30-second naval history precis

The IJN lost more than a score of ships in World War Two due to somewhat spotty DC practices. These included steaming at speed while attempting to stop flooding from hits and poor firefighting practices (this included not removing large quantities of flammables from their warships, because the crews liked all the wood fittings that were common )

eg:
BB Hiei - suffered serious damage at Guadalcanal I, but crucial damage to steering room; spent 14+ hrs attempting repairs in full view of naval air before being battered into condition precluding salvage
BB Kongo - suffered 2 torpedo hits from USS Sealion II, causing damage and flooding, but did not reduce speed in attempt to stay in formation; ultimately had to and suffered progressive flooding and HMS Barham-type capsize and explosion
CV Shinano - last of the Yamato-class hulls converted to CV support ship, was being moved to complete fitting out without completion of watertight integrity , torpedoed by USS Archerfish and floundered for 12 hours before finally sinking

Okay, how about carrier Taiho? At the battle of the Philippines Sea she was hit by a single American torpedo. It fractured aviation fuel tanks but otherwise did no critical damage, as a fleet carrier Taiho should be able to absorb multiple torpedo hits. However her damage control turn on the ventilation system to try to disperse the gasoline fumes, instead they filled the entire ship with them, and after a few hours the entire carrier exploded and sank. Hundreds of tons of flight deck were thrown into the sea! Then they Shinano, which was a carrier converted from a Yamato class battleship. She was hit by four torpedoes but as a 71,000 ton warship that sort of damage should be sustained. The captain wasn’t even properly informed of the extent of the damage and the ship maintained full speed, while meanwhile many watertight doors hadn’t even been fitted. They also just had generally poor performances throughout the war, Midway comes to mind, and they didn’t get any better. The RN had some pretty poor showings as well, like Ark Royal, but they at least improved a good deal.

Same thing caused the loss of the Lex 2 years before, but the difference was that the USN learned from the experience. The IJN never ever seemed to get a handle on DC, possibly from the "attack above all else" mentality.

Yes the USN learned very quickly; and Lexington was also hit by multiple torpedoes and bombs making her situation more understandable. One great thing I love about the Japanese was that they learned they should drain all the AVGAS lines on a carrier when going into action, but unlike the USN they didn’t flush the lines with inert gas. This left pipes full of AVGAS fumes running around the ship, and if one section of line caught fire the pipe turned into a very long torch.
