Just going to point out that many of the hats are community-made.

Indeed, and those folks get cut checks so big that they have to fly out and personally get them from Valve because they can't be mailed.

Clicking on the image takes you the Orange Box website, via http://www.half-life3.com/ . Odd.

Black-aperture.com is a very odd choice of URL, unless whoever making that website didn't have access to the URLs that Valve already owns. Lets see what a Whois lookup says:

That doesn't look like a domain owned by Valve. Especially with a record creation date of last monday.

I'm pretty sure it's alluding to the fact that the Aperture Science ship the Borealis is apparently going to be a major plot point/location in the next Half-Life game. Also Black Mesa + Aperture = Black Aperture.

You can see the Aperture Science logo inside the logo, faintly brighter than the black background. Put the picture in an image editing program and turn up the brightness to see it better, I guess?

I'm pretty sure this isn't a hoax, but it could be!

Related: http://atramental-plateau.com/ Black Mesa logo and 'E3 2012' in black font on a black background.
