No :P.

Currently re-reading Collapse and the Zombie Survival Handbook. (And a primer on Calculus).
Narkis wrote:The Golem's Eye by Jonathan Stroud. Second book in an entertaining trilogy about a "modern" world where the magicians dominate the muggles, something that I wanted to see ever since I read Harry Potter.
Very nice series that, especially the first 2 books. Takes a lot from Terry Pratchett's style of amusing annotations .

Discworld's Mort

Broomstick wrote:Small Gods by Terry Pratchett. A re-read, actually, first time was when it was originally published in the early 1990's.
Coincidentally, that was the one I was reading before (both are re-reads since a few yaers ago, but this time in the original language)

I am by coincidence also reading this. It is certainly bursting with information, and most of it is very interesting and insightful; however I think sometimes the author goes a little too far in attempting to communicate the totality of everything he has ever learned about North Korea. I have skipped a couple of chapters in the latter third of the book because they appeared to simply be endless transcripts of the life stories of various North Korean defectors.

Once I have finished that I am moving onto "Cryptonomicon" (Neal Stephenson) and "The Road" (Cormac McCarthy), both of which have been recommended/lent to me by friends. I know nothing about either of them, anyone care to venture their opinion on them?

The Trudi Canavan 'Age of the Five' trilogy comprising "Priestess of the White", "Last of the Wilds" and "Voice of the Gods".

Hitler's Generals edited by Correlli Barnett is a series of biographical sketches of Hitler's principal land marshals. It is rather good, highlighting hardly known leaders in the english speaking West who commanded entire armies and fronts.

Did you read her Black Magician Trilogy? There's a new one coming set in Kyralia that serves as a sequel.

What there was more then Gunarian, Rommel, and Dietrich?

Not in the new ones by Nathan Long. Also, I don't think he gets laid in Vampireslayer, and maybe not in Beastslayer just due to the lack of time for it. In Dragonslayer, he gets laid too much.

Seriously, though, I love those books. Whenever I need to read wanton bloodshed mixed with hilarity, I turn to Gotrek and Felix...or maybe Ciaphas Cain. Simon Green will do in a pinch, too.

@Aaron Ash.
The Road should be good, but very depressing. I personally don't like Neal Stephenson.

"Ideas and Opinions" by Albert Einstein.

It's a collection of quotes and essays (often just excerpts) made by Einstein about a number of topics. I find that it's interesting, if somewhat dated.

Next on the list is either Benjamin Franklin's autobiography or the last book of the original run of Dune books, just to complete the series. After that, I don't remember because I'm not where I can see my "to be read" shelf.

Just placed my first order with Amazon.

I ordered "Studying Engineering at University: Everything You Need to Know", mostly because of all the study skills information in the book.

Age of the Five was a massive disappointment after the Black Magician trilogy. I did read it, but it felt very much more like work than leisure.

The new Kyralian trilogy looks promising in the beginning of the first book, but my GF who loved the Black Magician trilogy said the new novel (Magician's Apprentice) falls flat and becomes far too predictable before the halfway point. I started reading it but it got shelved by the Malazan series.

She's right, but Magician's Apprentice was a prequel, not part of the new trilogy. I haven't picked up the first book of that yet, but I'll tell you how it was when I do.

Dietrich wasn't even in it or Hausser, the book covers strictly Wehrmacht generals and also Kesselring and Student. There were plenty of interesting ones including the old desk generals like von Fritsch and Beck all the way through Model and von Manteuffel. The book covers all of the major front commanders with the exception of von Bock. The most interesting bios for me were von Kleist and Senger because they are hardly covered in Western circles even though the former commanded the panzer drive on France.

I suggest you spread out the Stainless Steel Rat stories so that they don't get old too quickly. Unfortunately, I tried to read the omnibus straight through and just kind of fizzled on him.

You might also like Keith Laumer's character, Retief.
Sounds like a good idea, got Gaimans American Gods and a couple of Dark Tower books hanging around unread, I'll use them to break the Omnibus up.

Just finished The Algebraist .... am I the only one who thought "Affront!!" when reading about the Dwellers? :D

So what happened in Dragonslayer?
did the town decide to offer virgins to the dragon before Gotrek killed it?

Well, maybe I exaggerated, but Felix and Ulrika pretty much shack up for half of the book, which makes Felix really think about breaking his oath with Gotrek. In the end he spends too much time with Ulrika and they find out that their relationship is only built on sex and the thrill of surviving danger. There will be repercussions from their breakup throughout the next few books, although the situation is handled well. Really, Dragonslayer is the book in which people tend to get a bit sick of the Felix and Ulrika sexcapades slowing down the adventure.

I just realized that I earlier confused "The Caine Mutiny" with "the Rachel Caine series" and that my reply made no sense.

Finished Small Gods, now reading Arthas, Rise of the Lich King by Christie Golden. Yes, I'm a WoW player and WoW fan - it keeps me from watching TV, what can I say. This WoW novel at least seems to be readable - several others I just skimmed through to suck up the relevant lore. This one might actually be entertainment.

I bought a copy of The Picture of Dorian Gray to read on the plane.

The first chapter, especially, comes across as incredibly gay. I wonder why.

After all these years got my Dad reading Pratchett .... I keep getting Ooked at now.
Got to pop up to Wincanton soonish, Terry drops in on a semi randomish basis & the town that's twinned with Ankh-Morpork is only ten minutes away.

Well almost done with Daemonslayer, and so far the people I've felt most sorry for so far have been the Tess of D'ubervilles rape victim turned Khornate+daughter, and the Granddaughter of Ulric.

Uhm...What?

There are no rape victims in the book, unless you count some of the Slaaneshi daemons or something, and the only female character, Ulrika, is a Kislevite and not related to the god Ulric at all, except for being named after him, which is odd since her people don't worship him. I don't understand your references.

Presently between books; I rolled through Pratchett's Nation this morning, and Iain M. Banks's Matter is next up.

I might go for some Kipling after that - either re-visit Captains Courageous or read Kim since I've now got two copies. And when the state's ILL revives next month, I will resume my effort to read through the Flashman series.
