MS want in on Sony's ground, that's their objective here. They may not turn a profit now, tomorrow, next year or ten years from now. If they can get a nice slice of that pie, then hold it, they'll have a lovely little money maker if they play their cards right. They've got the resources to make this a real war of attrition, though I see Ninty staying the course.

And the PS3 is MGS4 to me. I can't have closure on that story unless I get a PS3, or wait even longer for it to come out elsewhere, if it even does this time. That and RE5, which won't be on Wii from what I can tell. GTA will continue to be better on the PC in my mind, so I'm not worried about them, though it'd be nice if my DS Lite could play the portable games (and Loco Roco, which is all I'd justify getting a PSP for).

Maybe, but the Super Robot Wars series of games which I love tends to be mostly Sony. Other than the handheld series, every SRW game on a Nintendo console has been inferior to the Sony one. Banpresto have always put more love and crafting into the Sony versions. The Xbox? Not a game. The 360? A port of the Gamecube version.

Its possible Banpresto could just jump over to Nintendo, but I don't find it likely.

Wasn't there talk some while ago that PS3 games will be locked to a single console and thus can't be rented that sort of thing? I'm not sure what came of that.

That was just speculation as far as I know. Even Sony's not that stupid with their marketing tactics.

I distinctly remember reading that Capcom was going to make the rest of the RE series for the Nintendo consoles. This was after the RE remake was released on the GC. But they did make RE4 for the PS2. I also want to play RE5, but I will not purchase a fucking PS3 to do so. If it will be released on the 360, then I may purchase that.

I heard that too, but it's null and void it seems. That's one of the reasons I got a GC, because Devil May Cry was going to be on PS2 replacing the RE franchise (smart move...). Nintendo really were on to a winner then; it does seem now, though, that they've lost Capcom and RE5 will be 360 and PS3 only.

Christ, I'm jumping from brand to brand just following my favourite game series.

Not really, Capcom is instead developing a game to specificly take advantage of the Wii controller called "Umbrella Chronicles" built on a modified RE4 engine, which IMO didn't get used nearly enough.

Besides, they never really abandoned Sony either. There was still two Outbreak games, as well as the long time coming decent first person perspective RE game(which was how the series was intended to be done from the start) Dead Aim. RE4 was only GCN exclusive for half a year.(the graphics had to be toned down for the PS2, most of the cutscenes IIRC are just recordings of the GCN displaying them) Hopefully we'll see something like that for RE5 and the Wii.

Do you have a source?

It's easy to be profitable when you've got legions of rabid, irrational fanboys screaming for a system that's nothing but a souped-up GameCube with a gimmick controller. :P
Every Nintendo console has been profitable...except perhaps the Virtual Boy and the DD. They usually make a small profit on every console sold shortly after launch, because unlike certain other game companies, they have a competent financial department :P
Slight nitpick: the 64DD doesn't really count as a console, since it was just an (albeit expensive) add-on for the Nintendo 64. So truthfully, the Virtual Boy has been Nintendo's single console failure: everything else was a success.

Yes, I'm fully aware of that. But since it was a piece of hardware with a distinct set of titles, I'm counting it as a console release, just like the 32X.

The 64DD never launched outside Japan either, so it never had the chance to fail in the U.S...

I don´t know. All the other MGS were playstaton only AFAIK.

Does PC count as a "console" for the purposes of this sort of thing? (Since MGS and MGS2 both made it onto PC, for example.)

MGS was remade for the Cube and the MGS2 Substance port was on the X-Box and PC.

The Wii might get straight MGS2 and MGS3 in the same way the GameCube got the remade MGS, but it can't get MGS4. It wouldn't be able to cut the mustard, hardware wise. Though if there's a fishing mini-game in MGS4, the Wii will have that aspect totally cornered.

That'll be the case with all high-end games developed for X360 and PS3, for that matter.

I just don't understand how anyone actually anticipates buying a PS3. Buying it for a single game is bad enough... but AU$1000? You'd have to be insane. I'd be more willing to buy a 360 just to play N3, and that's probably never going to happen.

Don't be an idiot. That's like saying "we're doing great making $5 million dollars a year, so lets not sell our company and make twice that".

EDIT: If you want to defeat my argument, try saying why a Microsoft acquisition would not make money for Nintendo. Saying that they are making enough money right now is the stupidest line of attack you could possibly take.
