Where have all the fluff gone?

Post by Bob McDob »

Remember the good old days, when games like Pong and Asteroids were the standard? (This is a rhetorical question for me because I'm not old enough to remember even the good relatively recent days). I miss those old, simple games, the kind that took only ten seconds to pick up and involved blowing up as many things as possible in the fastest amount of time.

My personal favorates are the scrolling space shooters, like Defender, Raiden, and of more recent vintage, Tyrian and Ikaruga. Still, these are far and far between, and while some games (Serious Sam) capture the intensity of fast-paced action and arcade, games in general are increasingly moving towards a slower, more deliberate pace.

Don't get me wrong, I think things like Rainbox Six are great, and I love thought as much as anyone, but there are times when you just want to sit back and operate on pure reflex for a change. Are there any games (preferably PC) like that? Any good shareware or freeware sites that give that retro feel (you do!)?

Not really.

This is why I keep MAME around for the good ol day kick.

And Ikaruga may be the last you see of a shooter for a long time.

You can still find some mindless games on your PC. Blood2 for example little story lots of blood. Postal also. As far as shooters go they are no very popular on PC. You probably just want to get some emulators (sp)

The first Aliens vs predator game has like no story and you just fire at everything you see. Still one of my favorites. You can probably get that for real cheap

Yeah, I'm trying to get Tyrian to run on my ME ... the DOS version gives me a runtime error and the 2000 one launches a blank window as if loading ... then disappears. My best hope here is a good DOS emulator, but those are unpossible to find.

Ahahahahahahha!

This is hilarious. The majority of the games available nowadays are just fluff. But fluff with shiny graphics.

Real games are few and fucking far between.

There's always diablo...I think that's one game that's easy to get into and you just need to kill stuff. That is the only game I can think of that's something of the tradition of old simple video game fun.

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

I used to play it on 286. My copy had a bug, and right at the last boss, it used to freeze up. Arrrg!

The golden age of gaming is over. Its been ruined partially by games being big business now and not the work of passionate developer. But also, many ideas have been done to death.

Lately Ive been playing some of the infocom classics.
