Scootalo. The idea is that in humanized form, instead of having wings, pony-human-pegasi are able to control the winds, thus hand-gliding becomes an obvious method of travel for them.
Sweetie Belle. The idea here is that Rarity asked the most talented and skilled person she knows to try and give SB some lessons, hence Twilight.
Applebloom (or is it Apple Bloom?). The idea here is that in balance to pegasi and unicorns, earth ponies created technology to get equal and are taught to be keen on them (notice Pinkie Pie's immediate use of cellphone).

Not that literally. Although I guess the alternate interpretation is simply that Celestia will eventually die, and when she goes the sun will also go?
That still probably leaves Luna behind, though. Since she is the younger sister and all. At that point, all she will have is the eternal, empty night until the day she dies herself. Maybe the moon breaks up and becomes a ring around the dead planet when that happens?

RogueIce, I like your interpretation, it has the maximum depression potential.
HOWEVER, I would say that symbolism is rather important in this; so Luna would die when the moon no longer reflects light onto Equestria. I mean, the sun isn't going to totally disappear; there will still be matter there until heat death, even if it doesn't shine. Actually, you've just convinced me that there would be a long period of time when it's just the princesess - every other pony would be long dead, but they'd be there to keep each other company.

Luna went crazy again, and Celestia had to seal her away again with the Elements of Harmony; but this time for some reason Luna was never able to return. Celestia knows for a fact that her sister will never return, will never talk to her again - and blames herself for it all. When all the other ponies are dead, she feels in her heart that it was all wasted - so eternal night would have killed them all a few millennia early: so what? For helping them then she is without a sister now, without a companion to while away eternity.
And yet...
And yet the knowledge that she was willing to inflict this terrible fate on herself and her sister for the sake of those temporary, short-lived, flawed, vulnerable little ponies: that she was ultimately willing to sacrifice everything, including her sanity and sense of self; because it was the right thing to do, to shield the weak with her strength... this, and the love and affection she has experienced from a hundred thousand generations of ponies, all long-dead by now. Surely that is not a waste! All the good she has done, all the little ponies she has helped (in small ways and large): all of this she will remember, even as her mind fades away to nothingness.
But this is by far the worst alternative for Luna. For while Celestia will have her good deeds and all the love she has experienced to warm her, Luna will remember only her own wickedness; and the fear and scorn of the ponies who rejected her. Forever.

The old cartoons are a completely separate continuity (well, several separate continuities, like with Transformers). I haven't watched any MLP apart from FiM, so I don't know for sure, but I don't think Discord or Celestia or whatever have any counterparts in the previous series.

I've also come across a neat minecraft/MLP crossover.
Since my I'm too lazy to download then reupload them imageshack account is full, I'll just post the links. Note that there is an overarching story and I'm posting on what I think is the correct cronological order.
