if someone knows where I can get .303 cartridges, I know where to obtain an SMLE no 1. Mk.III in mint condition.

And we should have a military-type in charge, Jegs is the senior active duty guy on the board, so it's him.
A shotgun is a versatile weapon when you've got nothing else. You can load one with either buckshot, or rifled slugs. Though the recoil from a shotgun is rather more brisk than that out of some smaller rifles. (One can equip recoil-sensitive people with 28 gauge shotguns, or some 20 gauge shotguns with sufficient recoil padding.)

Shaun of the Dead is a great film.
Besides if the outbreak is contained in Toronto you have to worry about Nukey Nukey. Get away from the blast radius ASAP!
At first I was going to get all indignant about you attempting to rescue me, but I really don't think I'd be much good in this sort of situation. I can keep my head on me in a crisis, but that's about the only useful thing I'd be able to contribute, since I know nothing of...anything even remotely military. I could defend myself with my nailclippers and drumsticks, and that's about it.

hmm... well, seeing as the only way I would be there is as a slave to one of the higher members...
oh well. lets see what I have for stategys...
1. get all the food out of the hall, and near by grocery stores.
2. get all the guns and ammo we can.
3. get gasooline, and vehicles
4. get to canadian tire- we can hold up in there.
Now heres what we do- since canadian tire has everything from razors to ladders, we get as many of the windows covered with all the shelves. we then start to construct a way onto the roof. next, We will be divided into groups. Military- patroling around. Food- in charge of getting food prepd. Architects- start building supports for the walls, and ladders to get to the roof for a sniping position. people with no real usable skills, or lack of what they need, will be doing taskes like keeping things clean. Now, this is where it splits-
POSSIBILITYS-
1. zombies are to hevilly grouped around for an evacuation crap. architects pretty much build up the place into a gigantic bunker. no more patrols alone, everyone stays together. we keep saftey on, and start to make flamethrower turrets with the gasoline and cannadian tire supplies. we survive in total, about 1.5 months, do to mostly lack of food, or zombie attacks.
I should bring up a point- not a fan of horror films, I've never seen one, or played resident evil... just war strategy and some shooters.
2. the zombies arent as plentiful- we move out.
lets face it; canadian tire has a lot of stuff, but it's not perfect. what we need is a real bunker system. I don't know a lot about canada during the coldwar, but I'm going to guess that they may have a mass hiding point of use somewhere... we should go there. on the way, get all food, everything we can get. We don't need an bunch of old rifles, and their ammo, we take them anyway. Another place we may go would be museams, for the stuff there. carpeting, and maybe even the supplies at a military history museam could be useful. eventually, the zombies will get us. but with our movement, and our supplies, we should get at least 4 months out of it.

hmm... assuming everything goes how I want, I gather up a largish group of people, acquire weapons, fuel, and tools, and barricade the local Costco. Then we wait for rescue.
Costco has basically everything except a gas station, guns and a couple of towers.
The only problem with Costco is that it's rather empty and scary at night if the lights are all turned off.

Wouldn't pikes be a good weapon? Sit on a balcony or behind a chain link fence and poke the zombies through the skull to your hearts content? Chain link might be a bad idea, if the zombies can push it over you'll be screwed. Might I suggest we put down fresh cement and fencing, triple layer so you can stand and stab zombies with pikes until the fence is about to give, fall back and repeat. The idea will be to connect some builidngs so we can get enough room to grow some food, potatoes I would imagine. Using buildiongs as walls.

