Michael Bay's "Ninja Turtles" reboot has had rough sailing since its announcement. Whether it was negative fan fallout over the initial announcement of the Turtles being from an alien race, "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" creator Peter Laird addressing the updated origin or Kevin Eastman's endorsement, the film has certainly garnered a cornucopia of media attention. However, it looks like the heroes in a half shell will have remain on their home planet for the time being as The Hollywood Reporter reveals Paramount Pictures has shut down the reboot, pushing the December 2013 release date to May 2014. THR reports the studio has laid off pre-production staff for an "indefinite" work stoppage.

The news comes after a number of notable film delays for Paramount following the release of box-office dud "Battleship," including "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" and Brad Pitt's "World War Z." "Ninja Turtles" is produced by Bay's Platinum Dunes with Jonathan Liebesman attached to direct a script written by Kevin Eastman and Andre Nemec.

"Kids are going to believe, one day, that these turtles do exist, when we are done with this movie," said Bay at the revelation of the Turtles' new origin. "These Turtles are from an alien race, and they are going to be tough, edgy, funny and completely lovable."
It's just not Paramount's year.

While I personally enjoyed Battleship as a kablooies movie it was never more than that-the whole setup and half of the stuff everybody involved made absolutely no sense.
And frankly a new Tutles is a double no go. The people who remember them from their childhood are going to go 'Um-they're aliens now? WTF?'. Everybody else is going to go 'who the hell are those guys'?
'Next time I let Superman take charge, just hit me. Real hard.'
'You're a princess from a society of immortal warriors. I'm a rich kid with issues. Lots of issues.'
'No. No dating for the Batman. It might cut into your brooding time.'
'Tactically we have multiple objectives. So we need to split into teams.'-'Dibs on the Amazon!'
'Hey, we both have a Martian's phone number on our speed dial. I think I deserve the benefit of the doubt.'
'You know, for a guy with like 50 different kinds of vision, you sure are blind.'

What!? Why the hell would you even make a movie for an existing franchise, if you're going to go around breaking things that don't need fixing?

Oh, right. It's from the minds that decided people going to see Transformers wanted insipid, violently offensive pod people, and people going to see Pearl Harbour wanted a goddamn love story.

If this was the cause, they have only themselves to blame. A blind lemur could tell that Battleship was going to be a stinker.

Yeah I still want to know who the hell at Universal approved Battleship. How in the fuck did they think this was going to work?

I predicted Battleship as one of the big flops of 2012, back when the project first started. The premise was just something stupid laid on top of a very, very thin brand name. I started to reconsider things when I heard that Liam Neeson was involved, and that the movie would be made with cooperation from the actual Navy.

Things might have worked out if they were able to tap into the appeal of Michael Bay's Transformers movies: lots of invading aliens, hot girls, big explosions, and military tech porn for young men. But apparently, the movie was too subpar or mediocre to get it done.
