Well I abandoned mostly because I figured I could never recover from this disaster fast enough to survive the next seige, which would be even bigger.

[mini-lack-of-update]

I hope you're all happy. Now I'm even dreaming Dwarf Fortress.

Good News- In this dream despite facing 5 goblins in phalanx, our own phalanx triumphed! We seized the fishpond sucessfully! Bad news- Kuja, Spanky, and Vortex Empire died in the battle.

This is probably an omen. Stay away from goblins, fish, and sparrows who can shoot their feathers like projectiles, you three.

:)

Will try to get in at least a small update tomorrow, although nothing exciting has really happened so far.

That naturally will doom us to about 8 deaths and some huge explosion or something in a few game weeks due to me saying that....

Now if only there was a "decent" graphics pack. The one that was linked earlier was fine but still on the sucky side. Gimme Ultima graphics! :)

Pfft. The graphics don't bother me. If you grew up playing Rogue/Nethack/Angband/Moria you'd be used to those sorts of Ascii graphics. I get high on the nostalgia alone. And the alcohol fumes.

Personally I wouldn't mind the ASCII if it wasn't so hard to distinguish between stuff. Now with the new graphics pack I know what's what.

You know, I actually had a dream about Dwarf Fortress too, it involved you having to restart the game again due to something blowing up or the like, and starting a brand new thread too.

Now personally I'm an optimist in this sort of thing, but my subconscious and I have had a long standing argument, whereby he likes to kick me in the balls, and I like to call him a prick.

UPDATE

Fuck off school, I wanna play some goddamn MIDGET BUILDING. No wait, it was something else.... what was it?

.38a, 2 versions from previous versions.

Additions:
Deities and Temples. Temples are found in human and goblin towns, but can't be built yet. Oh well. Dwarven civilizations and Elven civilizations have deities but no actual worship yet. Goblins and Humans may also have priest nobles, but I'm not sure.
Love and Relationships added on valentine's day, Toady now has Dwarves, according to their personalities, form grudges, friendships, acquantainces, etc. with dwarves. Dwarves now improve conversation skills and stats by talking to people, and thus socialite dwarves become good charismatic leaders. Dwarves can form relationships with lovers and even get married and have children. Some dwarves can immigrate with preconcieved relationships (grudge, lovers, married, etc.).
Alcohol now has a melting point, a boiling point, a freezing point

That last one doesn't sound significant, does it?

"When I added the missing temperature info for Prepared Meals, reality took over" --ToadyOne on the bug report, foods with alcohol ingredients "melt" back into liquid alcohol

Yeah....

The fortress is doomed. Updates soon.

NEXT ON ÆDIFICUM PUMILLIONUM:

We all fall down.

Alcohol melts? Oh sweet jesus, we're screwed unless Civil War Man has a plan.

No pictures were taken of the times after the great collapse, when the laws of physics started to apply to the kitchen of Civil War Man.

Truly, it was the end of an era. First the meagre stores of blueberries were exhausted. Although Kuja and Ar-Adunkahor and Civil War Man planted valiantly, they could not bring in a large enough harvest.

The first dwarf to turn to hunting vermin for sustainance was The Vortex Empire. Booze supplies remained constant, but food production was too little, and too late.

The fortress didn't starve- indeed, about half of the populace was fed enough to not die, and probably a third of the people who didn't get to regularly eat survived anyhow. Deaths were limited to about half a dozen due to the unexpected famine. However, food riots and anger over the starving of their comrades, combined with dissatisfaction at having to supplement their diets with hunting lizards off of the cavern floors contributed to the collapse of civil authority.

Thus the planting grew more sporadic as more and more time was taken off by the dwarves trying to hunt for vermin and also rioting and protesting their fate, and eventually the fortress collapsed- not by death but by disorder.

There were only 7 survivors, who left, to found a new settlement.

One not called fucking Palelabour because that name is cursed.

THE E-

NO! IT SHALL NOT END THIS WAY.

Somehow... we shall start anew.

The dream shall not die! Not while this courageous heart still beats within my chest!

This time will be better! What more can the updates do to us? They have burned us, they have starved us? Shall they do more than kill us? Twice?

We will overcome.

For our stained honour.

For our honoured dead.

For our pride!

FOR....

um....

we need a name.

This time the RNG said "SLUTPANTS", which isn't nearly as awesome.

I'll, uh, get back to you all.

Or maybe it really could be?...

Tell me, dear readers, while I prepare the updated version of Dwarf Fortress, Valentine's Day Edition, whether or not SLUTPANTS is an epic name for a fortress? If not, suggest your own ideas.

I'm in favour of slutpants as a name, and once again put forth my name for whatever is needed.

Plus if you could upload the modded files for the new version once they're done it'd be great.

Notice: The first 7 immigrants will be the last 7 who arrived to the fortress, and then it will continue down the thread, only looping back to you first ones when there's space. Fairness is fairness, otherwise some people will never go!

Of course, as usual, we'll far outstrip the number of names in the thread if this gets off the ground.

Which it probably won't, the game will probably break again. ^_^

Losing is fun!

This time I intend to do good though. And sex and relationships give way more comedity fodder

Actually, recent archaeological expeditions managed to recover one piece of archival footage, capturing the kitchen of Civil War Man as it descended into ruin.

Image
NOOOOOOOOOOO!

P.S. I am assuming that a grief-stricken Civil War Man disappeared soon after the collapse, mourning the hubris of making a civilization rely on food produced from such a blatant and vulgar twisting of the laws of physics as she languishes in the Paradox Realm that shall forever bear her name.

P.P.S. Many years in the future, the name of Civil War Man shall be held in simultaneous awe and contempt, to the point where there would be great scandal if two new Dwarven parents were to bestow that name upon their offspring. Eventually Civil War Man will enter into the mythology as a near demigod figure who is forever cursed after attempting to attain the same level of power as the mightiest of Dwarven gods.

I forseed that the problem is that we keep fucking updating to new versions without considering how this will effect our already existing worlds. This is getting old. I demand that the Duck freeze this version as-is so that we won't have more disasters like the last two that destroyed our Fortresses just as they were getting AWESOME.

:( But this new version was so... awesome?

I promise that as soon as I start unless it's like the first 15 minutes I'm going to stay on the same version without owning my game again.

Also, I'm going to play out a year before posting an update. It'll go quicker that way. I spend too much time writing updates between playing spurts.

Trust me, it'll all work this time! I have 2 failures to prove me right on what not to do!

Also I admit I could have salvaged the fortress with a number of deaths, but I figured it would be best just to start over with half the fortress rioting and the other half starving. It wouldn't have been fun, and that's the key part.

Also, we're picking an unideal location. We've been too limp-wristed- dangerous or not, there was too much material and ease of living at that mountain.

Let's go somewhere crazy like a haunted glacier or something!

*smacks Vehrec into oblivion with Senatorial Might*

I say keep adding the updates as they come out. They add an extra level of humorous unpredictability. I still giggle at the time when lava could actually go up stairways. This is just more of the same, and its part of hte Dwarf Fortress Experience (tm)

After all, its those little minor detaisl that throw an entire game for a curve that make for great amusement.

I can't say I'm found of the name Slutpants though. I can't really bellow that as I'm charging into battle. And isn't it funny how Civil War Man was the lynchpin of our society.

So, can I be King now?

I shall volunteer anyway, even if I can't! For glory! For Dwarfkind! For Slutpants!

Hey, this sounds great. I vote we keep the new name ;)
