Well, that was underwhelming. Looks like Russia is again entirely dependent on sheer luck to score without a massive advantage....

Have a very nice day.

Russia shouldn't have gone for the draw. They might end up screwing themselves if Korea or Algeria snatch a win.

Phew, that didn't start well but Belgium managed to make a comeback in the 2nd round. And with Russia-Korea tied it's looking very bright for us to be group winner.

So sad for Ange and the boys, so close to an amazing result against the Dutch. Very proud of Australia, hope we continue to fight and take some points off the Spanish!

Right now Spain is getting the crap beat out of them. 2-0 for Chile after first half. If they lose this one, they're out of the tournament. Which would be the third time in a row that a European defending world champion gets knocked out in the first round (France and Italy being the previous two).

It's amazing watching a side that has won so much (a European Championship on either side of their World Cup win) disintegrate in front of your eyes. Wow.

*grumbles*

I am also worried because our national team is copying a lot of Spain.

This is different mate. It goes beyond system and style. This is Xabi Alonso (Xabi FUCKING Alonso) not being able to make a 5 yard pass. This is Iker Casillas validating everything Jose Mourinho has said about him in just two matches on the World's biggest stage.

I am STUNNED at what I'm seeing.

Yay, 3-2 win! Not as convincing a display as the match against Spain but a win nonetheless and the Australians played very convincingly. The team's well on its way to the round of 16 as group winners, which as I understand it means we miss Brazil, which is good news.

We have been showing some lackluster performance this time arround.

This was about the players, not the system.

I saw his father drink a box of beer in one day (or as my people call it "aon Kast'n"). There is nothing I can teach him that he hasn't already seen. But he is just 7, so I hope this is just a rebellious phase that will go away, ideally supported by a few titles in the next championships.

Also, I cam late for the Chile-Spain game, but fist thing I saw was the goal by Aranguiz :D

When players like Koke comes on, they are able to play better. So I think it is really an issue of personnel rather than the system itself. At the very least, Germany has players that could score without much trouble. You guys always have Klose and Muller to score goals out of nowhere. Spain doesn't.

They kind of have.

The Spanish national team is basically FC Barcelona without Messi, it gives them the advantage that they play together a lot, but the disadvantage that a lot of players who play in europe have seen them play together a lot. (which is why Atlético Madrid put them out of the champions league and pipped them for La Liga this year).

(I have Netherlands in our office sweepstake this year, so my hopes can survive the inevitable ignominious England crash).

But more to the point, I don't know and I don't care. I fully expect England to do its usual trick of scraping through group stage, thereby getting everyone's hopes unrealistically high and then crash out ignominiously.
They didn't bothered this time. Sorry mate. :(
Heck, I even have problems hating England these days. :?

Yes, well, if Italy beats Costa Rica tomorrow and by a large enough Margin and England beats them in the final game, they get to the second round. If Costa Rica wins, then England is out. It's a pretty hairy group, could go any one of several different ways yet.

The worst players on the team were all Real Madrid guys...

And England loses! Hell yea!
That's what they get for what ever the hell they did that I can't think off right now but want to say in order to make a "they had it coming" line.

...
Nah, still got nothing. But they lose, I love it and the world goes on.

Speaking of Welshman. I get the feeling that a certain most expensive player in the world and best known British footballer that happens to be Welsh probably shares your sentiments.

Clearly Hodgson's half-time talk didn't do the job. We needed someone to give a talk like this: YouTube

In any case, I take back what I said earlier about it being refreshing that the papers weren't talking England up like crazy. It seems like when they predict us to win it, we actually manage quarter finals. And when they have seemingly realistic expectations, we post what (barring a miracle) will be our worst-ever World Cup finals performance, and possibly end up as the worst team in the entire tournament.

Gotta love Hodgson saying Luis Suarez 'isn't world class' before the match. What a tit.

Suarez hasn't played for a month since his surgery, comes back and destroys England, buries them.

Bravo Luisito! Bra-fucking-vo!