Hmm; I guess it depends on what the goals are, beyond sheer survival.
I don't know much about Toranto, but I imagine the 'typical' tall, vertical city with a large population. Our first moves would be instinticive and depending on exactly what was going on and what the immeadiate area looked like. Whether or not we were in the starting stages of the Zombie threat or if pretty much half the city was already walking dead.
Mission one: Get the hell out of the city. Large population bases would be a no-no. Granted, in your little group, supposedly civilizations last hope, the more the merrier. But the other million dudes out there that are potential zombies after your brains, can stay.
If we were astute enough to recognize the problem int he early stages, we should just leave, perhaps looting some camping gear/food/and weapons along the way.
If we just happened to stumble outside early in the morning after drinking and a literal mob of zombies greeted us, immeadiate survival goes into effect. I would recomend a small building, no more than.....say ~6 stories high. This give us room to move, perhaps some supplies and resources, yet easy enough to clear, hold and even escape if need be. Even at 6 stories, we can rig some fast ropes and drop out of there in seconds.
Clear the building, lock and reinforce the doors. Set up choke points, say a stairwell, and a watch. From here we can plan the next move. Hopefully circumstance would allow excursions into the city for other supplies.
Ultimately, I'd like to liberate a couple big trucks from the local dealer, rape a camping store, pile a bunch of canned food in the beds of the trucks, and move off into the country where there are less people to do the zombie shuffle.
Find a place that could be made into a kind of hilltop fort, fortify it (defense in depth) see if I can get some crops going and some semblence of a stable food supply and pray to Dog that the thing burns it self out (28 days later) rather than the remake of DotD.

How long will the zombie outbreak last, if it's DotD style? Forever?

The zombies out infront of the mall were still there, days or weeks later without any brain eating being shown. The only time in the remake that they imply that the zombies are dead, is from a headshot.
So I'm going to assume that if it's DotD *remake* style, we're going to need some serious ammo.

Forget you guys, family's more important

. I go home and get my brother and mother. There's usually a lot of bottled water and generally non-perishable food in our place so we'd bring whatever we could.
Head downtown to the
Moss Park Armoury where four units of the Canadian Army Reserve (there's a communications unit on top of the QOR, Highlanders and 7th Toronto) would be getting ready to kick ass. Hopefully you guys are sensible too and go there.
Guns are difficult to get in Canada. You can't just walk into a hunting goods store--I don't even know where I could purchase a gun legally if I had a PAL. Automatic weapons--forget it. The Moss Park Armoury is probably the only place in the city with firepower, besides police stations.
<edit>Oh and of course the Fort York armoury. Maybe Fort York is a better choice, depends which one is closer to where we are.</edit>

Yeah, but by the 3-week mark the zombies had decomposed quite a bit. Just need to hang out for a little bit longer...

I'm in the process of joining the Australian armed forces as an Engineering Officer (through an Undergraduate Sponsorship- they pay me to go to uni, I serve as an officer for at least 4 years afterwards).
If that counts, I'd say that hitting military bases is likely to be suicidal, because they'll already have their defenses up by the time we arive, and they'll be using the weapons we'd be hoping to loot on us when we don't go away like we're told. If the military base has been overrun by zombies, we're even more screwed (because the zombies overran a military base), unless the zombie plague was started by an aerosolized bioweapon, in which case going in there without wearing a BC suit is suicide.
If that doesn't count, and the plague's worldwide, my family would likely head out into the bush- my family has some freinds out there. If it isn't, I sit around and watch as all the websites I visit go down, and thank my lucky stars it isn't happening here.

Okay; we're, presumably, somewhere in downtown Toronto. I've seen aerius suggest we head for the Toronto islands; this, of course, begs the question of how do we get there? We can't simply run like decapitated fowl; that leads to unacceptable losses.
I think we also need a comprehensive list of who's going to be there.

Considering the probable limited availability of fuel and the fuel inefficiency of large vehicles such as fire trucks, the fuel is better used to either power transportation or build molotov cocktails. Using a fire hose to spread fuel on zombies is simply overkill, too.

I could get to Toronto in, I dunno, about a day and a half driving 24/7. This depends on fuel, mind you... of course, if there's a zombie plague going around, there's liable to be a few gas stations out in the middle of nowhere that still have fuel and were abandoned. I've got two kukris, a few machetes, and I can put my hand on a .22 rifle, plus I have grandparents who've got a small armoury in their closet. Go down there, get their guns, and drive like fuck up to NY and grab my girlfriend, go to Toronto.
Of course, all this depends on what the definition of 'driving distance' is... but my priority, regardless of driving distance, is to get to my girlfriend, and get her to safety, along with whoever I meet on my way that's willing to help out.

There's a Petro Canada fuel refinery & tank farm in Oakville about half an hour or so from Toronto, millions & millions of gallons of fuel sitting around there. We just need people to secure & guard it.
