or any of the above but fucking urban refugees that drive 60kph on a road that is signposted 50 and should be 40, because it has no parallel footpaths and I'm bloody surprised there aren't more pedestrian strikes given how much roadkill there is every morning. Fucking idiots can't see well enough in the dark to slow down in time before hitting macropods. I have to say man... Mormon pseudohicks? That is actually pretty god damn disconcerting. Me, I live in TX, where even our urban population has a good number of hicks. In fact, I was nearly killed a couple of weeks ago because a guy camping on public land thought it was acceptable to be quick on the draw with a shotgun at a campsite within a national forest (and the guy had, of course, no teeth)

I still work in and used to live in this ultra rural place, but no actual hicks* here.

*Hicks as in uneducated racist morons. Unless being a hick means you like guns, hunting and driving a tractor to the store. In that case yes, and liking it.

That being said, my brother is the biggest idiot I have ever seen. Among other things: worships dragons as gods ( ), believes that there is a 'Martian Bigfoot', thinks Anonymous is the second coming of Jesus, and has the typical GOP view that Obama is a socialist (and apparently a fascist...even though socialists and fascists hate each other...).

Hah! Dorset's not that bad!

Not sure about hicks, but we do have huge numbers of Brummies down here. They come down during the summer, see the place in the two days of sun we get and sell the house as soon as they get home. And then they see it in winter..... And some of them are exceedly daft.

Not as bad as the Cornish, but then what is?

I'm not in Dorset. I'm in a tiny village on the outskirts of Wellingborough, a town so unspeakably awful it made Luton look good by comparison.
