Oh...that was just unwise...

Would DC really just put out a gay iconic character in response to Northstar? Is Northstar even a big deal I haven't heard of him and I follow both. My impression is that he's probably as iconic as Mr. Plastic.

I put my money on Martian Manhunter or Guy Gardner. Though MM is more of an iconic hero than GG.

Yeah, I think Northstar even died once. At least I thought he had been part of the Xavier school and then got killed so his students ended up with another adult lead, but then I could be wrong about that.

You know, Plastic Man did come to my mind briefly as a possibility. He's not one of the real iconic characters IMO, but he has had his own cartoon from time to time so he might be well enough known. However, I thought he had a kid at some point but I'm not sure if that was the cartoon and/or a future set comic.

looking at this from history perspective
dick grayson no, still too much of a manslut (just ask Korry, Babs, Clancy's ghost, Donna, Helrna etc.)
Kal-el: no, married, too predictble of a backlash
Bruce: no, too many paedo accusations would emerge with that one

actually went through the multi decad rouster and came up with the following canidates:
Wonder Woman: has enough bad issues with men to be such
Red Tornado what is sexuality for a fully functional android
Martian Manhunter: technically already shown to be shapeshifting bi-sexual back when s(he) visited Wonder Woman's mom in the 1980s.

or as my rather confusing post poinyed out Martian Manhunter already went there over 20 years ago, pointing out that the shapeshifter is Loki/Coyote/shapeshifter bi.

my bet is on Red Tornado, established, appeared on TV back n the 60s and seventies, fully fubctional android, created by a father figure so already has the frakenstine gay potential, and we havent done much with him for the last decade...

Oh sweet Highfather I hope not. If it's just a bit of one-upmanship, you just know it's gonna suck (and most likely retconned away in three years).

It'll be retconned away in a few years either way, if it really is an 'iconic' character (lol I'd only really call Superman, Batman and Robin iconic). But not before they have a couple of cringeworthy (more than usual, I mean) issues focused around serious stuff.

(Please don't misunderstand, I'm not saying that comics shouldn't deal with serious issues, just that it will be done terribly)

Yes and there was quite a shitstorm here about it. Not the sex itself but how it was presented. Same with Starfire.

Supposedly the next issue of the X-men book with the wedding has good pre orders, so DC might be doing this from a financial perspective. Although the more I think about it, comics are usually planned months ahead of time, so unless Marvel's plan leaked out (possible if staff work for both companies), DC was most probably planning this months in advance.

How much lead-up has Marvel's had? Could your "leak" just be a matter of someone reading a previous comic and putting two and two together?

I was speculating about leaks between employees. I can't remember where I read it, but I think it was from 50 years of Marvel - basically in the 70s, Marvel and DC had a lot of employees working for both companies so ideas got leaked between the two companies.

Kinda a cop out there. He's the Golden Age green lantern.

Also, he previously had 2 kids, Jade and Obsidian --who was (now also) gay, and the strain that put on their relationship (Alan being a guy from the 1940s originally and all that) was a recurring subplot (IE: "I love you son, but what you do makes me uncomfortable).

And then the Reboot happened and many things of value were lost.

Guess somebody cared about Martian Manhunter enough to keep change well away from him, so they deflected it onto a legacy character whose fanbase is like five people. I commend DC on their homeopathic approach to any potential controversy or border-stretching. Truly, they are an inspiration to us all.

well like I said, we already heard that Martian Manhunter is Shapeshifting hermaphrodite race bisexual, so like some forms of amphibians they are both genders and are entirely bisexual....

If this is true, I really hope this is Alan Scott In Name Only. If not, I have to wonder why they decided to make him a self-loathing homosexual who married two women he did not love, had a gay kid and then came out of the closet.

possibly but I'd rather not speculate on the matter.

As for Alan Scott it at least makes some sense as IIRC he used a guy who orginally lived in the 1940s (pre-reboot anyway) and thus would most likely have values of that era, you know an era homosexuality was considered a crime, a disease or both, thus he would probably try to "be normal (read:heterosexual)" simply because of the culture he was raised in.

EDIT:when I said "be normal", I meant in the eyes of those around him.
I may be an idiot, but I'm a tolerated idiot
