Strangely enough, I don't have a problem with a galactic crime syndicate having - or gaining - influence over the war. I mean, frankly, what was the Rebel alliance if not a small scale organisation that went up against a monolithic body like the GE, David and Goliath style?

I updated the
Eclipse article somewhat, and looking at the screencap I took, the
Eclipse doesn't really look like its Dark Empire self:
Looks almost sleeker, and lacking the "spider-web"-like pattern on its dorsal side. Maybe its unfinished?
Also, judging by the trailer, Zann will have multiple capital ships of this type:

Stas Bush wrote:Pirates building an Eclipse is total crap. Anyway, this "Tyber blah" guy - I don't give a damn. I want my new units from this addon, that's all. And then, there are serious mods like ROTE which I hope will come soon enough and I can play the Clone Wars then

He doesn't build it, learn to read seriously.
He makes an attempt to steal it.
If you play his campaign you win (like in any campaign were your the leader, you know..)
If you play the empire or rebel campaign he loses.
Its not un heard of for criminal organisations to control large areas in star wars. Jabba the Hutt anyone? His whole campaign is building up the power base to get revenge against jabba, he obviously could never take on a whole government. But in small scale battles he could probably fare quite well using old clone wars technology.
The game is much improved upon by several mods, playing EAW vanilla is annoying after running the total realism mod on the game. A much improved experience.

Even Xizor, an Emperor-close guy, didn't go that far.

Well, why not Xizor then? Or Hutts? I mean, come on, this guy is totally "jack out of the box"! Why think up some lame character who annoyingly claims his tech is superior to the Empire (WTF??!)?!

Well, the Starvipers are in the game, either he's a Xizor-rival or he's being partially funded by Black Sun.

The Eclipse II was sleeker than the original, details on SWTC. What worries me is that this storyline must be before DE, which means DE Palpatine didn't make the original Eclipse; it seems very likely to screw up continuity.

Thats because black sun got its legitamency and wasn't cracked down upon BECAUSE xizor was so close to the emperor. If he went and stole the Exectutor he'd be fucked.

I hope the expansion can really improve the standards of EaW.
Ok, perhaps many find it a crappy game. But somehow I just like the feel of commanding a fleet of SW ships in the SW verse. SW mods of existing games are one thing... but a semi-decent SW space strategy game at last it's something I've been waiting for, considering all the past crap Lucasarts has thrown in the RTS genre. I admit there is still SERIOUS room for improvement, but hey it's Lucasarts & RTS what do you expect?
But I forsee several problems.
- They fuck up the Executor size, i.e. 8km. For that matter even with a 8km Executor, it's gonna occupy the entire battlefield. I hope they work this out. I've tried the Home One rescaling mod (to 4+ km), and it's a bloody pain in the ass to maneuver it.
- They continue to fuck up the scale of SW fleets. More Star Destroyers... PLEASE. And stop making the fucking Imperators the "flagship" in EaW. It's a bloody destroyer, not a cruiser, battleship or dreadnaught.

I wouldn't worry too much about scale, given the limitations of the engine. Having 19 klick ships in Homeworld 2 is one thing, but EaW maps are too small.

Worrying about anything when your standards are as low as 'RTS with SW in it' seems a waste of time.

I would have thought the obvious scenerio for an expansion pack would be the clone wars. Instead we get some bullshit story about a super gangster.

Well, this is something new being explored in an old setting, like we've been wanting...
(I know, I know, that was about books and comics) ;)

It maybe a crappy scenario for the new expansion, but at least we get the SSD and Eclipse ships. Hopefully they don't fuck up the scale too much. If we are lucky, they will get smart and put out a third expasion depicting the clone wars, or the events after ROTJ.

Why are the clone wars obvious?
its called EMPIRE at war not Republic at war. More obvious is to just follow the story through Empire strikes back and ROTJ or beyond.
Which is what they are doing, but from the perspective of an outside player.
The Clone wars would probably take place in a sequel, which makes more sense than to do an expansion of it.

I don’t know why they are using a mob boss. But I did noticed that he does have some CIS units.
Now if he was a CIS hold out that went underground for 20 years. Slowly building power and forces. I can get behind that. Its stupid but that’s what a CIS hold out would do.

He would have had to have gone underground and probably gone to the outer rim worlds. The Empire would never let a crime lord build an army and a fleet that could take on the Empire. (Granted Prince Xixor had a sizeable fleet and "army", but he was loyal to the throne.) If the Empire found out, which they would, they would just send enough forces to squash the crime lord before he started having "delusions of grandeur".

I still can't get over how a rival of Jabba's is supposed to be this galaxy-spanning threat. In the trailer, he talks about having weapons and tech the Empire has never seen, and then follows that up by saying that he'll make Jabba pay.

If this guy has capital ships, why doesn't he just go to Tatooine and BDZ Jabba's fat ass?

Indeed. One would wonder why Nar Shadda wasn't littered with more wreckages of very large ships..
Or the hutts are the smallest gangsters in the galaxy...

I actually wouldn't mind if this new faction were the Hutts, rather than some random new upstart. What alot of writers seem to forget is that while many Hutts were gangsters and ruled criminal syndicates, the Hutts also had their own empire, government, and military that was independant from the Empire.

Maybe the clone wars expansion to Galactic Battlegrounds did so badly they decided not to follow the same route with this game?
I think EaW2 will be the Clone Wars, or the New Republic/Imperial Remnant vs the Vong.
*shudder*

I have yet to see any explanation as to why that would be a bad idea for a game.

The Legacy of War mod team is designing just such a mod for EaW, although its Vong content is rather light at the moment, with only one ship modeled & textured.
The Vong team in the warlords mod for Homeworld 2 however does have a few more units, but I still think most peolpe would rather play with good old fasioned metal ships.
The Vong frigate looks like a diseased kidney aswell, which dosnt help!

I just hate the NJO and by extension the Vong.
You think lucasarts could oversee the making of videogame with the vong when they couldn't do it with the books?

Actually, at least the NJO era has some potential good stories.
But what do we get? A bloody gangster who's too full of himself?
