Lord Pounder wrote: My only complaint is, as others have said Rachel Dawes. I think Katie Holmes played her better in the first movie. This new broad didn't sell it, she didn't make me believe she was a childhood friend and lover of Bruce. She didn't look to me like a tireless idealist that Holmes was in BB.

Hey DPDP I hear whoever that woman was was ugly? LOL! Could it be that her ordinary girl-next-door look was an intentional contrast to the models and random bitches Bruce is surrounded by on account of his staggering wealth, to reinforce that she's from his childhood and different and special, with some special plot-related ability to affect his career as Batman?

No way, right? Right! 8)

To say that Katie Holmes played Rachel better than Maggie Gyllenhaal is pure madness, Stark. Looks have nothing to do with it.

I had to just skip right to 'zomg gurl is uglah' because I couldn't process the concept of Katie Holmes as an actor.

Possibly the lack of testes and penis, yes.

Though I can't really consider her an actress, either.

The word is actor now, in Australia, not Actress. That's what they're teaching kids in schools. There are no more heroines, there are only heros.

Fuck I hate political correctness. I want a world where I can call an actress an actress and call a female doctor a doctress and get very odd looks for it.

Oh, and I preferred the look of Katie Holmes but the performance of the new girl.

Yeah I hear actor is a masculine word, instead of being applied to everyone on stage back when women weren't allowed, and then retconned into 'oh, ACTRESSES' later so you can tell the difference between real actors and ACTRESSES during a period of massive sexism? :) ACTOR-MAN is the preferred term! :)

I'm going to go see my librarianess to get a book by my favourite authoress, lol! I hope the cleaneress isn't there.

PS incidentally the word 'heroine' isn't exactly 'female hero' the way it's generally used - it just meant 'chick in a story', like Helen of Troy etc.

RANT IS FUN.

You know what's strange? An informal poll of my friends indicates that all of the guys think Maggie Gyllenhall is hot--estimates range from "nice" to "smoking"--but all of the girls, including self-described bisexuals, find her hideous. One said that she was so ugly it distracted her from the movie and she was thankful when she got toasted.

This is the guy they want to use to win over "young people?" Are they completely daft? I'd rather vote for a pile of shit than a Jesus freak social regressive.
Here's hoping that his political career goes down in flames and, hopefully, a hilarious gay sex scandal.

Trippin. After seeing it three times... Pounder is right, and I said this already. MG was in no way better than KH at all. Now that might be a product of her being back seated to just a love interest, as opposed to KH, who actually had something to do in BB... I don't know, but I completely favor KH.

That's not surprising; she wasn't the movie-standard 'perfect' woman, after all. I find women are almost as harsh on that sort of thing as internet nerds. :)

I hate BB with a passion of moderate size, but I dont' see that whoever the TDK chick was detracted from the role at all. She did what she was supposed to do, emoted when necessary, etc. Frankly, I think Bale's performance was lackluster, but it didn't impact the movie.

I think the scope of the movie and extra characters needing their own development, meant Bale had less to work with this time and was somewhat neglected in favour of Joker and Dent and even Gordon. Unlike BB, he didn't have to carry the story by himself, since TDK is more about the rise and fall of the one man who can replace Batman. As Nolan said, The Joker is really a constant; a force of chaos in the background affecting the key players.

True I guess; he wasn't bad at all, he just didn't really seem to project anything (and the ridiculous smokers voice made some of his monologues more hilarious than meaningful). But the movie survives ti all anyway, and succeeds regardless.

I will agree with the voice. I knew it was too like Wayne's in the first film, which would raise suspicion, but the one in TDK was far too gruff. Strangely, it didn't seem so bad on the second viewing as I expected it and was focusing more on the dialogue.

Maggie as Dawes was good, though I do feel there's more of a connection between her and Bruce in BB if only because of the story focusing more on his journey.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know if that crazy Joker laugh that Ledger makes was digitally altered to sound that way? That laugh is uncannily natural.

I've not heard anything on that, but it needed to be used more if anything. The whole "Put her down" scene at the penthouse is a good example (and incidentally, that scene is similar to the "Drop him" bit in Prince Caspian, but not as funny).

Nope, it was all him. Nolan said he wasn't 100% sure about Ledger until he heard the laugh.

Yeah, I agree. I hoped to hear more of his laughing. The video he sent to the news network with the fake Batman had the craziest laugh in the whole film.

Btw, that should be uncannily unnatural.

Did the Joker dye his hair green? It seemed to be green at the penthouse scene, but at the police station it was certainly blond, I'm sure.

Didn't know he was at the 21 gun salute until someone here pointed out the cop with the facial scaring.
Turns out that a five way cross over between It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the Ali G Show, Fargo, Idiocracy and Veep is a lot less funny when you're actually living in it.

His hair is tinged green. I thought the cosplayers I came across in a convention a few weeks ago had done it wrong by having such dark hair, but they got it spot on.

Finally saw it. (It came out here the day I flew to Alaska).

Fucking. Fantastic. Film.
The lines were sheer gold ("You want to blackmail one of the richest and most powerful men in the world, who regularily beats criminals to a pulp with his bare hands? Good luck with that".
"Watch me make this pencil dissapear". "Let me tell you how I got my scars". "Too bad for your driver". "Some men just want to watch the world burn". "We burned down the forest". "Put her down! Poor choice of words").
Ledger had an amazing script and some great acting, although voice wise he's definitely inferior to Hamill (Animated series) in my opinion (The way he slurred his words annoyed me, although the irregular laugh is a matter of personal taste).
The truck flipping was beyond awesome, as were his plans in the first half. (Joker stole the movie).
Batman's too strong growling got annoying later on. The Rachel actor was weak, and fugly. (Girl next door look my ass :P).

I'm still trying to fathom what is so bad about Maggie Gyllenhaal. She's not Helen of Troy, but she's also not a dog and she still acted her part out well, even if it was a back-seat role compared to most other characters.

I also find Ledger's Joker's speech to be more fitting the character, although I still have a soft spot for Hamill's.

I don't find any fault with MG's looks, just that her acting wasn't anything special, and certainly not better than KH.

MG does have really deep lines in her face coming down from her eyes and nose that make her look really tired to me, but that is a small nitpick.

Jenn said she thought that see looked gaunt or emaciated.
