The world of Detroit: Become Human

Post by FaxModem1 »

If you enjoy David Cage games, or own a PS4, you might have heard of Detroit: Become Human. I like it, it's not perfect, but it's a good, solid experience. You know what's also nice? No microtransactions, no lootboxes, or anything else like that. I bought a complete game, and it shows as such.

If you're familiar with David Cage, you should know what that means, a mixture of 90s adventure game exploring of an area with quicktime events, while your choices in-story decisions affect the story.

Now, let's talk about the world of Detroit Become Human. It's set 19 years in the future, in which there are androids everywhere, bought by companies and individuals alike. They are used for almost everything, construction, service jobs, private healthcare, etc. This means that there is about 38 percent unemployment in the United States. At the same time, some androids are become sapient, and self aware. They are called Deviants. You play as the three android viewpoint characters, and go through their life.

Who do you play as?
Connor, an android built to hunt down deviant androids. You're pretty much K from Blade Runner 2049.
Kara, a domestic servant android, meant for domestic chores, in an abusive household.
And finally,
Markus, the servant for an old artist, as he becomes the leader of the android people.

You choose what happens to an extent. Who lives, who dies, etc.

The world is very interesting, as it's very similar to our world, but different enough because of all the technological changes. All cars seem to be self-driving, a lot of unemployed people are turning to drugs, the army is mostly composed of androids, and Russia and the US are in a heating up cold war over taking the Arctic.

So, let's discuss androids, android rights, and the setting of Detroit.

The plot to this sounds exactly like the UK Channel 4 series "Humans" from about 5 years ago. Any relationship there?
Apparently nobody can see you without a signature.

No official one, but it does deal with a lot of similar issues, and has similar presentation. No human-android hybrids in the game, though.

Yeah, the game is basically 'humans are obsolete' and there is no real support system to absorb the social-economic change from that.

Which makes it's portrayal a bit problematic, as our chief examples of the human unemployed are Red Ice using abusers of androids.

Yeah, by that point there would be no economy because humans may not apply has become manifest.
