Right now I'm becoming extremely pissed off with SpringSharp, or rather its coders who haven't yet activated the engine weight system because it's kind of god damned important to anyone wanting to design, say, destroyers or light cruisers that generally used light-weight machinery to save tonnage and gain speed, and without the ability to properly simulate ships of these types we're all stuck using historic ones or very-lightly-altered historic ones.

But that might be my tiredness, so I'm going to bed. G'night.

it's very accurate for a range of destroyers ranging from DD-1 Bainbridge to DL-2 (1900 to 1940). I was unable to see if it actually worked for battleships, because the hull weight group includes armor (e.g. deck armor is included in the hull weight).

I can answer that - most of them should be lost in a fleet battle with Italy (same way I removed some of the Italian dreadnoughts and older vessels from my OoB). He planned to retain only one of them. The writeup of the battle is on my to-do-list, but unfortunately I haven't found the time to write it yet.

Also widely considered to the worst white elephants ever laid down for the US navy. The original two story boiler room alone should have been a game stopper. The thin armor made a certain amount of sense in 1916, had it been in service at that point. Lexington was the product of a three pronged attempt (the others are Omahas and four piper destroyers) to give the USN the modern scouting force it had never had in the dreadnought era. All the designs were pretty miserable in the intended role and many officers doubted that the extra speed made any difference in strategic terms.

The bright side was, attempts to fix all the problems this scouting force had led directly to the design of the first treaty cruisers and the 10,000 ton limit at Washington.

Now you know why so many destroyers need so damn much power to go fast compared to battleships, and have raised forecastles and yet go really slow in storms. A transom stern and bulbous bow (little used to the point of being largely unknown in 1925) will reduce resistance. Playing with the length to beam ratio and block coefficient to get the same tonnage different ways may also save you a bit of drag. Reducing top weight helps too. However this really is just one of the classic dilemmas of shipbuilding. On the Iowa class you can see how narrow and squished the bow is, this was to gain more length and thus natural hull speed for the minimal tonnage. The result was an Iowa also plows its bow into every wave all storm long as the bow has minimal buoyancy.

Hmm.. On second thought, I think I might shave off some speed off my 50,000tonne battleship, and cut it back down to 24-26knots. That way, I can haul up more armor and still be able to fight at range. That might be a better idea than to sacrifice too much in exchange for speed.

This is probably the final design for my 1922 50ktonne battleship.

My carriers will likely be just Lexingtons.

I need to decide on whether i want to stock up on a lot of ammunition for the 5"/25, but I suspect yes.

Actually, is it a good idea to armor the secondary battery substantially? I'm not sure how much is good. I redid the armoring and layout of the secondary battery for this one:

Actually, two were "sold" to Wilkens and Sorchus. So only one should have been sunk after all.

I think I'm going to give up trying to recreate anything smaller than a cruiser in SpringSharp. I was trying to make a 1924 alternative to the Farragut-class (since I'd like my latest destroyer to be better than the Clemson) and it strikes me as strange that I should have to double the design's tonnage to make it work in SpringSharp.

I was planning on a Clemson-class copy being the stable of my destroyer fleet unless I find a superior model from the British fleet, maybe. Anyway, NCIS time.

Edit: Oooh, the A-class looks nice, though I'd prefer 5" guns to go with my torpedoes. Could make an adaption of them as my 1923-1924 destroyer generation....

The A-class was laid in 1928 though. There aren't a lot of interesting Destroyer classes to choose from post WWI.

Considering the dearth of good destroyer designs I won't object to people having ones from the late 20s in service a few years early, if they're cutting-edge new. For instance I was planning on implementing a modified A-class - likely with American-style 5" guns - as my cutting-edge destroyer class first laid in like October 1923, if maybe a bit inferior to the actual A-class due to losing a half decade of advancement.

Actually, on the Fubuki, I told Zor he could be laying some down. But at least Japan seems to have kept up DD construction. The Mutsuki isn't bad either from the look of it.

I don't think "dearth" of destroyer designs makes it acceptable to fast forward to late 1920s designs - laying down, sure. Having in fleets? No. Many late WWI destroyers were capable enough to keep destroyer fleets going until early 1930s.

And - being completely fair to folks - there were often periods of complete stall at shipyards, and not just in nations which had no money, but in other large powers as well. Often a new series experienced a several year gap between being procured. That is nothing unusual, and people shouldn't keep building ships all the time. Isn't it, uh... expensive?

Your destroyer's range is horribly, horribly terrible- it would need to refuel constantly on the way from your east coast to west. And that first battlecruiser is waaay underarmored. Even the notoriously-unarmored Lexington design was to have 7" belt. British BCs typically had 9" and Germans even more.

Sticking with coal makes sense if your oil access is minor, but it does cost you in range per ton of fuel (also, coal grades can ruin performance; lower grade coal doesn't burn as well and you lose power; witness one reason for the fate of Cristobal Colon at Santiago de Cuba).
