I don't think you fully appreciate the situation. This is not a case of a naive newcomer getting egged on to make mistakes; Colfax by this point has been a regular for two years and has not changed one iota.

His responses to this thread alone should tell you enough about his failures of character. I feel for him and I hope he can pull himself together, but there's no point trying to deflect blame for his behaviour.

Tangential to the issue, but as far as I'm concerned, badmouthing a supermod in the chat is no big deal. SDN has never had jurisdiction over the chat. The only time something on the chat would be a big deal is if one member was using it to stalk or harass another. "Supermod X is an asshole" doesn't cut it.

I agree. Regardless of the impossible enforcement issues, the chat is essentially totally separate from SDN. It's not like we have to go to chat to see SC's issues.

Exactly.

In case we are referring to the Writers' Guild incident, the thread is there for all to read. In that thread, there is no moderator action taken against Schuyler Colfax for badmouthing me in the chat. I actually state that outright. What happens there is that I make good on my promise of moving my discussion with SC regarding his application for WG membership to a public arena instead of a private one if he chooses to create public drama about it. The chat, while not a part of the board, is public, ergo public thread in response to that. I have no idea what he said exactly, nor did I care.

Any board member could do the same. If something that started in private on the board had some tangents elsewhere in a public venue frequented by board regulars, posting their own side of it would not be against the rules. Whatever conclusions anyone drew from it would be the extent of it unless it did turn out to be some more serious shit like stalking.

I think there's a difference between someone being wilfully dishonest, or someone being ignorant of facts, and then people who are just kicking around for fun... and then actual, malicious trolls with intent. I've said a couple of times in this that I haven't interacted with SC much, so I may have a mistaken opinion of him, but he just seems to me to be someone who's "kickin' around". While that makes him useless as a contributor of real content, it doesn't also seem to be malicious trolling.

But you're right-- I may yet change my opinion now that he's on my radar. When this thread first started, a lot of people rushed to give him the benefit of the doubt, myself included. People who've interacted with him more feel he is irreconcilable. So my 'where there's smoke there's fire' detector is starting to buzz.
Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."

In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!

Well that's it; people who are negative in this thread tend to be those whom SC has already said all this stuff too (or something else) and either ignored it, gone against it or pretended he simply never said it. It's really his dishonesty and cowardice more than anything else that makes people (including those who try to help him) eventually become negative.

A few voices from the public:

Shroom Man 777 wrote:I say temp-ban him for a few months just to see what it does. When he returns and shows no change at all, then his ultimate fate can be decided.

I mean, Schuyler hasn't incurred any "legal" action before, has he?

While he's an annoying tweeb, it's not like he's a true fucker or a menace to society. So maybe we can go and do a three two-strikes thing before we do something final about him?

This can be the final warning shot to show him that SDN is SRS BSNSS (serious business) and if he's a complete moron and doesn't heed it at all, then poof, buh-bye.

(Though I would really prefer it if he stayed. He's really silly.)

The light moderation and auto-delete lets him and his tormentors get away with too much shit. If I read the docs right, the current PHPBB software supports blocking a particular user from posting in one topic. Blocking SC from Testing might help him avoid his worst tendencies. Either that or force him into forums where he'll hang himself in short order.

I'll probably get around to this later tonight but the ideas, in general seem to be:

Temp-Ban (3-6months)
Title (To Be Decided)
Table the issue (let him do his proposed solution and re-open if he violates the terms)
Nothing (mentor the kid on our own time)

If anybody else has a specific proposal please add it in and I'll try to get a vote ready for late this evening (EST).

A permban was raised by a number of senators as another alternative.

I'll also make the motion that if the choice is a temp-ban, that the length then be determined by a seperate poll.

I second that motion.

Okay, since we are going to have so many options I'm going to try to work out a poll that doesn't lose its impact by virtue of diffused votes.
