Political Agenda of Russian Monarchists and Romanov Pretende

Post by Pelranius »

Hello again, everybody!

I'm wondering what sort of political agenda the Russian monarchists are purporting (namely the people supporting the various Romanov pretenders and what not) to enact once they take power in Russia. My brief knowledge of the topic is that they want to institute a constitutional monarchy (how they define and practice constitutional remains to be seen) and they don't seem to say very much else about their plans for Russia (at least in English).

Does anyone know? Thanks.

A bunch of talk without reality. They are mostly disconnected from modern reality and living on dreams of a sort of golden age of Orthodox Christendom. The basic political agenda would be to strength the farming character of the nation and use cossackdom to secure the tenuous hold on the south (which Putin is already doing) while giving the Orthodox church fairly extensive influence in society again through the constitution. The Emperor would replace the President and some authority would be ceded to the Prime Minister and the Duma from the current Presidential powers, but for instance the Emperor could still veto constitutional amendments without recourse and would remain supreme commander of the military. Otherwise it would be a fully constitutional monarchy and the goal would be to achieve the reunification of the Russian Imperial state in a confederal fashion under the Emperor while strengthening the Christian and agricultural institutions of the State. The internal domestic programme would basically be socialism with an aggressive law and order component, and the foreign policy would be revanchist.
According to the Tsarist Russia program, every citizen would be granted free medical service and education, modern housing, well-paid jobs and “judicial and physical protection from any encroachments on their lives or property.” Tobacco and alcohol would be taken under state monopoly, foreign sects banned and the death penalty imposed for terrorism, keeping and selling drugs, rape of minors and for high treason.

Foreign policy tasks include “restoring the Russian state within its natural borders” and actively seeking the voluntarily return of Ukraine and Belarus to a unified state; revival of close ties with Russia’s traditional partners, first of all Orthodox and Slavic. According to monarchists, Russia should minimize its membership in any kinds of international organizations.

There was also some kind of earlier agricultural party in the 90's headed by a Grand Duke, but he was on the wrong side of the family split (there's a debate over the legitimate succession) so I never heard much about that.

Thanks. I find it amusing that they want to make the Supreme Commandership of a nuclear armed military to be hereditary (the only other place with that is... North Korea, if the DPRK counts as nuclear armed), though that is a pretty frightening thought.

Unfortunately, it sounds like Putin and the rest of the Kremlin is giving away the farm to their friends Orthodox church right now (though in fairness, they also have plenty of iman and rabbi friends too preaching weird stuff).

It would be a more frightening thought if our current sovereign wasn't widely agreed to have more good sense than any of the last five prime ministers.

I interpreted Duchess's remarks as meaning that the hypothetical Russian Tsar would have the actual command and release authority over Russia's nuclear arsenal (as I understand it, the Prime Minister in the UK is the actual one with that power). Correct me if I'm wrong.

If the man takes his job seriously it might actually work- if he's mad, it creates all the more incentive to get rid of him quickly.

A well designed constitutional monarchy, with checks and balances, might actually work fairly well; it's the breakdown of internal systems for negative feedback and error-correction that kills governments, not any particular way of organizing them.

That's an interesting question, and I am speaking from ignorance here and I assume someone will correct me accordingly, but as I understand the PM has the authority in her name to initiate nuclear protocal, however two points; the UK Military swear allegiance to the Queen and her heirs and not Parliament, and I believe that the Queen can veto/dissolve government but would then have to abdicate.

So it's not like he can fire it off against her express wishes is what I'm getting at, but then if she does tell him to do one, she gets removed from the throne.
