You could do that even if we didn't restart :p.

Although I don't see a rush. With 72 hour turns, most games going to about turn 100, it'll take 10 months. Most turns should be a lot faster than 72 hours, should be 36 for most turns. If everybody ends up taking 72 hours we'll be playing this game for a year : p.

Yeah, I know, but it wouldn't let me delete my turn so I could redo it :P

Empire file sent. Would have done it earlier, but I was at work.

The reason medium is so big is because they upped the max number of systems from 100 to 250 in the settings.txt file in the Data directory. Change it back if you want the correct sized medium galaxy.

Okay done, turn up and running.

Man this is going to be a brutal game. Such a small galaxy, so many peeps : D.

Wow, Romulan shock troops provide that much defense, but only half as much boarding attack...

My comments from earlier in the thread now are coming to some manner of revelation.

So, anyone pick up any nice racial technologies?

Breen disruptor rifles, Borg drone shielding, Hirogen body armor, S. 8472 antibodies, Federation ablative armor, Romulan cloaking devices, and of course Klingon blood wine.

No not yet, the game just started, but if you go through all the trouble of researching boarding parties and manage to capture an enemy ship intact with interesting technology, I think one deserves the technology :D.

<edit>Oh and I turned off tech trading. You can possibly go around it by trading ships, but I'd rather nobody do that, that's a really gamey tactic. So is population trading .</edit>

My point was more the Borg's special tech tree that can mimic any special tech in the game once captured ;)

Well Five of Eight will just have to be careful about her technology then. Besides, look at the strength of Borg Assimilation Drones. If you capture a Borg ship, you'll need four times more boarding parties than they have boarding defenders, or maybe two or three times more boarding parties. Only S. 8472 has harder to capture ships (they have 120 equivalent boarding defense with 20kT of security station). Actually with the standard boarding parties, you'll need five times more boarding parties. It'll be impossible for anybody with general race technology to successfully capture a Borg ship.

Any other surprises Hotfoot lol. Anyway that objection you said you heard from when the game was being developed, it's nearly at version two now, I wouldn't be surprised if this "bug" you were mentioning has been fixed by now. That's probably why Borg ships are so hard to capture anyway.

Oh, for the self-destruct "bug" -- just don't put any self-destruct devices on your ship, put security stations. Then your ship won't self-destruct as soon as it gets boarded even by a highly inferior force. Self-destruct devices are for medium sized ships anyway, large sized ships should have security stations.

Haha, no, you misunderstand. It's not Borg tech that can be copied by others. It's your tech that can be copied by the borg

Not telling ;)

It's not a bug, it's a feature! :)

I suspect SDD's will be back in force soon enough ;)

Capturing seems pretty useless in this mod, though. Unless both races have similar tech, a technologically superior captured ship generally won't yield bigger ships or better weapons for you. It will, however, yield better shields and a level in warp technology, which is very expensive, so it's not all bad, but capturing ships to maintain technological parity doesn't seem to be a valid strategy in this mod.

Except for the Borg who seem to have the most powerful boarding parties.

The point isn't to capture to retain technological parity. The point is to capture to open up theoretical or practical areas where you aren't able to access because they're racial only.

In the end I'll agree with tux, seeing a Borg cube with Ferengi torpedoes might be shocking at first, but unless you totally catch them off guard and they are entirely specialized as to be useless against the new technology, it won't be a deciding factor.

But that's just it. You don't get access to someone's racial tech when you capture their ships. That's what makes it so much less valuable than in vanilla SE4.

Actually, in the ST mod, you do. In normal SE4, you don't.

Say, for example, I capture a Psionic race's ship, complete with allegience subverters. I can keep this ship, and use it against my foe. If I try to analyze it, all I'll get are maybe some better engines and a better hull, maybe some generic tech. I won't get alliegience subverters.

Borg do in this mod, as I remember from the R&D thread over at Shrapnel.

There's the difference. :P

Ah, this is the old "game balance" versus staying true to the canon argument. Truly, the Borg should be able to assimilate technology and integrate it.

Anyway, the practicality is not so great. You only get one level of it, and one level only per analysis. If you focus purely on Borg tech, you'll be more powerful than if you focus on part Borg, part something else.

I see it working in very large 255 system games where the Borg have time to get every technology conceivable, but in this game it's going to be brutal, medium galaxy, 8 players, 10 neutrals, 5 homeworld start. Any Borg attempting to board me will face self-destruct (I have no idea how much tech I need to get this, but on max tech self-destruct is there) or shield regenerators. Even 1 shield point will stop boarding.

Because Borg boarding parties are so powerful, you could make a shitload of spheres and take out dreadnaughts with just a few boarding parties and shield depleters. We'll see if it comes to that though. Combat movement is insanely slow (right now I have 2 fucking combat move points) so anybody wanting to use boarding parties better research engines or they'll be blown out of the sky before their ship gets close enough.

<edit>Along with satellites boarding ships are good warp point defenders, put a small fleet of ten boarding ships, tell them to target the weakest ships, and they'll board minesweepers. Then your mines around your planets will take out the incoming fleet, and it will be dirt cheap compared to a real defense. Also you start out with fucking fighters (shuttles). Can anybody say 1000 fighters with Rocket Pods V on a warp point? And there's no maintainence with units so you can stock up thousands on thousands of shuttles.</edit>

Damn gotta change the master password to the right one!

Also Trogdor, you uploaded the wrong turn file! Hit "cancel current turn" and download a fresh turn, then redo your turn. Your turn file has to be PBWSDNETST_007.plr, not the .gam file, your file is 300k the gam file when it's supposed to be 5k so it's actually a good thing the execution failed or you would have missed your first turn!

This is the first time I've ever done something like this. Where do I find the PBWSDNETST_007.plr file? The file I uploaded I just took out of my save games file.

Sorry. I'm not very good with computers.

There's a separate savegame directory under the Star Trek Mod directory.

Don't worry Trog. It's all good.

Send me the .plr file through e-mail so I can manually process the turn (I'm informed by Dalton that the cancel turn button might not work). I e-mailed the PBW Admin, he should change the master password for next turn hopefully.

<edit>Sorry for teh exclaimation marks, didn't mean to yell at you Trog, this is a game no stress no fuss  at least until the money starts flowing into my greedy little Ferengi hands hahaha.</edit>

<edit 2>Looks like you're having trouble finding the file, Uranium's instructions are right, go to the seiv directory, go to the Star Trek Mod directory, go to savegame, that's where the .plr file is, there should only be one. Alternatively, on Windows hit start, go to search, hit find files and folders, then hit *.plr and search should find pbwsdnetst_007.plr</edit 2>
